DIVERSITY OF MATERIALS IN THE ENVIRONMENT – SOLUTIONS

Name: ___________________________________________ Section: ____________________

Learning Objective

Express concentrations of solutions quantitatively by preparing different concentrations of

mixtures according to uses and availability of materials. (S7MT-Id-3)

Sub-Tasks:

1. Determine the total mass of a solution given different sample household solutes and
solvent.
2. Infer the uses of some common household mixtures in different concentrations.
3. Compute the concentrations of solutions using percent by volume and percent by mass.
4. Compare a dilute solution from a concentrated solution.
5. Cite some practical applications of your knowledge on concentration of solutions in real
life situations.

Time Allotment: 4 hours

Key Concepts

 Concentration of solution refers to the measure of the amount of solute that has been
dissolved in a solvent or solution.

 Quantitative measurement of concentration is used to tell us the amount (expressed

in numbers) of solute present in a solution.

 Dilute solution has a low concentration of the solute compared to the solvent.

 Concentrated solution is one in which there is a large amount of solute present in a

solution.

 Percent by volume is the amount of solute in each volume of solution expressed as

milliliters solute per 100 milliliters of solution (ml/100 mL).
𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒 (𝑚𝑙)
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 = 𝑥 100%
𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 (𝑚𝐿)

 Percent by mass is the amount of solute in each mass of solvent expressed as gram
solute per 100 grams of solution.
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒 (𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑠)
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 𝑥 100%
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 (𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑠)

Activity 1: It’s Mixing Time

Objectives:

 Determine the total mass of a solution given different sample household solutes
and solvent.
 Infer the uses of some common household mixtures in different concentrations.

What you need:

ballpen or pencil & paper

What to do:

1. Complete the table using the given situation below.

A sample of 6.0g of coffee powder, 8.0g of table salt,10.0g of sugar and 12.0 g of
Monosodium glutamate (Vetsin) is mixed separately in a 100.0 g of water.
Determine the total mass of each solution using the given sample in the table
and write their common uses in the last column of the table.

Activity 2: It’s Concentration Time

Objectives:

 Compute the concentrations of solutions using percent by volume and percent

by mass.
 Compare a dilute solution from a concentrated solution.

What you need:

ballpen or pencil & paper

What to do:

Part A

1. Copy the relevant data in Table 1. to Table 2.

2. Solve for the concentration of these solutions using percent by mass. The first
row is given as your guide.

Equation:
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒 (𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑠)
𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 𝑥 100%
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 (𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑠)
Example:

6.0 𝑔 𝑜𝑓 𝐶𝑜𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑑𝑒𝑟

𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 = 𝑥 100% = 5.7%
106.0 𝑔 𝑜𝑓 𝐶𝑜𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑒 𝑑𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑘

𝑥 100% = 40%
70𝑚𝑙
2. 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 = 𝑥 100% = 70%

40𝑚𝑙
2. 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑏𝑦 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 = 𝑥 100% = 80%
50𝑚𝑙
Guide Questions
1. Both Yes
2. Problem A: The solution with 40% concentration is a relatively dilute solution and the
solution with 70% concentration is a relatively concentrated solution.
Problem B: The solution with 16% concentration can be considered as a dilute solution
and the solution with 80% concentration can be considered as a concentrated solution.
3. The dilute solution contains less solute, and the concentrated solution contains more
solute. Likewise, the larger the percentage, the higher is the concentration of the
solution. The smaller the percentage, the lower is the concentration of the solution.
Guide Questions:
1. The larger the percentage, the higher the concentration of the solution. The smaller the
percentage, the lower the concentration of the solution.
2. MSG solution. It has the highest percentage among the solutions.
3. Coffee drink. It has the lowest percentage among the solutions.
