Forms and Functions of Infinitives

To cooperate, to crash, to sob, to shriek, to jump, to soak, to deliver, to procrastinate,

to state—all of these are infinitives. (https://www.chompchomp.com/terms/infinitive.htm)

A present infinitive has two forms. The first one is called a to-infinitive which follows this
format: to + base = to-infinitive Example: to + react = to react

The negative infinitive is formed by putting not in front of any form of the infinitive.

Examples
I decided not to buy more BTS merchandise.
Ms. Camcho asked the class not to be late on her class.
I'd like you not to sing so loudly.
I'd rather not comment on that.
I might not turn on my camera on our virtual class.

INFINITIVE AS NOUN
To sleep is the only thing my Grade 9 students want to do after their Messenger classes.
(To sleep functions as a noun here.)

To swim in Manila Bay is still not allowed.

INFINITIVE AS ADJECTIVE
Q3 Week No.6 Competency Code: EN9VC- IIIa 1.2-2.2
Competency: Use verbals: Infinitives
An adjective describes a noun or pronoun. If you see a noun/pronoun before the to-
infinitive, it usually functions as an adjective.

Examples:
Marios Lance always brings a book to read during their long trips with his family.
to read = adjective (it comes before the noun book).

Arthea promised herself to find new hobbies.

to find = adjective (it comes after the pronoun herself).

INFINITIVE AS AN ADVERB

An adverb modifies an adjective, a verb, and an adverb.

If you see the word before the infinitive which as any of these three, then the infinitive
functions as an adverb.

Examine these sentences:

9-Aquila was surprised to know that they all passed their summative test in Math.
to know = adverb (it modifies the verb before it which is “was surprised”)

Kristin Joyce wants to see her friends so badly.

to see = adverb (it modifies the verb wants that comes after the infinitive)

The second form of infinitive is called a zero infinitive which only uses the base form of a
verb. An infinitive will lose its to when it follows these verbs: feel, hear, help, let, make,
see, and watch (including their past tenses)

Take a look at these examples:

Ma. Sophia felt the rain splatter on her clear skin.

felt is the verb while splatter is the infinitive minus to.

Red made Russel buy him a skin in Mobile Legends.

made is the verb while buy is the infinitive minus to

Carisse Faith saw her dog lick her bubble gum ice cream,
saw is the verb while lick is the infinitive minus to

I can share ideas about our lesson in AP but I won’t make you copy my answer.

Zero infinitive or bare infinitive as discussed in study.com follows an auxiliary verb (such
as 'should', 'can', ‘would’, ‘might’ etc). To illustrate this concept, you could study the
following examples:
