Full-Scale Consideration of a Self-Defense Force "Joint Commander" to concerns about the

Taiwan contingency, and the need for greater mobility in unit operations

On April 6th, after a number of interviews with Japanese government officials, it was discovered that
the Ministry of Defense has decided to establish a new Joint Command. The Joint Command will
command the Ground, Maritime, and Air Self-Defense Forces. With a supporting Joint Command in
place, and has begun a full-scale study of the organizational form and location. The government has
determined that it is necessary to increase mobility by establishing a new post dedicated to unit
operations, bearing in mind the situation where China's maritime expansion is increasing and there is
concern about a Taiwan contingency, as well as the need to respond to the new domains of space,
cyber, and electromagnetic wave security.

On June 6, 2022, it was reported that the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States and Taiwan have
begun a full-fledged study to create a new Joint Command and have the newly created post of Joint
Commander concentrate on force operations in order to respond to the growing possibility of a
Taiwan contingency due to China's aggressive maritime expansion and new areas of security, such as
space, cyber, and electromagnetic waves. It was reported that

The government will make adjustments so that the creation of the Joint Commander will be included
within the National Security Strategy, a long-term guideline for foreign and national security policy
to be revised by the end of the year.
