LECTIO DIVINA #01

June 4, 2022

NAME: Mary Joy Ann C. Maravilla

Section: 3 CMC

Reading: The Coming of the Spirit. (Act. 2:1-13)

1* When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together.
2And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, * and it filled the entire house in which they were.
3Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, * which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
4And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, * as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem.
6At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
7They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?
8Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language?
9We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome,
11both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.”
12They were all astounded and bewildered, and said to one another, “What does this mean?”
13But others said, scoffing, “They have had too much new wine.”
Questions for Lectio Divina:

1. Lectio: How is the Holy Spirit described in the Pentecost story? What did the Disciple hear, feel and see?

The Holy Spirit is described like it’s a sound of a mighty wind. Maybe we can use a hurricane’s sound to compare the strong
driving wind mentioned in the verse. Apparently, a strong wind is most likely associated to the Judgment of the Lord based on the
scriptures. However, the sound of the wind does not bring any judgment but rather the power of the Almighty Father to give
assistance to the church. The disciple heard the strong driving wind and they felt incredibly amazed because they were able to hear,
speak and understand tongues in different native languages.

2. Meditatio: Imagine you were there Mary with the Apostles. What would you think when you heard them speaking about Jesus of all
different language?

As the mother of Jesus, I would think that they are very devoted to His grace and that they were really willing to share His word
to each and everyone regardless of their languages.

3. Oratio: In Prayer, why do you ask the Holy Spirit of His gifts? How would you use these gifts?
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit Why do ask for it? How would you use these gifts?
1. Wisdom We ask the gift of wisdom because we see God in any aspects of our lives. I see this gift provides me a
deeper meaning and connection of the events I faced, and I will be facing in the future together with Jesus.
2. Knowledge With the gift of knowledge, we can know and understand the meaning and purpose of God in one’s life. I
think this is more than just accumulating and collecting facts.
3. Understanding As a person, we ask the gift of understanding for us comprehend how to be a follower of God. For me, this
gift is something very mighty because with it, I will not be confused by all the unnecessary messages in the
culture that I lived in. I will be able to understand what’s right and what’s wrong. NO CONFUSION.
4. Fear of the Lord Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge as it aligns our perspective with Heavenly father: we are
limited, interdependent beings, and He is the limitless, all-powerful Almighty. With the gift of fear of the Lord, I
see this as a way for me to know and be aware of the Glory and Honor and majesty of the Lord.
5. Piety We ask the gift of piety to recognize our reliance with God the Father. I see this gift as one way to have a
deep sense of respect with Jesus.
6. Fortitude We ask for the gift of fortitude to overcome the fears we have in life. I see this as a pass that as a follower of
Jesus I am willing to take the risk and stand up what is right according to the Holy living made by God.
7. Counsel We ask for this to know what is right and what is wrong, and we must always choose to do what is morally
accepted by the people and the church. I see this as a way for me to avoid any immoral sins and be more
aware of my actions as a person.

4. Contemplation: Think of the best way on how would you like to share about Jesus to other?

The best way that I can share Jesus to others is sharing my story and how had Jesus helped me get back on my feet. Truly
Jesus made me a new person. His grace works miraculously in His own time. With that, I want to share to everyone that no matter
how hard the situation is, Jesus is there protecting us. So, we must not give up the life that He has planned and given us.

5. Action: Which gift of the Holy Spirit do you think you could use more of this week?

The gift of the Holy Spirit that I used more this week is the gift of knowledge and understanding. Why? Because I am still
learning and every day of my life, I believe there is something new to learn and God is there giving me the enough strength and
energy to absorb and understand comprehensively every learnings I acquire from my professors and classmate. Frankly speaking,
sometimes I am very lazy to acquire new opportunities and learn new knowledge but then – I realized that I am lucky enough to
experience all of this in the comfort of my home and with all the new technologies around me. I wish I can extend my knowledge and
understanding to the poor and needy.

Task: Make a campaign material promoting Jesus or the gift of the holy Spirit and post it in your FB tagging at least 10 of your close friends
plus me. (Therese Zyrrah Daluping)co
