NOTE
The OptiX RTN 910A supports a wide range of interfaces and service bearer technologies,
and is therefore compatible with various backhaul networks. Specifically, packet services
can be backhauled through TDM networks, and TDM services can be backhauled through
packet networks.
OptiX RTN 910A also provides Routing microwave solutions for LTE bearer
networks. In this solution, the OptiX RTN 910A functions as a CSG and works with
routers that function as ASGs and RSGs to provide end-to-end L3VPN services. The
routers can be Huawei CX600s or other routers. Figure 1-2 shows the Routing
microwave transmission solution provided by the OptiX RTN 910A.
The Routing microwave transmission solution can be used in end-to-end Layer 3
networking. When deployed for backhauling services from a multitude of base
stations, the solution simplifies VLAN planning, reduces broadcast traffic, and
reduces configuration modifications on the transmission network when the
wireless network changes.

1.2 Components
The OptiX RTN 910A adopts a split structure. The system consists of the IDU 910A
and the ODU. Each ODU is connected to the IDU 910A through the IF cable.
IDU 910A
The IDU 910A is the indoor unit of the OptiX RTN 910A. It receives/transmits
services, and performs switching, multiplexing, and IF processing, and system
communication and control.
Table 1-2 describes the specifications of the IDU 910A.

a: Both port GE5 and port GE6 support 2.5GE optical modules. If either port GE5
or port GE6 uses a 2.5GE optical module, the other must also use a 2.5GE
optical module.
b: When the XMC-5D ODU works at 18 GHz, the channel spacing of the IDU
910A can also be set to 14_ACCP/28_ACCP/56_ACCP/112_ACCP to improve the
modulation mode when the channel spacing is 14 MHz, 28 MHz, 56 MHz, or
112 MHz. This type of channel spacing is used when CA is configured or two
XMC-5D ODUs are used to configure 4+0.
ODU
The ODU is the outdoor unit of the OptiX RTN 900. It provides functions including
frequency conversion and power amplification of signals.
The RTN 600 ODU and RTN XMC ODU are available in the OptiX RTN 900 product
series, covering the entire frequency band from 6 GHz to 42 GHz.
NOTE
Table 1-3 lists the highest modulation schemes supported by the ODU in different
frequency bands. For the highest modulation scheme supported by the ODU in different
channel spacings, see 5.1.1.1 IF Running Modes and Microwave Work Modes in Product
Description.
The XMC-3 ODU (112 MHz) is a high-performance ODU that supports a channel spacing of
112 MHz at the 18/23 GHz frequency band. The common XMC-3 ODU supports a channel
spacing of 56 MHz at the 18/23 GHz frequency band. The XMC-3 ODU (112 MHz) has the
same appearance as the common XMC-3 ODU, but has different technical specifications.
Unless otherwise specified, the same parts in this document are represented by XMC-3
ODUs, and the difference parts are represented by XMC-3 ODUs (112 MHz) and common
XMC-3 ODUs.

Table 1-4 RTN 600 ODUs supported by the OptiX RTN 910A
Item High-Power ODU Standard-Power ODU
There are two methods for mounting the ODU and the antenna: direct mounting
and separate mounting.
● Direct mounting is generally adopted when a small- or medium-diameter
single-polarized antenna is used. In this situation, if one ODU is configured for
one antenna, the ODU is directly mounted at the back of the antenna. If two
ODUs are configured for one antenna, an RF signal combiner/splitter (hence
referred to as a hybrid coupler) must be mounted to connect the ODUs to the
antenna. Figure 1-4 shows direct mounting.
Direct mounting can also be adopted when a small- or medium-diameter
dual-polarized antenna is used. Two ODUs are mounted to an antenna using
an orthomode transducer (OMT). The method for installing an OMT is similar
to that for installing a hybrid coupler.
NOTE
The OptiX RTN 910A provides a full-band antenna solution that offers single-polarized/
dual-polarized antennas with a diameter of 0.3 m to 3.7 m and the corresponding antenna
accessories. In addition, the OptiX RTN 910A provides dual-band antennas with a diameter
of 0.3 m to 0.6 m, which are developed for SDB.
1.3 Highlights
This section describes the highlights of the OptiX RTN 910A.
5G Microwave
The OptiX RTN 910A launched by Huawei is the industry's first 5G microwave
device. The OptiX RTN 910A adopts technologies such as MIMO, CA, 8KQAM
modulation, and super dual band microwave (common-band and E-band
microwave) to provide transmission bandwidths of up to 10 Gbps. Using Huawei's
next-generation chips and optimization algorithms, the OptiX RTN 910A reduces
single-hop latency from hundreds of microseconds to tens of microseconds, which
is far lower than the latency requirement of 5G on bearer networks. The
innovative modular antenna enables smooth evolution to 5G networks without
changing the antenna installation platform or replacing the boards rather than the
10GE IDU subrack, maximizing the return on investment (ROI) in live networks. In
addition, based on Huawei's All-Cloud network architecture, the 5G-oriented
microwave solution can greatly improve network operation efficiency and
implement intelligent network O&M.
High Integration
The CSHR/CSHRF board adopts a high-density design. It integrates not only the
functions of the system control, switching, and timing board, but also the
functions of the service processing unit. Only one CSHR/CSHRF board is required
for an access site. The CSHR/CSHRF board also provides two extended slots, which
can house two IF boards. In this way, a single NE can provide a maximum of six
microwave directions, simplifying the deployment of high-density multi-direction
aggregation sites.
The OptiX RTN 910A provides a wide assortment of functions and features to
ensure the quality and efficiency of service transmission.

The OptiX RTN 910A supports the features of 5G microwave.
2.1.1 CA
This topic describes the carrier aggregation (CA) solution and its core values.
● The traditional N+0 configuration requires N ODUs for link transmission. New
hardware, such as IF boards, ODUs, hybrid couplers, and antennas, is always
required for capacity expansion.
● No additional outdoor hardware is required for CA-based capacity expansion
with the XMC-5D ODU.
● CA can work with spectral efficiency technologies such as XPIC to provide
larger-bandwidth solutions, for example, CA+XPIC.
2.1.2 MIMO
This topic describes the MIMO solution and its core values.
In the MIMO solution, the transmit end maps the data signal to be sent to
multiple antennas through space-time mapping before transmitting it. The receive
end recovers the data signal by performing space-time decoding on the signal that
is received by each antenna.
The MIMO solution supports two antenna installation modes: vertical separation
and horizontal separation. Typically, vertical separation is recommended. Figure
2-2 shows the application scenarios of the MIMO solution. Use horizontal
separation if the vertical installation space is limited or the pole mounting height
is not enough.
MIMO uses space multiplexing to improve the transmission rate of the system.
Space multiplexing is a method that divides data to be transmitted into multiple
data streams and then transmits them from different antennas.
The application of the MIMO technology makes space a resource for improving
communication performance, and can increase a coverage range of a wireless
system. The MIMO solution has the following advantages:
System Architecture
Super Dual Band utilizes the physical link aggregation (PLA), adaptive modulation
(AM), and QoS mechanisms to meet the requirements of MBB backhaul networks
on spectrum resources, capacities, transmission distances, and reliability. Super
Dual Band is designed to help MBB backhaul networks deliver the best experience.
Figure 2-3 uses the RTN 380 as an example. For details about system
configuration and specifications, see Super Dual Band Solution User Guide.
Advantage
● E-band microwaves deliver a scalable and large bandwidth. The throughput of
aggregated air-interface links can reach 10 Gbit/s in the future.
● The transmission distance of E-band microwaves is increased to three times
the original distance (increased to 10 km at the maximum), by means of
common-band microwave binding.
● PLA, AM, and HQoS queuing and rate limitation are utilized to ensure
99.999% availability of core services.
As the network bearing capacity increases, service and link information becomes
more complex, some disadvantages of traditional microwave service management
are increasingly emerging. On the traditional NMS, microwave NEs can be viewed
and managed only on a single NE, resulting in low network maintenance
efficiency. SDN provides visualized service views and allows users to process links
in batches. Currently, microwave supports the following SDN functions:
● Resource visualization: The 5G Microwave Automation app of NCE
automatically discovers and displays microwave resources on the network
topology, helping users learn the real-time status of the microwave network.
● Service provisioning: Templates common default configurations of microwave
services to simplify service configuration parameters (users only need to
provide data such as source and sink ports, service types, and bandwidth),
thereby implementing quick service provisioning.
● Network expansion: Users can quickly create an LAG/PLA/EPLA/EPLA+/XPIC
group based on microwave link on the network topology and expand the
bandwidth of the original link.
● NE upgrade: In the NE Wizard-based Upgrade window, you can upgrade the
software versions of selected NEs in one-click or batch mode.
● Network O&M: Network O&M is implemented based on network planning
data check, existing fault data, and alarm data.
IP Microwave Classification
IP microwave can transmit packet services and support the AM function. Packet
services can be Native Ethernet services, PWE3 packet services, or even L3VPN
services.
There are three typical types of IP microwave: Hybrid microwave, Packet
microwave, and Routing microwave.
● Hybrid microwave: Native TDM services and Native Ethernet services can be
transmitted concurrently through the air interface.
● Packet microwave: TDM services, ATM/IMA services, and Ethernet services
after PWE3 encapsulation are transmitted through the air interface.
● Routing microwave: Not only L3VPN services are transmitted, but also Native
TDM, Native Ethernet, and PWE3 services can be transmitted together with
them.
As IP microwave evolves, the OptiX RTN 910A supports Integrated IP microwave. It
supports concurrent Hybrid microwave, Packet microwave, and Routing
microwave, and can concurrently transmit multiple types of services over air
interfaces.
Integrated IP microwave
To achieve flexible grooming of TDM services and packet services on the
Integrated IP microwave, dual service planes are embedded in the OptiX RTN
910A: TDM service processing plane and packet service processing plane. TDM
services and packet services can be flexibly transmitted over the Integrated IP
microwave, as shown in Figure 2-4.
● TDM service processing plane
Performs cross-connections on the incoming TDM services (E1 services or
STM-1 services), and transmits the services to the microwave ports.
● Packet service processing plane
Processes and encapsulates multiple types of services (E1 services, ATM/IMA
services, and Ethernet services) as required and then transmits the services to
the microwave port. Specifically,
– For E1 services and ATM/IMA services, the packet service processing
plane performs PWE3 emulation and then encapsulates them into MPLS
packets for forwarding.
– For Ethernet services, the packet service processing plane performs Layer
2 switching and then forwards them as Native Ethernet services.
Alternatively, the packet service processing plane performs PWE3
emulation and encapsulates them into MPLS packets for forwarding, or
the packet service processing plane extracts IP packets from Ethernet,
routes and forwards the IP packets through the VRFs of the packet plane,
and then forwards the IP packets through the RSVP-TE tunnel or LDP LSP.
L3VPN services, Native TDM services, MPLS (PWE3) packets, or Native Ethernet
services need to be groomed to the microwave port, encapsulated into microwave
frames, and then transmitted on microwave links. Integrated IP microwave serves
as Hybrid microwave when TDM services are scheduled to the microwave port
over the TDM service processing plane and Ethernet services are scheduled as
Native packets to the microwave port over the packet service processing plane.
Integrated IP microwave serves as Packet microwave when TDM services and
Ethernet services are encapsulated into MPLS/PWE3 packets on the packet service
processing plane and then scheduled to the microwave port. Integrated IP
microwave serves as Routing microwave when L3VPN services are forwarded to
the microwave port through VRFs.
When Integrated IP microwave transmits STM-1 services and packet services concurrently,
STM-1 services have highest priority and their transmission is ensured.
● Priorities of E1 services
The priorities of E1 services are assigned based on the number of E1 services
that each modulation scheme can transmit. When modulation scheme
switching occurs, only the E1 services whose number is specified in the new
modulation scheme can be transmitted and the excess E1 services are
discarded.
● Priorities of packet services
With the QoS technology, packet services are scheduled to queues with
different priorities. The services in each priority queue are transmitted to the
microwave ports according to the queue scheduling algorithm. When
modulation scheme switching occurs, certain queues may be congested due
to insufficient capacity at the air interface. As a result, certain services or all
services in these queues are discarded.
Adaptive Modulation
Figure 2-5 uses the switching between six modulation schemes as an example to
describe the service change caused by AM. The orange part indicates E1 services.
The blue part indicates Ethernet services. The closer the service is to the surface of
the cylinder, the lower the service priority. Under all channel conditions, the
service capacity varies according to the modulation scheme. When the channel
conditions are unfavorable (during adverse weather conditions), lower-priority
services are discarded.
Characteristics
The AM technology used by of the OptiX RTN 910A has the following
characteristics:
2.4 PLA/EPLA/EPLA+
Physical link aggregation (PLA) aggregates microwave links and implements load
sharing based on physical bandwidths of the links.
● PLA mode: IF boards allocate traffic, and 2 physical links are aggregated as a
group.
● EPLA mode: The packet switching unit allocates traffic, and a maximum of 4
(CSHR) or 6 (CSHRF) physical links can be aggregated as a group.
● EPLA+ mode: The packet switching unit allocates traffic, and a maximum of 6
physical links can be aggregated as a group. An EPLA+ group must contain
links provided by an ISM6 board.

Hardware Security
The OptiX RTN 910A adopts high-reliability hardware design to ensure that the
system runs properly even if system security is threatened.
The following hardware preventive measures are provided:
● Microwave interfaces: The FEC encoding mode is adopted and the adaptive
time-domain equalizer for baseband signals is used. This enables the
microwave interfaces to tolerate strong interference. Therefore, an interceptor
cannot restore the contents in a data frame if coding details and service
configurations are not obtained at the same time.
● Modular design: Control units are separated from service units and service
units are separated from each other. In this manner, a fault on any unit can be
properly isolated, minimizing the impact of the fault on other units in the
system.
● CPU flow control: Data flows sent to the CPU for processing are classified and
controlled to prevent the CPU from being attacked by a large number of
packets. This ensures that the CPU operates properly under attacks.
Software Security
The OptiX RTN 910A processes three categories of data: O&M data, control plane
data, and service data. The preceding data is transmitted over independent
physical paths or logical paths and does not affect each other. Therefore, services
on the OptiX RTN 910A are processed on three planes:
● Management plane
The management plane provides equipment access and management
functions, such as account and password management for access control,
network communication protocols, and alarm reporting. The security feature
provided by the management plane enables secure equipment access,
concentrated management, and comprehensive security audit.
● Control plane
The control plane provides automatic calculation of trails to build and
manage services. Authentication is adopted to provide security for protocols
used at the control plane.
● Data plane
The data plane processes service data that enters the equipment and
forwards service data packets according to the hardware forwarding entries.
On one hand, the data plane prevents user service packets from being
intercepted, modified or deleted, which ensures the confidentiality and
integrity of user data. On the other hand, the data plane ensures controllable
hardware forwarding actions, preventing the forwarding entries from being
attacked or tampered with. In this manner, the forwarding plane of the
equipment can function stably and reliably.
Table 2-17 lists the security functions supported by each software plane.

3.2.2 ODU
The ODU is an integrated device that is available in several models. Different
models of ODUs have basically the same structure and working principle.
Block Diagram
IDU Software
The IDU software consists of NE software and board software.
● The NE software manages, monitors, and controls the IDU running status.
Through the NE software, the NMS communicates with the boards of the NE,
thereby implementing NE management. In addition, the NE software
communicates with the ODU software to manage and control the operation
of the ODU.
● The board software manages and controls the running status of other boards
of the IDU except the system control, switching, and timing board. The board
software of the Ethernet interface board or Ethernet processing board is
running stand alone in the board CPU. Software of other boards is integrated
as software modules with the NE software and runs in the CPU of the system
control, switching, and timing board.
ODU Software
The ODU software running in the ODU CPU manages and controls the running
status of the ODU. The ODU software controls the running of the ODU based on
the parameters delivered by the IDU software. The ODU running status is also
reported to the IDU software.

capability, and therefore has worse receiver sensitivity. It has, however, higher air interface
bandwidth.
the microwave working modes and air interface capacities supported by the OptiX
RTN 910A based on IS series boards.
Table 5-1 describes the IF running modes and microwave working modes.
NOTE
The highest-order modulation scheme that an IF port supports depends on factors such as
the ODU frequency band, XPIC status, and channel spacing.
When the XMC-5D ODU works in the 13/15/18 GHz frequency band and the channel
spacing is 7 MHz, the highest-order modulation scheme supported by the OptiX RTN 910A
is 256QAM. In the 18 GHz frequency band (except for when the channel spacing is 7 MHz),
the highest-order modulation scheme supported by the OptiX RTN 910A is 2048QAM.
NOTE
The ISM8 board can't work with the XMC-5D ODU, when using CSHR system control
boards.

● The throughput specifications listed in the tables are based on the following conditions.
● Without compression: untagged Ethernet frames with a length ranging from 64
bytes to 1518 bytes
● With L2 frame header compression: untagged Ethernet frames with a length
ranging from 64 bytes to 1518 bytes
● With L2+L3 frame header compression (IPv4): UDP messages, C-tagged Ethernet
frames with a length ranging from 70 bytes to 1518 bytes
● With L2+L3 frame header compression (IPv6): UDP messages, S-tagged Ethernet
frames with a length ranging from 94 bytes to 1518 bytes
● E1/STM-1 services need to occupy the corresponding bandwidth of the air interface
capacity. The bandwidth remaining after the E1/STM-1 service capacity is subtracted
from the air interface capacity can be provided for Ethernet services.

● Without compression: untagged Ethernet frames with a length ranging from 64 bytes
to 1518 bytes
● With L2 frame header compression: untagged Ethernet frames with a length ranging
from 64 bytes to 1518 bytes
● With L2+L3 frame header compression (IPv4): UDP messages, C-tagged Ethernet
frames with a length ranging from 70 bytes to 1518 bytes
● With L2+L3 frame header compression (IPv6): UDP messages, S-tagged Ethernet frames
with a length ranging from 94 bytes to 1518 bytes
● E1/STM-1 services need to occupy the corresponding bandwidth of the air interface capacity.
The bandwidth remaining after the E1/STM-1 service capacity is subtracted from the air
interface capacity can be provided for Ethernet services.

NOTE
The channel spacings supported by the OptiX RTN 910A comply with ETSI standards.
Channel spacings 14/28/56 MHz apply to most frequency bands; but channel spacings
13.75/27.5/55 MHz apply to the 18 GHz frequency band.
When being used in North America, ISV3 boards support the FCC 10/20/30/40/50 MHz
channel spacing. For details, see the User Guide for North America.
In IS3 mode, 2048QAM is used only when AM is enabled.
After AES-based encryption at air interfaces is enabled, overheads occupy additional air-
interface bandwidth (< 300 kbit/s). As a result, the maximum number of E1 services
decreases by one in the following modulation schemes:
● XPIC disabled: 7 MHz/QPSK Strong, 7 MHz/16QAM, 14 MHz/QPSK, and 14 MHz/
16QAM
● XPIC enabled: 14 MHz/QPSK Strong

In IS2 running mode and SDH service mode, the microwave work modes are the same
regardless of whether the XPIC function is enabled or disabled.
● The throughput specifications listed in the tables are based on the following conditions.
● Without compression: untagged Ethernet frames with a length ranging from 64 bytes
to 9600 bytes
● With L2 frame header compression: untagged Ethernet frames with a length ranging
from 64 bytes to 9600 bytes
● With L2+L3 frame header compression (IPv4): UDP messages, untagged Ethernet
frames with a length ranging from 64 bytes to 9600 bytes
● With L2+L3 frame header compression (IPv6): UDP messages, S-tagged Ethernet frames
with a length ranging from 92 bytes to 9600 bytes
● E1/STM-1 services need to occupy the corresponding bandwidth of the air interface capacity.
The bandwidth remaining after the E1/STM-1 service capacity is subtracted from the air
interface capacity can be provided for Ethernet services.

● The throughput specifications listed in the tables are based on the following
conditions:
– Without frame header compression: untagged Ethernet frames with a
length ranging from 64 bytes to 1518 bytes
– With L2 frame header compression: untagged Ethernet frames with a
length ranging from 64 bytes to 1518 bytes
– With L2+L3 frame header compression (IPv4): UDP packets, C-tagged
Ethernet frames with a length ranging from 70 bytes to 1518 bytes
– With L2+L3 frame header compression (IPv6): UDP packets, S-tagged
Ethernet frames with a length ranging from 94 bytes to 1518 bytes
● E1/STM-1 services occupy the bandwidth over the air interface prior to
Ethernet services, and only the remaining bandwidth can be provided for
Ethernet services.
● The throughput specifications indicate the single-link performance in 1+0
networking.
NOTE
● The throughput specifications listed in the tables are based on the following conditions.
● Without compression: untagged Ethernet frames with a length ranging from 64

NOTICE
This chapter describes performance for all the frequencies that the ODU supports.
For details about the frequencies that the ODU supports on this version, see 5.1.2
Frequency Band.
NOTE
For details about the modulation schemes supported by the ODU when working with an IF
board, see Table 5-1.
For ODUs operating at a T/R spacing that is not an integer, for example, 311.32 MHz,
151.614 MHz, or 252.04 MHz, the frequency stability is not ±5 ppm but still meets
requirements specified by the ETSI.
The maximum error between the actual transmit power of the ODU and the preset
transmit power on the NMS is ±2 dB; The maximum error between the actual transmit
power of the 38GHz 0 dB to -10dB and the preset transmit power on the NMS is ±3 dB.
When the receive power of the ODU is between -70 dBm and -30 dBm, the maximum error
between the actual receive power of the ODU and the receive power displayed on the NMS
is ±2 dB.
When the receive power of the ODU is between -90 dBm and -70 dBm, the maximum error
between the actual receive power of the ODU and the receive power displayed on the NMS
is ±3 dB.
When the receive power of the ODU is between -30 dBm and -20 dBm, the maximum error
between the actual receive power of the ODU and the receive power displayed on the NMS
is ±3 dB.
NOTICE
This chapter describes performance for all the frequencies that the ODU supports.
For details about the frequencies that the ODU supports on this version, see 5.1.2

NOTICE
This chapter describes performance for all the frequencies that the ODU supports.
For details about the frequencies that the ODU supports on this version, see 5.1.2
Frequency Band.
NOTE
XMC-3 ODUs.

NOTE
Failures in time (FITs) are an indicator of equipment reliability in the Telcordia SR-332 standard.
Both FITs and MTBF are affected by the quality level factor, electrical stress factor, and
temperature stress factor of the component.
The calculation formula between FITs and MTBF is as follows:
● FITs = 109/MTBF (hour)
● Annual failure rate (%) = [1/MTBF (year)] x 100%

C Glossary
Term Description
3G Third Generation
The third generation of digital wireless technology, as
defined by the International Telecommunications Union
(ITU). Third generation technology is expected to deliver
data transmission speeds between 144 kbit/s and 2 Mbit/s,
compared to the 9.6 kbit/s to 19.2 kbit/s offered by second
generation technology.
A/D analog/digit
Term Description
AF assured forwarding
One of the four per-hop behaviors (PHB) defined by the Diff-
Serv workgroup of IETF. It is suitable for certain key data
services that require assured bandwidth and short delay. For
traffic within the bandwidth limit, AF assures quality in
forwarding. For traffic that exceeds the bandwidth limit, AF
degrades the service class and continues to forward the
traffic instead of discarding the packets.
AM adaptive modulation
A technology that is used to automatically adjust the
modulation mode according to the channel quality. When
the channel quality is favorable, the equipment uses a high-
efficiency modulation mode to improve the transmission
efficiency and the spectrum utilization of the system. When
the channel quality is degraded, the equipment uses the low-
efficiency modulation mode to improve the anti-interference
capability of the link that carries high-priority services.
Term Description
baud rate The maximum rate of signal state changes per second on a
communications circuit. If each signal state change
corresponds to a code bit, then the baud rate and the bit rate
are the same. It is also possible for signal state changes to
correspond to more than one code bit, so the baud rate may
be lower than the code bit rate.
Term Description
BE best effort
A traditional IP packet transport service. In this service, the
diagrams are forwarded following the sequence of the time
they reach. All diagrams share the bandwidth of the network
and routers. The amount of resource that a diagram can use
depends of the time it reaches. BE service does not ensure
any improvement in delay time, jitter, packet loss ratio, and
high reliability.
Term Description
cable tie A cable tie (also known as a wire tie, hose tie, steggel tie, or
zip tie, and by the brand names Ty-Rap) is a type of fastener,
for holding items together, primarily electrical cables or
wires.
Term Description
CAD router
A device on the network layer that selects routes in the
network. The router selects the optimal route according to
the destination address of the received packet through a
network and forwards the packet to the next router. The last
router is responsible for sending the packet to the
destination host. Can be used to connect a LAN to a LAN, a
WAN to a WAN, or a LAN to the Internet.
CC continuity check
An Ethernet connectivity fault management (CFM) method
used to detect the connectivity between MEPs by having
each MEP periodically transmit a Continuity Check Message
(CCM).
CE customer edge
A part of the BGP/MPLS IP VPN model that provides
interfaces for directly connecting to the Service Provider (SP)
network. A CE can be a router, switch, or host.
Term Description
clock tracing The method of keeping the time on each node synchronized
with a clock source in the network.
CM connection management
Term Description
CW control word
DE discard eligible
Term Description
DM delay measurement
The time elapsed since the start of transmission of the first
bit of the frame by a source node until the reception of the
last bit of the loopbacked frame by the same source node,
when the loopback is performed at the frame's destination
node.
Term Description
Term Description
Ethernet A LAN technology that uses the carrier sense multiple access
with collision detection (CSMA/CD) media access control
method. The Ethernet network is highly reliable and easy to
maintain. The speed of an Ethernet interface can be 10
Mbit/s, 100 Mbit/s, 1000 Mbit/s, or 10,000 Mbit/s.
FD frequency diversity
The signal is transmitted using several frequency channels or
spread over a wide spectrum that is affected by frequency-
selective fading.
Term Description
gateway A device that receives data via one protocol and transmits it
via another.
Term Description
I/O input/output
IP Internet Protocol
Term Description
Term Description
LB loopback
A troubleshooting technique that returns a transmitted signal
to its source so that the signal or message can be analyzed
for errors. The loopback can be a inloop or outloop.
LM loss measurement
A method used to collect counter values applicable for
ingress and egress service frames where the counters
maintain a count of transmitted and received data frames
between a pair of MEPs.
Term Description
LSP tunnel An LSP over which traffic is transmitted based on labels that
are assigned to FECs on the ingress. The traffic is transparent
to the intermediate nodes.
MA maintenance association
MD maintenance domain
The network or the part of the network for which
connectivity is managed by connectivity fault management
(CFM). The devices in a maintenance domain are managed
by a single Internet service provider (ISP).
Term Description
MP maintenance point
MPLS L2VPN A network that provides the Layer 2 VPN service based on an
MPLS network. In this case, on a uniform MPLS network, the
carrier is able to provide Layer 2 VPNs of different media
types, such as ATM, FR, VLAN, Ethernet, and PPP.
MS multiplex section
Term Description
NE network element
Term Description
Term Description
PE provider edge
A device that is located in the backbone network of the
MPLS VPN structure. A PE is responsible for managing VPN
users, establishing LSPs between PEs, and exchanging routing
information between sites of the same VPN. A PE performs
the mapping and forwarding of packets between the private
network and the public channel. A PE can be a UPE, an SPE,
or an NPE.
Term Description
PW pseudo wire
An emulated connection between two PEs for transmitting
frames. The PW is established and maintained by PEs
through signaling protocols. The status information of a PW
is maintained by the two end PEs of a PW.
Term Description
route The path that network traffic takes from its source to its
destination. On a TCP/IP network, each IP packet is routed
independently. Routes can change dynamically.
Term Description
SD space diversity
A diversity scheme that enables two or more antennas
separated by a specific distance to transmit/receive the same
signal and selection is then performed between the two
signals to ease the impact of fading. Currently, only receive
SD is used.
SF signal fail
A signal indicating that associated data has failed in the
sense that a near-end defect condition (non-degrade defect)
is active.
Term Description
Term Description
subnet mask The subnet mask is a binary pattern that is stored in the
device and is matched with the IP address. A subnet mask is
used by the IP protocol to determine to which network
segment packets are destined. Subnet mask (also known as
netmask or address mask) is a 32-bit binary value used over
the TCP/IP network.
tangent ring A concept borrowed from geometry. Two tangent rings have
a common node between them. The common node often
leads to single-point failures.
Term Description
Term Description
VB virtual bridge
VC virtual container
An information structure used to support path layer
connections in the SDH. A VC consists of a payload and path
overhead (POH), which are organized in a block frame
structure that repeats every 125 μs or 500 μs.
