Skills give you

Congratulations, freedom
BIA– graduates!

While planning the first interactive holiday programme ‘post-covid’, Born in Africa decided
to focus on skills. The Born in Africa team proudly looks back on a week full of fun and
interesting workshops to finish off term one.

There have not been a lot of interactive activities hosted recently and
there has been a boredom factor which our children know all too well. It
was clear that our children were very eager to participate in doing
something. Spending a fun filled day with your Born in Africa peers
sounds like a great idea to combat the mundane week! Learners from
Gr 2-12 were all treated to practical activities which also taught them a

copious amounts of fun and challenging games were also played.
Everyone received presents and some yummy treats!

Our mission is to develop well rounded, independent and successful young adults acting as role
models in their communities by providing educational and social support to school going children
and young adults from disadvantaged areas in Bitou, Plettenberg Bay, South Africa.
Swimming gets you to the top!

Huge congratulations is in order to Ellen Kleinsmidt who recently returned from Egypt after attending
the Africa Life Saving championships. Ellen brought home a gold medal which she achieved in the
extremely tough Flags division. Ellen was selected to represent South Africa as part of the National
Protea team. We would like to thank each person responsible for assisting Ellen in her participation! She
is a formidable young sportswoman with an extremely bright future ahead of her!

Holiday time is for monkey business!

It feels so good to finally be able to take our
children out on an educational outing again!
Together with Veronique Claes, our Educational
Coordinator, mentors and volunteers, a total of 227
Born in Africa children visited Monkeyland during the
March school holidays. This was an incredible
experience as the children got to see the primates up
close and personal in this massive park which is the
worlds’ first free roaming multi-species primate
sanctuary. Together with their Born in Africa class
mates, children from The Crags, Kranshoek,
Kwanokuthula, New Horizons, Green Valley and
Harkerville between Grades 1– 10 had a wonderful
time and at the same time learnt so much!
Volunteers in full swing again!
They are back and here to stay! Children are thoroughly enjoying all the afternoon activities which these amaz-
ing people bring to South Africa. Meet the latest bunch of volunteers at Born in Africa.

Even in the tough times, we make mentoring a fun experience for everyone!

Our experience post Covid is that we are left with an enormous aftermath from the pandemic. We are now working with many
children who in many circumstances have to dig very deep in terms of confidence building, independence and socialising. Our
children have basically been left isolated for a period of two years. Only recently have our schools opened up completely for
normal classes, sports and culture and we can really see how our children are struggling to get used to going to school for a
full week and fitting in all the extramural activities. Unfortunately substance abuse has escalated even more in the communities
we work within resulting in younger children experimenting with illegal substances. This year we commenced the year with a
refresher course on the dangers of drug abuse, life long effects and various methods to avoid becoming a victim of drug
abuse. This theme was very well received by our children who in turn were also able to spread this information to their families
and friends in their communities. SAY NO TO DRUGS!

Happy birthday to you!

Honoring Born in Africa
Born in Africa’s Belgian sponsors were invited to a delicious wine tasing in Ardooie. Godparents Marnick Blomme
and Chantal Cloete joined forces with BIA Meetjesland to organise this event under the name of BIA East -West.
The wine tasting in Ardooie turned out to be a great success thanks to all the amazing sponsors who came to
taste and buy wine, but also thanks to the incredible team behind it all! The wine tasting was supported by wine
traders Roger, Luc and Rita De Smedt who donated €2.50 per bottle sold to Born in Africa. Thank you! BIA
Meetjesland have organised fundraising events for Born in Africa since 2015 and godparents Chantal and
Marnick have also been active in raising funds for many BIA projects in the past. On the occasion of Born in
Africa’s 20th birthday in 2023 they will operate together as BIA East– West. In 2023 they will come to reveal their
total donation in celebration of 20 years Born in Africa!
Last, but not least, a new Born in Africa VIP, Delfine
Persoon, was present at the wine tasting. This powerful
woman is a professional boxer and has held many titles to
her name. We welcome her to the Born in Africa family and
thank her for her support as VIP and godparent to Born in
Africa!

Born in Africa turns 20 in 2023! This special occasion asks for some special events and surprises! We will lift the veil
of what you can expect next year so be sure to stay tuned...

First of all, we have the exciting news of publishing a book on Born in Africa in 2023!
With the professional help of Stefaan Kempynck, writer of life stories, this book will be
available for all to read in January 2023. For now, we are focusing on the Dutch version,
but an English version might be in the pipeline soon after!
Furthermore, a celebration week will be organised in Plettenberg Bay from 20 to 24
February 2023. Everyone who is interested is more than welcome to visit Born in Africa
that week and see where we work, meet the children, staff and everyone else involved
with the organisation. Lots of fun activities with the children will be planned, with a festive
march to finish off the week!
Lastly, a birthday party is planned for August 2023 in Belgium! With Isabelle and other
Born in Africa guests present, it’s bound to be a great celebration!
