BASIC TYPES OF SPEECHES

By: JULIE G. LACERNA

INFORMATIVE SPEECH

An informative speech is one that intends to

educate the audience on a particular topic . The main
goal of an informative speech is to supply his audience
with facts, especially with facts new to them. The
speaker’s effort is directed at the amplification of the
quantity of facts stored up in the memory of his
audience.
INFORMATIVE SPEECH

The goal of this type of speech isn't to sway the audience to the
speaker's point of view. Instead, the details need to be laid before the
audience so that they can make an educated decision or learn about a subject
they are interested in.
INFORMATIVE SPEECH

Examples of Informative speech:

A teacher telling students about a certain topic
A student talking about her research
A computer programmer speaking about a new software
DEMONSTRATIVE SPEECH

This has many similarities with an informative speech. A

demonstrative speech teaches you how something
works or how to do a certain thing. It needs the help of
visual aids and/or physical demonstrations along with
the information provided.
DEMONSTRATIVE SPEECH

It’s like differentiating

between “what is” and “how
to” .
DEMONSTRATIVE SPEECH

Examples :

tutors explaining how to solve mathematical

equations
Chefs describing how to prepare a recipe
Developers demonstrating their products
PERSUASIVE SPEECH

A specific type of speech in which the

speaker has a goal of convincing the audience to accept
his or her point of view, and by extension, persuade the
audience to embrace that point of view.
PERSUASIVE SPEECH

Example:

A sales pitch. During a sales pitch, the speaker is

trying to convince the audience to buy his or her
product or service. If the salesperson is successful, the
audience (the person being sold to) will choose to
purchase the product or service.
COMPONENTS OF A PERSUASIVE SPEECH

1.  Logic appeals are arguments that present a set of

information and show why a conclusion must
rationally be true.

Example: Arguments heard in court are logical

arguments.
2.  Emotional appeals are appeals that seek to make
the audience feel a certain way so that they will
accept a conclusion.

Example: Negative political ads often incorporate

emotional appeals by juxtaposing an opponent with a
negative emotion such as fear.
ENTERTAINMENT SPEECH

An entertainment speech has one purpose to amuse and

entertain the audience. It's not intended to share
information or to persuade. Enjoy telling humorous
stories, amusing anecdotes and funny jokes.
