stay for all available treatments and problems, queries related on medical record number
and room number of inpatient. The receptionist should also be familiar with the timings for
buses, trains and airways . A guide map of the places of interest to see in the city can also be
kept for patients guide.

15 | P a g e

EMERGENCY/CASUALTY

The main function of an emergency department, or ED, is to treat patients who are
suffering from an acute serious illness or injury that would lead to severe complications if
not treated quickly. The ED is not designed to provide ongoing care. Patients requiring
urgent attention will always be seen first.

Treatment in the ED is based on clinical need and not your financial situation or
whether you have health insurance. Most emergency departments are very busy and treat
thousands of patients each year. Patients are treated in order of medical urgency, not
necessarily in order of arrival. Care is delivered to all patients regardless of culture, beliefs,
conscientious convictions, sexual orientation or disability and privacy will be respected at
all times.

To ensure the sickest patients are seen first, a sorting mechanism called triage (to sort)
is used to categorise patients. Triage is performed by an experienced triage nurse and
occurs very soon after arrival. The triage system is in place in all hospitals throughout
Australia. The activities of our emergency departments are reviewed regularly as a part of
the Area's commitment to providing quality care and skill, in keeping with recognised
standards, practices and ethics.

16 | P a g e
Z

Function of the Emergency Room

It is characteristic for an Emergency Room that the number of patients varies and
situations are unpredictable, thus the Emergency Room is crowded and it may take a long
time to get treatment.

If a patient is in danger of life or in imminent danger of life, he gets immediate treatment.

 First, we evaluate urgency of the need for care. We always treat the urgent and
emergent patients first based on our triage classification.

 We treat patients of several medical specialities, thus queuing times may

substantially vary.

 In addition to Emergency Room patients, our Casualty Officers treat patients in

wards, do emergency operations and procedures in other facilities as well.

 Patient information is recorded and read by using computers.

 We use an electronic patient record system, Mediatri®, which covers the patient
information of the province.

The Emergency Department of Apple Hospital is a purpose-built facility, for

people who need immediate hospital attention due to serious illness or injury.
Hospital provide a 24 hour, 7 day a week consultant-led service to the people of
Indore and surrounding communities.

BILLING DEPARTMENT

The medical billing process is not undertaken by a single individual. Medical

coding involves front office administrators, such as receptionists, as well as back office
staff, including the medical biller and coder. It is important to understand every step of
this process if you intend to pursue a career in medical billing and coding. For the
purposes of this lesson, we will cover the end-to-end process of medical billing as a
whole, and not just the responsibilities of the biller and coder.

The primary job of medical billing specialists is to:

1. Understand each individual’s responsibility for payment, as they may

differ from patient to patient

2. Evaluate and analyze insurance coverage and medical charges,

and prepare accurate billing forms

3. Collect accurate payments from insurance plans and/or individual

Patients

The very first stage of a patient's appointment should include the notation of the
patient's demographic information as well as information about his/her insurance, such
as the insurance payer and policy number. Any information that will be useful and/or
necessary in a claim situation should be detailed at patient check in.

18 | P a g e
Z

MEDICLAIM

Even regular patients need to verify their insurance information and eligibility before
every appointment. Insurance information can change at any time, which is why you need
to ask patients before every visit if their insurance information has changed. A change in
insurance information can also impact benefit and authorization information, so it is
always worth the trouble of double-checking.

Responsibility describes who owes what for a particular doctor’s visit. Once the biller
has the pertinent info from the patient, that biller can then determine which services are
covered under the patient’s insurance plan.

Insurance coverage differs dramatically between companies, individuals, and plans, so

the biller must check each patient’s coverage in order to assign the bill correctly. Certain
insurance plans do not cover certain services or prescription medications. If the patient’s
insurance does not
cover the procedure or service to be rendered, the biller must make the patient aware that
they will cover the entirety of the bill.

An OPD is a hospital department designed to be a first contact point between the patient
and the hospital staff. A Patient who goes first time to the hospital, he directly goes to OPD
and then the OPD decides to which department a patient should go.

Generally an OPD is constructed on the ground floor of any hospital and divided into
several parts like Neurology department,Orthopedics department, Gynecology department,
General medicine department etc. Here the patient completes all the formalities and then
go the respective department.

Outpatient: An Outpatient is the patient who is not hospitalized for 24 hours or more but
visits the hospital or clinic for treatment or diagnosis.

Problems In OPD

- Wild search of speciality OPDs by patients.

- Appointment jumping.
- Long waiting hours at each point of contact.
- Non-availability of reports of various investigations.
- Inadequate time given for each.

HR DEPARTMENT ( room no.

Human Resource Management

Most people think that a human resource department exists only to handle employee
issues. In reality, the function of a human resource department is more crucial than you
may think. A human resource management (HRM) department or team can contribute to a
company's overall success
in multiple ways. In the hospital industry, HRM is key when it comes to maintaining
effective services, attracting talented employees, and promoting a positive, professional
atmosphere and workplace safety.

HRM in the Hospital Industry

Human resource management is the process of hiring and developing employees so that
they're more useful to both their specific fields of work and the organization as a whole.
This process includes recruiting, training, and evaluating employees; analyzing jobs;
communicating with staff
members; and managing salaries.

DENTAL DEPARTMENT
This department is situated in one of the OPD ensuring the convenience of patients . The
department is nearby to IPD as well as OPD patients as it is situated on 1 floor.

QUALITY DEPARTMENT ( room no. 9)

Hospital quality management means the process of managing the entire
entailed hospital operation in a worthwhile fashion by applying the various hospital quality
measures and standards, so that the hospital functions in a desirable condition. The Indian
hospital system follows NABH Quality Standards, which provides guidelines to healthcare
administrators and also facilitates the overall hospital functions to remain exceptional and
patient-friendly. However, the hospital management has to control all the related activities
prudently, by applying the appropriate hospital quality measures, with special attention to
the key areas of organizational activities such as the process improvement, cost reduction,
productivity & performance improvement, and throughput time.

DEPARTMENT OF RADIOLOGY AND ADVANCED IMAGING

22 | P a g e
Z

Radiology is a medical specialty that uses imaging to diagnose and treat diseases
seen within the body. Radiologists use a variety of imaging techniques such as X-ray,
ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine including positron emission
tomography (PET), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to diagnose and/or treat
diseases.

Radiographers use a range of techniques including:

X-rays – used to look through tissue to examine bones, cavities and foreign objects. May be
used with contrast agents to provide a live motion image, eg. fluoroscopy to image the
digestive system, or angiography to investigate blood vessels
CT (computed tomography) – provides cross-sectional views (slices) of the body allowing
disease to be identified and localised
Ultrasound – uses high frequency sound. This technique is widely used in obstetrics,
gynaecology and paediatrics and for patients with abdominal, vascular or musculoskeletal
conditions
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) – provides high quality imaging of body parts
without the need for radiation. A diagnostic radiographer is a person who has been trained
to take your Xray or perform your MRI or CT scan. If trained to perform an ultrasound a
radiographer is known as a sonographer. Radiographers also support a radiologist in
performing interventional procedures.

OPERATION THEATRE

An operating theater (also known as an operating room (OR), operating suite, or

operation suite) is a facility within a hospital where surgical operations are carried out in
an aseptic environment.

 The operating table in the center of the room can be raised, lowered, and tilted in
any direction.

 The operating room lights are over the table to provide bright light, without
shadows, during surgery.

 The anesthesia machine is at the head of the operating table. This machine has tubes
that connect to the patient to assist them in breathing during surgery, and built-in
monitors that help control the mixture of gases in the breathing circuit.

 The anesthesia cart is next to the anesthesia machine. It contains the medications,
equipment, and other supplies that the anesthesiologist may need.

 Sterile instruments to be used during surgery are arranged on a stainless steel table.

 An electronic monitor (which records the heart rate and respiratory rate by
adhesive patches that are placed on the patient's chest).

 The pulse oximeter machine attaches to the patient's finger with an elastic band aid.
It measures the amount of oxygen contained in theblood.

 Automated blood pressure measuring machine that automatically inflates the blood
pressure cuff on patient's arm.

25 | P a g e
Z

The Operation Theatre

The Operation Theatre is a sterile area where operations are conducted both minor and
major.
The OT has three different zones as follows:
 The Outer Zone or the Outermost protective zone.
 The Inner Zone or the Clean zone.
 The Innermost Zone or the Aseptic Zoneor the Sterile Zone.

The OT has been divided into these zones so that:

 There is no chance of any compromise with the sterility of the surgery.
 To give to the patient an infection free recovery.
 To give to the consumer the highest quality of treatment and surgery.
 For customer satisfaction for the money being spent.
 To give to the patient the highest standardised quality of healthcare.

Outermost Protective Zone.

Positive air pressure is maintained in this zone. Here the patient and the staff remove their
footwear and change to the OT dress. There is a mini-cafeteria for refreshments. There are
lounges and lockers for the surgeons, doctors and staff. There is a conference room for the
staff and doctors. This zone has a staff change area, control-room, toilets, store-room and
there is an area used for the reception and transfer of the patients.

Inner Clean Zone.

Higher level of positive air pressure is maintained than the outermost zone. There is a
storage and post-operative patient recovery room. There is the pre-operative patient
waiting area also. In this zone there is a plaster room, room for blood storage, mobile X-ray,

26 | P a g e
Z

dark room, staff room, anaesthetic and OT sister room and work room to receive OT
unsterile theatre instruments.

Innermost Aseptis Sterile Zone.

Very high positive air pressure is maintained in this zone. Staff and doctors scrub here and
wear gowns. The taps are three feet apart. There is an anaesthetic induction room and
supply room for sterile instruments. The OT set up is here. The HEPA filters maintain
sterility 20 air changes take
place per hour. Thus a very high sterile condition is maintained here.

27 | P a g e
Z

CATH LAB

A catheterization laboratory or cath. lab is an examination room in a

hospital or clinic with diagnostic imaging equipment used to visualize the
arteries of the heart and the chambers of the heart and treat any stenosis or
abnormality found.

Most catheterization laboratories are "single plane" facilities, those that

have a single X-ray generator source and an x-ray image intensifier for
fluoroscopic imaging. Older cath. labs used cine film to record the
information obtained, but since 2000, most new facilities are digital. The latest
digital cath. labs are biplane (have two X-ray sources) and use flat panel
detectors.

Staff

Cardiac catheterisation laboratories (or Cath Lab) are usually staffed by a

multidisciplinary team. This may include a medical practitioner (normally
either a consultant cardiologist or radiologist), cardiac physiologist,
radiographer and nurse.

Medical practitioner
The consultant cardiologist is responsible for gaining arterial access,
inserting a sheath into either the radial or femoral artery, passing a wire and
catheter into the coronary artery and selectively injecting contrast media into
the coronary arteries. They then interpret the images taken to ascertain
where the narrowed or blocked artery has the problem. They use a variety of
techniques and imaging tools to work the size of things such as balloons and
stents.

28 | P a g e
Z

Cardiac physiologist
Cardiac physiologists usually set up what is known as a transducer to
monitor pressure in the arteries. They also have a live view of the patients
ECG so they can tell whether or not there is a problem being caused by the
insertion of the catheter into the heart to the electrical pathways.
The physiologist will also set up a temporary pacemaker if the procedure is
an angioplasty or a PCI. Finally, they also set up defibrillators on to the patient
for emergency use if needed. In some locations, some of these responsibilities
may be carried out by other personnel, such as trained nurses or
technologists.

Cardiac catheterization
Cardiac catheterization is a general term for a group of procedures that are
performed in the cath. lab, such as coronary angiography. Once a catheter is in
place, it can be used to perform a number of procedures including angioplasty,
PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) angiography, transcatheter aortic
valve replacement, balloon septostomy, and an electrophysiology study or
catheter ablation. Devices such as pacemakers may be fitted, or rotablation to
remove plaque can be performed.

PRIVATE ROOMS
The term suggests, probably the greatest reason why people would
ask for a private room is to maintain their privacy. Despite the fact that
hospital wards are designed as best as they can be so that you maintain some
privacy and dignity by being partitioned off with curtain rails for when you’re
being attended to, for the most part, you don’t get an awful lot of privacy from
the other people in the beds surrounding you.

In a private room, the facilities can vary but you can expect to have
your own TV and, perhaps, phone facilities and you may also get your own en
suite facilities with your own bathroom and toilet.
