Electrical machines II
Tutorials (part One)

Tutorial 1.1

Give a table showing the needed speed of rotation for a synchronous generator of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
pairs of poles to produce voltages of frequencies 50, 60 Hz.

Tutorial 1.2

A 300 kW – 60Hz, high sensibility electrical load imported from Europe to Cameroon need to be
used. Knowing that the standard frequency in Cameroon is 50Hz a system composed of a
synchronous motor coupled with a 24-poles synchronous generator is set. How many poles the motor
should have in order to convert 50Hz power to 60Hz power?

Tutorial 1.3

A three-phase Y-connected 50Hz two-pole synchronous machine has a stator with 4000 conductors
per phase. What rotor flux would be required to produce a terminal (line-to-line) voltage of 6 kV?

Tutorial 1.4

A delta-connected three-phase alternator generates a 360 V open-circuit voltage at 60 Hz when the

field current is 3.6 A. Neglecting saturation, determine the open-circuit EMF when the frequency is
40 Hz and the field current 2.4 A.

Tutorial 1.5

A 3-phase synchronous generator with 4-poles, 3600 series conductors/phase of 0.1 mΩ each is Y-
connected and driven at 1500 rpm, under a flux of 10.01 mWb. With the same field current, the AC
terminals are short-circuited, and the three line currents are found to be 800A.

1) Calculate the open-circuit line voltage.

2) Knowing that the flux is given by Ф=2.002×10-4.If Gives the corresponding field current
3) Calculate the synchronous reactance per phase
4) Calculate the line current if three 12Ω resistors are Y-connected across the terminals

Tutorial 1.6

A three-phase, 12-pole alternator Y-connected has with 108 slots and 20 conductors per slot and
rotates at 500rpm. The flux per pole is 20 mWb. Assuming full pitch coils,

Calculate
1) The frequency of the voltages
2) The distribution factor
3) The phase and line EMF.

Tutorial 1.7

Let’s consider a star-connected 3-phase, 6-pole alternator which runs at 1200 rpm, having flux per
pole of 0.1 Wb sinusoidally distributed. Its stator has 54 slots and 8 conductors per slots. The
armature winding is short pitched by one slot.
Calculate
1) The pitch factor
2) The frequency
3) The distribution factor
4) The phase and the line EMF

Tutorial 1.8

A 3-phase, Δ-connected, 12-pole alternator has 216 slots with 2 conductors per slot. The speed of
rotation is 500 rpm. The flux is 50 mWb and the coil span as 150° electrical.
Calculate
1) The frequency of voltages
2) The winding factor of the machine
3) The line EMF.

Tutorial 1.9

A 3-phase, Y-connected, round-rotor synchronous generator rated at 10 kVA, 230 V has a

synchronous reactance of 1.2 Ω per phase and an armature resistance of 0.5 Ω per phase.
Assuming a 0.8 lagging power factor
1) Draw the single phase equivalent circuit of the machine
2) What is the value of the phase terminal voltage and the phase current
3) Sketch the corresponding phasor diagram
4) From the phasor diagram give an expression of the induced EMF
5) Calculate the percent voltage regulation at full-load.

Tutorial 1.10

In a 50-kVA, star-connected, 440-V, 3-phase, 50Hz alternator, the effective armature resistance is
0.25 ohm per phase. The synchronous reactance is 3.2Ω per phase and leakage reactance is 0.5Ω per
phase. We will not neglect the armature reaction. At rated load and unity power factor:

1) Draw the single phase equivalent circuit

2) Draw the corresponding phasor diagram

Calculate
3) The Internal EMF
4) The no-load EMF
5) The percentage regulation on full-load
6) The value of armature reaction reactance
