Safety-

When materials are processed there will be situations that

create hazards.
Anybody who could be harmed by these hazards should
always consider safety
Safety considerations could involve the wearing of epe but
could also involve many other measures just like the safety of
others.

Were evolved.

Today we have things/objects all around us that make our

lives very different to what they were a long time ago.
Humans ability to think and reason has enabled them to
evolve and change the way we live. All sorts of needs and
factors have lead to humans making and developing things
that have allowed them/us to improve our lives.
Neanderthals/cave men made tools and weapons. In the late
1800’s the automobile was invented.
Diversity- many people, many countries, cultures, climates, many
different needs. (heaps of products on the market) all these
products meet needs, and are or should be developed with
carefull Consideration.
A DESIGN PROCESS

Issue identification.

Context. Cell/smart phones are a

big part of modern living. At
times its handy to hold your
phone, for example; “When I am
lost or need help, my phone
needs to positioned so I can call a family
member or someone who can help me. Or if your
driving and need to use google maps, your phone
has it and can help with that specific job.

What are some considerations we may need to

think about in relation to this situation that
may effect what we might design/make?

How heavy the phone is. This will determine how

strong the outcome needs to be.

The surface the outcome is sitting on. This is

because the outcome may be sitting on different
surfaces. For example in the car on the
dashboard which may be curved, different cars
have different shaped dashboards. The surface
could be soft like a pillow

Other considerations are;

 The size of the phone. Different phone

models make different sizes.
 Where the ports and the switches are on
each different make/model. The model and
make of the phone. This is because of the
positions of the switches on the side,
socket for charging etc may differ.

Metals

Metals, characterised by high electrical and thermal

conductivity
They’re also malleable, ductile, and reflective of light.

Metals can be manipulated to have the following
properties. Find definitions for these properties

Malleable- A Malleable shape can be used to hammer or
be pressed into shape without breaking or cracking

Ductile- Able to be drawn out using thin wires (The ability

of a material to have it is own shape)

Tough – Tough is a strong material which doesn’t bend and
is strong

Elastic- Elastic is a type of material that is able to resume its
normal shape spontaneously after being stretched or
compressed

Brittle- Hard but liable to break easily

Hard- A material that is strong and tough

Work hardened- This is when a metal increases in hardness
of a metal included, deliberately or accidently, by
hammering, rolling, drawing or other physical processes
Clients, End users and target markets

At school, students may design and make things for

themselves. In the real world, people who design things,
design with other people in mind. This will be because they
will be employed by companies who want to sell the thing
being designed. In some cases designers will design “One
offs” for clients. This is knows as bespoke design.

A client is the person that the thing is being designed for.

They will be the person or company that the thing is being
designed for. They will be the one who helps make decisions
on how it should be, and they will be paying for it,

The end users are the people who will be using the product

The target market is the group of people who the product will
be marketed to.
The thing will be designed with this group in mind

For our phone holder we are the clients. However we could be

designing it for a sibling, the end user would be me. But the
target market could be anyone, with the need to hold their
phone in the way I am wanting it to be held/supported.

Metals
Metals are common as a material for making many
products.
Metals exist as elements in the earth’s crust. They are
mined in the form of an ore.
Metal ores are processed depending on the metal.
Some metals exist in the earth as pure metals, such as
Gold and Silver. But aluminium for example needs to be
extracted from “Bauxite” which is raw material mined to
produce aluminium
Examples of pure metals are: Copper, aluminium, gold,
silverm zing, magnesium, tin, lead and iron. There are
others.
Metals that are not pure are ‘mixtures’. These are known
as Alloys. Examples of alloys are steel, brass, bronze and
stainless steel. There are others.
Some of these alloys are derived from iron. Tne symbol
for iron is FE. These are known as Ferrous metel. Tnese
are usually magnetic.
The large circular amusement rides that have small
carriages hanging from them are called Ferris wheels.
Named after the person who invented them. Coincidently,
they are made from steel which is ferrous metal.

Metals have properties that make them incredibly useful

for making many products.
They can be soft, hard, able to be stretched, elastic,
strong for example, metals can be made to be tough.
These properties can be changed through “heat treating”.

One interesting property of particular metals is their

ability to resonate sound. This is what makes brass
instruments so effective.

The properties of metals can be altered by ‘heat

treatment’. Metals are heated and cooled in specific ways
to make them, hard or tough.

An example of a toughened steal product is: A shovel
