Benefits and Types of Motorcycle Frames

Definition of Motorcycle frame or Motorcycle chassis: it can be compared to a

skeleton that holds the human body. The motorcycle frame holds together all the
parts of the motorcycle in a rigid structure. The frame holds everything together -
from the engine, suspension, wheels, fuel tank, handlebars, seat, airbox etc.
The motorcycle Frame = Human Skeleton

This is the list of frames used for motorcycles and their benefits
1. Backbone Frame
This is not the best frame that exists. It consists only of the backbone, which is
connected to the steering wheel. The built of this frame is simple and does not really
cost much.

2. Diamond Frame
This frame is one of the common frame. This is usually seen for Indian motorcycles.
It took its name from its shape. It has a simple built and does not cost much. A bonus
feature is that it is lightweight.

3. Cradle Frame
The structure of this frame is almost the same as the diamond frame. However, it is
built together with the toptube or backbone, and down tubes. These run down
towards the engine.

4. Trellis Frame
It is put together by welding pipes into a cage arrangement. There is no cradle
elements, downtube or even backbone in this frame. It is lightweight that makes
handling so much better

5. Perimeter Frame
This frame is known as Twin Spar or beam frames. The engine is suspended from
the frame and it can be held around in perimeter of frame.

6. Monocoque Frame
The panels form the chassis and no other separate frame. No other separate frames
added but other parts like air-box and engine form a part of the chassis.
