QUICK WIN IDEA NO. 1

URBAN AGRICULTURE -- HERBAL GARDEN FOR HEALTH & IMMUNITY

Medicinal plants have always played a vital role in our daily lives. Many medicinal plants
with very simple but effective results to address major ailments are always there, but
general public are not aware of their qualities and values. With the role of Indian System of
Medicine gaining ground and organic products attracting our lives, it would be of great help
if we can develop small medicinal plant gardens in big city parks so that we can show the
citizens a model to adopt at their places, wherever they would get a chance to plant one or
two of their choice.

As part of the Quick Win Project under CITIIS as open space development has been the
central theme, we can take up pilot ones in BDA City Centre (formerly Nicco Park) as the
Waterfront Promenade project is going to be executed there along the Drainage Channel
No. 10. We have identified a patch of nearly 4,000 square feet land near the Moon Racker
i.e. just after the bridge across the Drainage Channel would be the most suitable one.

The urban herbal gardens can also be model projects for schools and other educational
institutions across the city to replicate the idea in their campuses. On the other hand, these
model urban herbal gardens can also have common fruit bearing plants/trees like lemon,
papaya, guava and many other popular species so that people and especially students can
have the ideas to create and replicate the gardens across the city to bring in an organic
revolution and also make all aware of the values and importance of common medicinal
plants, fruit bearing plants/trees and other species which are of immense importance in
our day-to-day lives and help in boosting overall immunity.

LANDSCAPING

Landscaping of the area designated for the pilot project of Urban Agriculture with a focus on
medicinal plant garden will be developed by BUKC with pathways, signages inside and way
finding signages inside the front lawn of BDA City Centre.

EXECUTION OF THE PROJECT

The execution of the project, once finalized, could be executed by the Bhubaneswar
Development Authority (BDA), which is also a major stakeholder in the CITIIS project.

To create an impressive and educative Model Medicinal Plant Garden we can take help from
the curator of Ekamra Van Ashok Mishra, a senior official from Forests and Environment
Department and also Principal Scientist of Taxonomy and Conservation Division, Regional Plant
Resource Centre (RPRC), Pratap Chandra Panda. While Ekamra Van on the Western bank of
historic lake Bindusagar is home to more than 200 species of medicinal plants spread over an
ancient architectural design with plant species meant for the treatment of male, female and
paediatric ailments and general health, the RPRC in the heart of the city has created a
depository of many plant species of various uses and types including exotic ones.

FINANCIAL PLANNING

The financial planning or budgeting for the Quick Win pilot project on Urban Agriculture –
Herbal Garden for Better Health would be done in consultation with GM (Engineering) BSCL and
BDA Chief Horticulturist and other landscape designers from BUKC.

EXECUTION TIME

Once the estimation is done and DPR prepared the execution of the Quick Win Pilot project
would take around three months to be ready for the public to see and experience a new kind of
learning experience in the city inside a theme park.

MAINTAINANCE

Maintenance of the pilot project would be taken up in consultation with BDA as it has a
dedicated horticulture wing and its experts are also looking after the BDA City Centre as part of
their project area. A modality could be reached out between BSCL and BDA for this.
