Lesson Write an exposition or discussion on a
familiar issue to include key structural
1 elements and language features

In this module, you will learn what expository writing is. Expository
writing is used to convey factual information (as opposed to creative writing,
such as fiction). It is the language of learning and understanding the world
around us. Expository writing is everywhere in everyday life, not just
academic settings. Expository writing is present anytime there’s information
to be conveyed. It can take form in an academic paper, an article for a
newspaper, a report for a business, or even book-length nonfiction. It
explains, informs, and describes.

Let’s Recall

Directions: Identify the social implications of writing as a macro skill in developing

one’s expertise and talent in writing.

Let’s Explore

Essay: Coronavirus has affected us so much

I am a member of a youth fraternity and a Boys & Girls Club member. Right
now, in the world we are in a fight of our lives against the coronavirus. It
has affected many people including myself. I'm now at home every day and it
really is affecting me socially. Not being able to speak to friends and see
people I see on a regular basis is hard for me. Also, now that school is closed
for the rest of the year it has really had an effect on my school life. I am not
used to being at home all the time and working on the computer. I'm usually
in a classroom surrounded by my peers. However, I am human so I will
learn to adapt, but for now it is hard.

It has affected me personally in the social and educational aspect, but I
know around the city of Detroit it's affecting others as well. In Detroit, which
is one of the cities around the country hit hard by the virus, the pandemic
has also affected the youth. Youth are now forced to stay home instead of
going to school and spending time with friends. Most kids need to be outside
and with people to release their energy and socialize. Now this cannot
happen, because the virus has affected us so much. One thing we also see
happening is food insecurities and social distancing. Due to what is
happening in the world, people are very much afraid and cautious about
food supply and interactions with people. People are afraid and are told to
stay inside, so we stock up supplies that will last them about a month.
Usually people get stuff that we will last them about two weeks, but now we
need to stay home as much as we can.

With social distancing, we now separate ourselves from other parts of
society. This has made me feel very much disconnected from my friends.
Humans are made to be out and about and socialize with beings on Earth.
These unfortunate events have led many people to be disconnected from
society. This has allowed my mind to go to the dark side, where my fears
come out. My main fear is “How long will my life be on pause?” I’m afraid of
how long I will be stuck in the house and can’t see my friends. Will it be a
couple more weeks or will it be a couple months?

The Boys & Girls Club has helped me a lot during this crisis. Just for a
couple hours, I’m able to forget about the real world and have a good time.
This is because the club has come to us. The Virtual Club has helped me
still talk to people and meet new people as well. BGCSM has helped me
through a lot of things in my life these past few years. So, I know for sure it
helps other kids through these tough times. This experience with BGCSM
virtually is helping lighten my heart, through my darkest time.

This essay is part of a four-part series in partnership with the Boys & Girls
Clubs of Southeastern Michigan exploring the impact on youth and local
organizations serving youths as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Comprehension Questions: Please use an extra sheet for this part.

1. Why do teenagers and adults have to stay home?

2. Why do educational institutions have to remain closed amidst the

pandemic?

3. Getting into the shoes of the narrator, and as a future teacher, how
would you help him cope with his frustrations as a student or
individual?

4. How would you help this young man answer his question, “How long
will my life be on pause?” given that you already experience the same
situation?

5. As a student, how would you help the community prevent the spread
of COVID-19?

Let’s Elaborate

What is an exposition?
● What do you do when you have to persuade someone to consider your point
of view?
- Make a stand about an issue
- Support your point of view
- Conclude by stating the benefits of your approach

An exposition is a text that presents one side of the issue. The purpose is to
persuade the reader or listener by presenting one side of an argument, that is,
the case for or against..”

Types of Expositions
● Debates
● Expository essay
● Editorials
● Speeches (Situational Writing)
● Spoken arguments
● Legal defences (in court)
● Reviews of books, movies, online games, blogs etc.

Discussion – Do not immediately take a stand.

- Present various possibilities, review the arguments and then make a
considered judgment
Exposition – Take a stand immediately, present only one side of the issue,
attempt to persuade the audience (listeners or readers) to accept the author’s point
of view.
Language Features

⮚ Use Simple Present Tense

⮚Use words that express attitude

- Gives a more convincing/sincere tone
- “… the people must be given the benefit of”
- “…These things rarely occur more than once”

⮚Use of verbs of belief

- “I can convince you that…”
- “I can prove to you that…”
-
⮚Use connectors to do with reason and choice
- “…You will fail unless you follow my suggestion…”

has become worse…”

⮚Use emotive words and phrases

- “…We all love our country and we are all proud of our
achievements…”
- “…It is distressing to see her suffer at this time…”

⮚Use adverbs that show time sequence and link the arguments such as
first, next, previously and finally
- “…We must resolve our difficulties before they become worse. First we
need to… Then we must. After this we have to…”

⮚Use rhetorical questions

- “… Can our country afford this?...”
- “…Do you really want this to happen?...”

Steps on how to write an Expository writing:

1. Choose your topic and decide your stand: Are you for or against?
2. List 4 or 5 points to support your point of view:
Brainstorm – no particular order
Arrange them in a coherent sequence that brings out your stand
3. Collect all the evidences you will need for each point
Quote statistics
Give examples
Quote statements from authorities
Include a moral statement
Tell a “real life” story that illustrates your point

Structure of an Exposition

An Introductory Statement- is the initial sentence that makes the ultimate point,
introduces the idea or importance and opens the door to the meat of the content.
Also, it serves to grab the reader's attention and ease them into the narrative as
just throwing them into the middle of it is confusing and boring.

A Series of Arguments- of statements (in a natural language), called the premises

or premisses (both spellings are acceptable), intended to determine the degree of
truth of another statement, the conclusion.

A conclusion- this sums up the whole argument

Let’s Dig In

Directions: Read the selection. Identify which of the following excerpts presenting one
side of an argument, that is, the case for or against.

From “How Does Michael Fly?”

No conversation about Michael Jordan is complete without

references to hang time. So, what exactly is hang time? The velocity,
or speed, a player has when he takes off, combined with the path his
center of gravity follows on the way up, plus body manipulations along
the way, fool us into thinking he’s hanging in the air for an unusually
long period of time…
…So, how is it he’s able to hit the heights he does? Michael’s
rocket-powered leaps are helped by long legs and a slender torso,
which give him a higher center of gravity. However, it’s the makeup of
his muscles, mainly the quadriceps, calf muscles and gluteus, that
gives him the power.
A good jumper will have muscles that store elastic energy and
also a larger percentage of fast-twitch than slow-twitch fibers…
When it comes to technique, Jordan’s flight patterns can’t be
duplicated. “I just make it up,” he admits.

Should I worry? How can I protect myself?

The WHO declared the virus a pandemic on March 11 and said
it was “deeply concerned by the alarming levels of spread and severity”
of the outbreak.

The WHO recommends basic hygiene such as regularly washing

hands with soap and water, and covering your mouth with your elbow
when sneezing or coughing.
Maintain “social distancing” – keeping at least 1.8 (six feet)
between yourself and others – particularly if they are coughing and
sneezing, and avoid touching, eyes and mouth with unwashed.

The Great Depression

The Great Depression was in its final years. World War II waited
across the ocean in Europe. Out of this time came two of our earliest
comic-book superheroes.
Superman appeared in 1938. When fighting crime, he flew
through the air, wearing a caped costume to disguise his true identity.
Today, we know him as The Man of Steel, dedicated to helping others,
an orphan from the plan et Krypton
In 1939 Batman was created. Like Superman, he was a caped
hero with secret identity and a mission to make the world a better
place. In some ways, however, Batman was one of a kind. For
instance, he was the first Earth-born superhero. He covered his face
with a mask. And to get around, he drove a one-of-a-kind car called
the Batmobile.
Now, more than fifty years later, the world is a different place
with many different problems. Although times have changed, many of
our superheroes to call on whenever we need one.

Most people are scared of sharks, but Dr. Eugenio Clark, a
famous marine biologist, says that they should not be. She and other
scientists have done studies to prove that sharks aren’t so scary. She
published some of her findings in the National Geographic article
“Sharks: Magnificent and Misunderstood” in August 1981.
According to Clark, sharks don’t just swim around, eating all
the time. Some sharks go for weeks without eating. Basking sharks
and whale sharks eat and only plankton and small fish. Sharks
typically do not bite people unless they feel threatened and need to
protect themselves.
After reading about Dr. Clark’s adventures. I learned that people
still have much to learn about sharks. It’s good to learn more, though,
because the new information lets us understand what’s really true
about sharks. Now I can swim without being scared.
