Sepam Protective Relays Restricted to Schneider Electric Personnel

1. Why a new product

Sepam MV protective relays are an IEC product and have been introduced in the US and Canadian ANSI market. In addition to the
IEC hardware, the supporting products such as configuration software, technical manuals, and option modules are structured with IEC
terminology and symbols. As a result, Sepam has not been received well in the US and Canadian ANSI market.

A project has been implemented to modify Sepam to more closely adhere to ANSI requirements:
• Create US English language files to be downloaded into the relays which will show ANSI terminology and symbols.
• Brand label Sepam to Square D from Merlin Gerin
• Change IEC documents to ANSI documents using ANSI terminology and symbols.
• Change configuration software (SFT2841) to allow selection of US English which will use ANSI terminology and symbols in the
configuration screens and help files

Square D branding of Sepam relays is intended to take advantage of the Square D brand identity in the U.S. and Canadian market. In
addition, creation of ANSI documentation including manuals, catalogs, software, data sheets, etc. will provide information in the
format most recognized in the market.

Replacement of the CCA630 with the CCA634 CT connector will provide connection to zero sequence CT’s for direct measurement
of ground fault current without the need for the CSH30 remote mount option.

2. Product presentation
The Sepam (Square D Electrical Protection and Monitoring) range of protection relays is designed for all protection applications on
medium-voltage public and industrial distribution networks.

It consists of three series of relays, with increasing levels of performance:

Sepam Protective Relays Restricted to Schneider Electric Personnel

Features Benefits
Same form factor and options for all applications in same Series Each Sepam relay series support several applications depending
upon the catalog number selected.

• Series 20: Substation, motor, transformer, bus

• Series 40: Substation, motor, transformer, generator
• Series 80: Substation, motor, transformer, generator,
capacitor, transformer/generator, transformer/motor

Within the same series, the relay has the same form factor,
connector architecture, installation, option modules, and
operation regardless of the application. This improves
understanding of the relays in that wiring, installation, and
operation are the same for a transformer relay as a generator
relay, as a motor relay, etc.
Waveform and event capture All Sepam relays provide waveform/event capture capabilities.
This provides the user with the ability to view voltage, current,
and I/O states before, during, and after the event. Event time
and cause are quickly determined to minimize system
troubleshooting, repair, and ultimately downtime.
Logic Equation Editor (Series 40/80) This function can be used to configure simple logic functions by
combining data received from the protection functions or logic
inputs. By using logic operators (AND, OR, XOR, NOT) and
time delays, new processing operations and indications can be
added to the existing ones.

The logic functions produce outputs that can be used in:

• the matrix to control relay outputs, light up LEDs or
display new messages
• the protection functions to create new blocking or reset
conditions
• circuit breaker control to add cases of circuit breaker
tripping, closing or blocking
• disturbance recording to record particular logic data

One commissioning software common for all Sepam relays SFT2841 software is used to program and commission all
Sepam relays regardless of the series or application. It is a
Microsoft Windows based package that is easy to use with
context sensitive help.

Relay configuration can be defined off-line for later download,

on-line in PC-to-relay serial connection, or across a
communications network via modem, serial daisy-chain, or
Modbus TCP/IP.
SFT2841 user defined on-screen messages The user can modify pre-defined screen messages or create his
own. The messages are assigned to protective function, I/O,
control functions, and logic equation variables.
Logipam ladder logic programming (Series 80 with SFT080 opt.) Series 80 relays with the SFT080 option can accept ladder logic
programs created with SFT2885 software. This gives the relay
PLC capabilities for significantly enhanced control and
monitoring functionality.
SMS and Transparent Ready Sepam relays are supported in SMS and Transparent Ready
applications.

8. Schedule (availability)
All Square D branded Sepam products will be available from the LaVergne, Tennessee facility NLT 8/14/2007.

9. Impact of Existing Product Obsolescence

9.1 Description of change
Sepam relays will carry a Square D label on the front with Schneider Electric labels on option modules. All packaging will
carry the Square D or Schneider Electric brand with Merlin Gerin no longer used. US English will be the default “Local
Language” provided in the relays. This will provide ANSI screen, messages, and displays on the advanced and mimic
UMI’s. The basic hardware, firmware, and operation of the relays will be unchanged. SFT2841 commissioning software
will provide US English and ANSI help/terminology as a selection when starting the software.

The standard CCA630 CT connector will be replaced by the CCA634 CT connector. This will provide connection to third
party zero sequence CT’s without using the CSH30 interposing CT.

New and Existing Orders:

ƒ We will continue to ship the SP1XXXX relays until August 14, 2007.
ƒ The “new” Square D branded SQ1XXXX relays will be available for shipment on August 15, 2007.
ƒ For all new orders scheduled to ship August 15, 2007 the SQ1XXXX catalog numbers should be used.

9.2 Disposition of Merlin Gerin products

ƒ Merlin Gerin branded Sepam relays will no longer be sold in the U.S and Canadian markets after 8/15/2007.
ƒ Merlin Gerin branded Sepam relays will continue to be supported through PMC LaVergne..
ƒ Contact PMC LaVergne for availability of replacement units and component repair.

9.3 Return policy for Merlin Gerin Sepam relays

Return will not be required as these relays will function as required with no impact on the customer. If desired, customers
can return Merlin Gerin branded relays to PMC LaVergne for “upgrade” to the Square D brand. Cost for this service will be
determined at a later date. If a Merlin Gerin branded relay is returned under warranty, the customer will receive a Square D
branded relay.

9.4 Customer Letter

To be drafted.

10. Product Issues and Solutions

There are no major issues with the Square D branded Sepam relays as the hardware and firmware design remain unchanged. Labeling
of the relays and option modules have changed along with adding U.S. English and ANSI support for the software ,relay screens, and
documentation. This should make Sepam more readily accepted by consulting engineers, customers, and the ANSI market in general.

11. Selling Against the Competition

A) Schweitzer Labs – SEL basically owns the utility market and is increasing penetration into the industrial and commercial
marketplace. Sepam relays are targeted on the industrial and commercial markets. In these markets, we will quote against SEL on
price and functionality stressing Sepam’s unique advantages of modularity, form factor, and ease of use.
B) GE/Multilin – Multilin is a major player in the industrial and commercial marketplace. We will continue to quote against GE on
price and functionality stressing Sepam’s unique advantages of modularity, form factor, and ease of use.
C) Others (Basler, ABB, CH, etc) – We will continue to quote against all competition on price and functionality stressing Sepam’s
unique advantages of modularity, form factor, and ease of use.

When selling against the competition, stress Sepam’s advantages. Focus most specifically on ease of use, commissioning, common
software platform, and modularity.
Sepam relay advantages
ƒ Easy installation & removal
ƒ Advanced UMI, multiple quantities, test/graphics, English message, same for all relays/applications
ƒ SFT2841 Commissioning Software
o Easy to use
o Intuitive
o Context sensitive help
o Same for all relays/applications
ƒ Modularity; buy only functions required
ƒ Same form factor and options for relays in same Series
ƒ Light weight
ƒ Remote mount display option

Sepam relay disadvantages

ƒ Modularity; extra mounting space required for option modules
To combat this, stress the fact that only those functions required for the application need to be purchased. If necessary more
functions can be added at a later date.
ƒ Market Acceptance
To combat this, we are completing the Sepam for the ANSI Market project and brand labeling the relay Square D. In
addition, we will be promoting the relay at tradeshows (i.e. PCIC), in advertising, lunch-n-learns, etc.
