ENGLISH 9
Quarter 3 – Week – 6
Competency: Use verbals: Infinitives
Words that are formed from verbs but does not function as
such are called verbals. There are three types of verbals: gerunds,
infinitives and participles.
In this activity sheet, we shall learn about infinitives. We will
know how to spot them and how to write meaningful sentences using
infinitive phrases.
We will also recognize its two most common forms: present
infinitives and zero infinitives.
_________________________________________________________________________
1
A present infinitive has two forms. The first one is called a to-infinitive which follows this
format: to + base = to-infinitive Example: to + react = to react
The negative infinitive is formed by putting not in front of any form of the infinitive.
Examples
I decided not to buy more BTS merchandise.
Ms. Camcho asked the class not to be late on her class.
I'd like you not to sing so loudly.
I'd rather not comment on that.
I might not turn on my camera on our virtual class.
INFINITIVE AS NOUN
To sleep is the only thing my Grade 9 students want to do after their Messenger classes.
(To sleep functions as a noun here.)

INFINITIVE AS ADJECTIVE
Q3 Week No.6 Competency Code: EN9VC- IIIa 1.2-2.2
Competency: Use verbals: Infinitives
An adjective describes a noun or pronoun. If you see a noun/pronoun before the to-
infinitive, it usually functions as an adjective.
Examples:
Marios Lance always brings a book to read during their long trips with his family.
to read = adjective (it comes before the noun book).
INFINITIVE AS AN ADVERB
If you see the word before the infinitive which as any of these three, then the infinitive
functions as an adverb.
The second form of infinitive is called a zero infinitive which only uses the base form of a
verb. An infinitive will lose its to when it follows these verbs: feel, hear, help, let, make,
see, and watch (including their past tenses)
Carisse Faith saw her dog lick her bubble gum ice cream,
saw is the verb while lick is the infinitive minus to
