Unit 14: Installing and Maintaining Computer Hardware

Due: 21/03/22

Submitted by: Timothy Trieu Lecturer: Don Jenkins

Introduction

In this assignment we are working with a client that needs advice on 2 computer systems they
are currently running.

The benefits and implication of installing an SSD over an HDD

 Benefits
1. One benefit is that SSD are much faster than HDD
2. SSD have more longevity than HDD
3. They use less power than HDD
4. Faster boot up speed for your computer at home
5. More durability and has a higher reliability than a HDD
6. More practical sizes and has better form factors
 Implications
1. A lot more expensive than HDD
2. Data extraction can be difficult due to the different system structure
3. Storage space is limited
4. Lifespan is worse than HDD
5. Availability is more abundant than HDD
6. No compatibility with lower end devices.

The benefits and implications of North Wiltshire Environmental installing

and maintaining hardware themselves

 Benefits

1
Computer hardware maintenance is a critical component of your IT
infrastructure. Routine IT hardware maintenance is necessary to keep your
information technology system healthy and operating at peak performance.
It also speeds up computers and maximizes your software efficiency. It
can also prevent against viruses and malware. It can then measure the
environmental health around Wiltshire and can work on it. You will most
likely need experts to help you maintain and install the software.

 Implications

It can be cost effective as if you maintain and install the hardware wrong
it can lead to many problems as you won’t know what is wrong,
therefore It won’t be productive whatsoever. It will take a lot of time to
install by yourself as well, some devices might not be compatible with
what you build.

Review of how installing and maintaining hardware for one technology system could
impact an individual or an organization

For the different systems it can impact an individual as if you install a

wrong piece of hardware, it can be expensive to fix or replace but whereas

2
if you were work with an organization, your coworkers will have experience
on maintaining hardware and it won’t be as cost effective for yourself. Also
working for a company can improve your lack of knowledge on how to
install and manage on maintaining hardware.

The strengths and weaknesses of system 1

Dell OptiPlex 3020

 Strengths: Available with up to intel core I5 processors and it enables increased power
and productivity.
 Weaknesses: The limit isn’t that good so therefore your pc won’t be very high end as it
only runs with integrated graphics.

Intel Core i5-4590

 Strengths: Not that expensive so therefore affordable for workstations.

 Weaknesses: It’s outdated by far so it run most high end games nowadays.

4gb drr3 ram

 Strengths: affordable for little tasks.

 Weaknesses: slow ram so it doesn’t handle much at all.

500gb 5400rpm

 Strengths: Good amount of storage size for what it is shown.

3
 Weaknesses: Speeds for the storage size is slow so that would be a weakness.

DVD burner drive

 Strengths: Potential for higher margins

 Weaknesses: it’ll take years for movies and software to become widely available

Sceptre E205W-1600 20" LED Monitor 1600x900

 Strengths: A decent size for gaming and is a good entertainment panel

 Weaknesses: Its only 60hz so its not smooth when you play etc

LOGITECH MK120 Keyboard & Mouse Set

 Strengths: Cheap and works well for a good and cheap price.

 Weaknesses: Tactile keys so the feel of the keyboard might be uncomfortable.

The strengths and weaknesses of system 2

Dell Optiplex 780

 Strengths: Affordable computer with simple CPU and Ram sizes to handle tasks.
 Weaknesses: CPU is pretty old so it can’t handle much tasks.

Intel core 2 duo E7500

 Strengths: Runs 2.93Ghz and 1066Mhz which are good speeds for a CPU.
 Weaknesses: For the price is it you can get a much better CPU.

2gb ddr2 ram

 Strengths: Cheap and can be used for low end computers for simple tasks.
 Weaknesses: Only runs 2gb of ddr2 which is bad for most things.

250gb Seagate barracuda 7200rpm

 Strengths: Speeds are good as its pretty affordable.

 Weaknesses: they could’ve added more storage space than it would.

4
CD/DVD rom drive

 Strengths: Good for permanently storing data files within.

 Weaknesses: It will take years for movies and software to become widely available.

17” TFT LCD monitor 1280x1024

 Strengths: Decent size with built in dual speakers

 Weaknesses: Not default resolution, 60hz and is a small size

LOGITECH MK120 Keyboard & Mouse Set

 Strengths: Cheap and works well

 Weaknesses: Tactile keys as its membrane.
