We care for a safer world
GMES is established to fulfil the growing need amongst European policy-makers to access accurate and timely information services to better manage the environment, understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure security.

GMES Services
Monitoring Earth sub-systems: Land: land use and land cover changes Ocean: sustainable ocean resources and impact of environmental hazards Atmosphere: effect of greenhouse gases and aerosols on climate change, air quality, and ultraviolet radiation Other Services: Emergency: rapid mapping services in case of humanitarian crises and natural or man-made disasters Security: maritime surveillance, conflict prevention and mitigation outside Europe Climate change is cutting across the above domains
We care for a safer world
GMES is a prime example of a critical European Programme with clear potential links to Galileo and EGNOS. The European GNSS programmes will be important partners in GMES, due to their complementarity. Role of GNSS in emergency services such as SAR, disaster relief and environmental monitoring: Tracking floods, fires, oil spills and earth quakes Support of relevant EU/ ESA projects within GMES: MARISS (controlling and monitoring maritime traffic, coastal monitoring) SAFER ( Validates the pre-operational versions of the GMES Emergency Response Service: rapid mapping, assessment maps, etc) RESPOND (humanitarian, disaster and security topics) Potential role in support of CFSP/ ESDP operations G-MOSAIC (geo-spatial information in support of EU external actions)
