Activity 6 ( Learning Activity 2 Sg6)

Instructions;

After watching the documentary and reflecting on its connection to human flourishing,
write an analysis of the documentary by answer the following questions:

1. What is scientism? Why was Lewis against it?

2. Science was compared science to magic in three ways: as religion, as credulity,
and as power. Explain his comparison for each case.
3. Based on what you have learned in the documentary film, what is the presented
principle of modernity and its values in the magician’s twin?
4. How does scientism threaten the human person thriving in science and
technology? Why should science adhere to a moral basis that is not dictated by
science itself?

Answers:
1. Scientism is the view that science is the best or only objective means by which
society should determine normative and epistemological values. While the term
was originally defined to mean "methods and attitudes typical of or attributed to
the natural scientist", some religious scholars (and subsequently many others)
adopted it as a pejorative with the meaning "an exaggerated trust in the efficacy of
the methods of natural science applied to all areas of investigation (as in
philosophy, the social sciences, and the humanities)". Although Lewis’ extensive
collections of writings contain many arguments against scientism, one work in
particular focuses on refuting the power of science. Published in 1943, The
Abolition of Man, is one of Lewis’ central statements on the subject. Based on the
Riddell Memorial Lectures that Lewis had delivered earlier that year, the book
warns of the danger of scientism destroying the true value of humanity.
2. a. Science as religion
Religion is everywhere and it affects all of life. Since science has the ability to
function as an alternative to religion.
b. Science as credulity
He observed that most of the time people easily believed something when they
heard that it claims in the name of science. Even if there are no explanations and
evidences to back it up. He just wanted to convey that before believing we should
understand it more and confirm if it’s really true.
c. Science as power
To the public, science with its capabilities and possibilities that are so great and
endless seems like magical with what you can almost discover with science and
also with what you can do with it. With the fear of unknown people submit to the
power of science.
3. Modernity, or modernism is defined by incredulity toward metanarratives (which
itself is a metanarrative). A metanarrative is the over all story of how we became.
Rejecting all of them is a means of social anarchy. There are no longer rules
thought of as right and wrong, do whatever you want. We have been taught in our
schools for more than forty years that there are no moral rules, there is no God to
judge, do what you think if right. Now kids bring weapons to schools and kill
classmates. We all know this is horribly wrong, but do nothing to correct the
modernism and naturalism which causes this, and the blatant disrespect toward
our fellow man. Women tend to be the first to suffer when moral laws are ignored.
4. Science as a philosophy or 'almost religious affiliation’ if it becomes dogma for a
person flourshing in science potentially poses the following negative connotations
By limiting one's perspection to only view all non-science work related matters
including personal, philsophical or religious beliefs to be filtered through the
SCIENTIFIC METHOD in one’s life choices, limits free-will considerations in these
areas.
Your choice of mate - does not have to fit into a standardized, categorized, boxed
in and logically approved, well pschoanalyzed, static structure and for the sake of
experiencing ‘a romantic connection’ during the one lifetime - which is all you have
to experience it - don't use scientific dogma to 'miss out’ on this often, not logical
experience.
Belief in a higher being - of whatever nature one may conceive - in the vast
majority of cases - requires a belief in things by means of only - 'faith’ -strict
adherence to an extreme scientific dogma can wipe-out nessacary for conversion
to the higher being's - possiblity as a choice and create a static belief in only
tested proven and man-viewed, fragmented, isolating - ideaology to be one's
lifelong choice - removing again 'a possibly more enriched existence’ for the
scientific based thinker.
