Learning Objective

Describe the components of a scientific investigation. (S7MT-Ia-1)

Specific Objectives
1. Identify the different steps of scientific method.
2. Classify the dependent variables and independent variables in a given scientific
investigation.
3. Determine the sequence in problem solving using the scientific method;
4. Analyze a problem scenario and interpret the given data based on the context of
Scientific Method; and
5. Apply the steps of the scientific method in suggesting ways to stop the spread of
Corona virus.

Time Allotment: 4 hours

Key Concepts

In our day to day life, we have probably encountered problems such as losing a pair
of favorite slippers. Henceforth, how do you find a lost object? Moreover, what do you do
if you can’t find one? Commonly, you predict where it is according to your own experience.
A statement that is based on someone’s own experience is called an inference. Probably
you hear your dog, playing in the backyard. Can it be that your missing slipper is in the
backyard? Thus, scientific investigation starts by asking questions and creating an
inference. And these are important part of the scientific process.
Science is a process of investigating things and phenomenon around us. It is a
process of acquiring answers to certain questions using a specified scientific method.
In investigating how things worked out and the reason why they do so, scientific
methods is the solution that serves as guide to the scientist in answering. It is similar to
a road map that we follow in order for us to get into the destination.
When starting a scientific investigation, you have to start by making observations.
Once you have done with your observations, you can then formulate or ask questions.
Look around, and start to get curious! Did your mind wonder, about the things around
you? Have you ever thought why water in the ocean is salty? What makes the leaves look
green? There are endless possible questions and observations we can draw about in the
world around us.
Now, based on your observations, a possible answer from your formulated question
shall be given and it is called a hypothesis. It is also known as an educated guess. It is a

preliminary answer to a question from your observation. It is not necessarily true or
correct, that is why hypothesis should be tested. The next step in a science investigation
is to test the formulated hypothesis, wherein you are going to conduct an experiment,
record and analyze the result and to finally make a conclusion.
The major goal of these methods is to summarize your findings from the experiment
conducted and then validate and identify whether your hypothesis should be accepted or
rejected.

Example:
Emelyn planted tomatoes in small pots, and she wondered how sunlight influences the
growth of her tomato plant. She assumed that if plants would not get sunlight, then plants cannot
grow healthy. Then, she did an experiment. Emelyn made two different set-ups. She placed her
plant labeled A inside the box with absence of light while plant B is placed outside the house with
sufficient amount of sunlight. Then, she pours the same amount of water every day. She observed
and recorded the data within a week. After the days of trials, she noticed that the plant inside the
box withers and is shorter while the plant placed outside grows healthy and taller. Here is the data
she collected:

How did Emelyn present her collected data? ____________________________________

In recording and analyzing the result, the data or documents are recorded through
pictorials and data were analyzed using different representation such as charts, tables,
graphs, averages or percentages.

What is Emelyn’s hypothesis? _________________________________________________

Hypothesis is an assumption made from the observed evidences. It is the initial part of any
scientific investigation that converts research questions into a prediction.

What should Emelyn’s conclusion be? _________________________________________

Conclusions is where the summary of the results are presented. Here is where the answer to the
chosen question/problem and hypothesis shall be presented. Your conclusions should answer
the ff. questions: Does your data support your hypothesis? Why or why not?

Activity 3: Let’s Solve in Scientific Way

Objective. Determine the sequence in problem solving using the scientific method
What you need:
Pen and paper
What to do:
Read the situation below and apply the steps of scientific method in solving
the given problem. Sequence the process by writing numbers 1 for 1st step up to
6 for the 6th inside the box.

1. Ella wanted to know if water freezes faster on its own or when

added sugar.

2. Ella observed that the sugar she added was completely dissolved
in the water. And noticed that the water with sugar starts to
solidify on the first 15-minute interval. She recorded it based on
the indicated interval.
3. She filled the two identical containers with same amount of
room temperature water. Then, added a measured amount of
sugar to one container, placed both containers into the freezer.
At 15-minute interval, she opened and observed the status of
water inside the container until both are completely frozen.
4. She thought that there will be no difference in the time for the
water water to freeze whether added with sugar or not.

5. Based on the data, Ella came up that the water with sugar
freezes faster than the one with no sugar added.

6. Ella found out on her science book that when you add sugar to
water, the water (the solvent) becomes a solution. Adding sugar
disrupts the liquid state because sugar molecules move around
without direction, making the liquid water molecules less
organized. The more solute particles there are in the water, the
greater the freezing point.

What to do:
Read carefully and understand the given situation below. Identify the problem,
Suggest hypothesis and give appropriate conclusion to solve the problem. Encircle
the letter only.

During the quarantine period, Mica decided to plant mongo seeds in plastic
cups. She wanted to know if the plants can grow in different soil types. She made
three set ups. Mongo 1 is planted in a garden soil (humus), while Mongo 2 is
planted in sandy soil and lastly Mongo 3 is planted in muddy soil. The three set-
ups were placed outside to receive the same amount of sunlight and she watered
it every day. After a week of observation, she had noticed that her mongo plants
in humus soil grow faster & healthier while the mongo plants in sandy soil is thin
and has yellowish leaves and the mongo plants in the muddy soil withered.

1. What would be Mica’s problem?

A. the thin & yellowish leaves of her mongo C. the withered mongo plant
B. the quarantine period D. she wanted to know if mongo
seeds can grow in different soil.
2. What would be Mica’s best hypothesis?
A. Mongo plants can grow healthy even if planted in different soil types.
B. Lack of oxygen gives the mongo leaves its yellowish leaf color.
C. If the mongo is planted in a muddy soil, then it will grow faster.
D. Mongo plants cannot grow in a dry and muddy soil.
3. What is/are the independent variables did Mica have on her experiment?
A. soil, water and sunlight C. mongo seeds & soil
B. soil texture only D. none of these

Nowadays, people in the community are very alert in protecting oneself against corona
virus. They believe that health protocols should be strictly followed in order to protect lives.
There are safety measures recommended by the Department of Health in order not to
be contacted with the virus. These are the following:
1.Wear face mask and face shield.
2. Sanitize your hands.
3. Practice one-meter physical distancing and limit physical interaction.
4. Ensure good indoor ventilation and air flow.
But despite the massive campaign of the department and the local government units,
positive cases are increasing in the community.
As a youth, how can you help this problem in your own community? What are the
best steps that you will do to resolve this unstoppable spread of this corona virus?
