In this lesson…
Overview The students will learn about Cold War events in the 60’s through taking notes and an
activity on the Cuban Missile Crisis.
USII.8 C The student will apply social science skills to understand the
economic, social, and political transformation of the United States and the world
between the end of World War II and the present by examining the role of the
Standards of Learning United States in defending freedom during the Cold War, including the wars in
Korea and Vietnam, the Cuban missile crisis, the collapse of communism in
Europe, and the rise of new challenges;
Essential Questions No essential questions
Students will be able to know the Cold War events associated with the 1960’s and their
Objectives implications on life at the time in America.
I can identify Cold War events that happened in the 60’s and evaluate their relative
severity.
Learning Target(s)

Necessary Prior The knowledge of the Cold War, and prior Cold War events that happened in the 1940s
and 1950s
Knowledge
Materials Promethean boards, paper, and pencils
The students will review what they did last class in their online journal, as well as
Introduction/Hook answer an open ended discussion question that has to do with the topic of the day.
1. Give notes to students, as well as watching the videos that go with each slide
2. Do an activity where the students act as presidential advisors to the Kennedy (the
Instructional Activities teacher) and are given three options about how to react to the Cuban Missile Crisis,
& Strategies as well as information about those options, the options being blockade, diplomacy,
or invasion of Cuba, and the students will share their preferred option with the class
and their reasoning.

The students are doing a final project about the severity of cold war events throughout
Assessments the era, judging them based on their “temperature” and explaining why they are that
“temperature”
The lesson will be ended by a discussion about what was learned in class and more open
Closure Activity ended questions.
Notes with information already filled out will be given to those who need certain
Accommodations accommodations.

Reflection:
I think this lesson went very well; the kids were very engaged and I was able to communicate the information
pretty effectively without having to read straight off the powerpoint or sound bland. I could have moved around
more and been more loose but overall it worked out. The videos were very engaging for the class and really
helped show the point of the slide or the severeness of the event I was teaching at the time.
