IN THE LIMELIGHT: THE

DISCRIMINATION AGAINST
LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY YOUTH
RESEARCH RATIONALE
■ In this study, we propose to determine of how LGBT
youths are affected by discrimination. LGBT is an
abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender
people. As day goes by, we find some problems that we
need to work on.
■ Most people are blissfully unaware of how the common
discrimination against the LGBTQ community negatively
impacts different aspects of their lives.
■ Furthermore, this study is a must to be conducted merely
because the researchers want to know something good
about this community, as this study aims to serve as their
voice and for their community to stand out.
■ The researchers want to give them the freedom
to express their ideas and feelings without being
discriminated against their gender.
■ Since then, we’ve seen that this community is
growing in size. We want something that we can
help with.
■ Therefore, with the said issues and goals of our
study, we have come to our decision to expand
our interest in this topic.
THESIS STATEMENT
■ LGBT students faces too much discrimination in
school. The lack of clarity about legal
responsibilities that schools must provide when
issues arise, and the lack of intimacy on the role
of school organizations. Teachers and
administrators should be lecturing those who
discriminate, educating the community, and
assisting in changing every school's culture to be
more accepting of its students.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1. How does discrimination affect the mental
health of LGBT students?
2. What are the significant changes to their
everyday lives to avoid discrimination?
3. What are the importance of expanding
and enforcing protections for LGBT youth
in schools?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
■ Students. In this study, this can help a student
think more deeply and is a valuable stepping
stone to new understandings of sexuality and
gender for a safer and better environment.
■ Parents. This study will be beneficial for them to
understand and will give them a chance to accept
their child who is part of this community. This will
also help them to expand their knowledge of this
community to avoid disruption in parent-child
attachment and help their children to have peace
of mind.
■ Teachers. This study will assist teachers in their
roles as student mentors, providing advice and
encouragement. This will also help them with how
they are going to make a space for the students
and be whoever and however they want to
become, which is really a necessary step.
■ Schools. This study can help the school experience
similar levels of support for this community, and as
a result, the school will be a safer place for them to
stay. This will also prevent the students who are
part of this community from experiencing struggles
with mental health. This will encourage excellence,
achieve equity, and improve learning outcomes for
children, youth, and adults.
■ Through this study, we may persuade an
individual to expand their thoughts about
this community. The implications of this
study would be a great contribution to our
surroundings. As a youth, we can't change
a person's mind but, we can share
knowledge to influence what's good. The
results of this study could be extremely
beneficial to both individuals and society as
a whole.
RESEARCH DESIGN
■ The design of qualitative research
methodology will be used for this study. This
study attempts to describe a
phenomenological research design used to
gain understanding and explore what
LGBTQ youth experience based on each
participant's answers to the researchers'
questions and objectives, as well as to
evaluate the study's results.
POPULATION AND SAMPLING
■ This study will be conducted at ACLC College
of Tacloban. In gathering the data needed in
this study, the total population includes all
Senior High School Students enrolled at
ACLC.
■ The population of interest of this study
would be all Senior High School
Students.Moreover, the Slovin’s Formula will
be used by the researchers in determining
the sample size:
n = Sample size
N = Population Size
e = Margin of Error
n= N / (1 + Ne2).
■ After having the sample size, the researcher
will apply the Snowball Sampling in the study
in which the researchers will be required to
generate a pool of participants for a research
study through referrals made by individuals
who share a particular characteristic of
research interest with the target population.
DATA-GATHERING PROCEDURE
■ The researchers will multiply the questionnaires to
number of copies sufficient to accommodate all the
respondents and will screen participants who may
be involved in the data gathering procedure.
■ The researchers will obtain informed consent from
the LGBTQIA Community youth participants.
■ While the researchers will be giving the copies of
the instrument the researcher will provide
instructions to help the respondents accomplish the
questionnaires.
■ The questionnaires will be retrieved on the
same day when they will be answered.
■ The results of the retrieved copies of the
questionnaires will be tallied and tabulated.
Then, the data will be analyzed and
interpreted through the use of the most
appropriate statistical procedures.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
■ The qualitative study, “In the Limelight: The Discrimination
against LGBTQIA+ Community Youth”, will interview with
question guides through a Google meeting. The
researchers will create ten (10) sets of questions to which
the participants need to respond and share their
experiences. Basic information such as age, gender, and
section are also included. Questions such as "Do you feel
safe in school? Supported by the adults in your life?" and
“Has this been a secret you have had to keep from others or
have you told other people?” are possible questions asked
during the interview. Questions such as "Do you feel safe in
school? Supported by the adults in your life?” and “Has this
been a secret you have had to keep from others or have
you told other people?” will be conducted through an
open-ended questionnaire.
