An adjective is a describing word.

It describes a noun in a given sentence.

An adjective is a describing word.

It tells you more about a noun.

An adjective usually appears before the


noun it describes.

Sometimes, though, the adjective appears


after the noun, later in the sentence
• a busy street
• a dark corner
• a deep sea
• a large bed
• It is windy.
• John's handwriting is very neat.
• The sea is rough.
• All the players are very tall.
• The baby's hands are very small.
• Sue's drawing is beautiful.
• That problem is too difficult.
• Peter is very quiet today.
Describes the NATURE of the noun

It tells us what kind of person or a thing is.

• Harish is an intelligent boy.

• Rose is a beautiful flower.


Describes the approximate AMOUNT of the noun

It tells us how much of a thing is intended


or meant.

• I gave enough food to the


beggar.

• Give me some salt.


Adjective of Quantity answers the question “how much”
Describes the NUMBER of nouns

It tells us how many persons or things are


there.
• I saw many children in the
park.

• Four burglars entered the


house.

Adjective of Number answers the question “how many”


Used to refer to INDIVIDUAL nouns

It is used to point out nouns.

• These books are new.

• This pen is mine.

• I want those dresses.

Demonstrative Adjective answers the question “which”


Used to refer to POSSESION of nouns

Used to show possession or belonging.

• Her purse is nice.

• He got his pen back.

• Your dress is new.

Possessive Adjectives answers the question “whose”


Used to ASK QUESTION about nouns

• Which bag is yours?

• Whose pen is this?

• What colour is your shirt?

Possessive Adjectives answers the question “whose”


What is a suffix?
A suffix is a part added to the end of a word to make a new
word.
Some adjectives can be identified by their suffixes.

Some examples are:

ADJECTIVES to create new ADJECTIVES.
