INTRO

You may wonder: "Why didn’t Jesus remain on earth instead of ascending into heaven?
If Jesus were with us, we could ask Him questions and see His miracles. Life and faith
would be so much easier!" Jesus said:

Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go
away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.  John 16: 7
And who is this? The Helper Jesus is talking about is the Holy Spirit.
So today we will study about the Holy Spirit and the work of the Holy Spirit and discuss
some of the misconceptions about the work of the Holy Spirit. Sinsasabi nila that the
Holy Spirit is the unknown God – because – basically the Holy Spirit does not draw
attention to itself.. ibig sabihn… the Holy Spirit works in the sidelines... sa likod ng
tabing… the Holy Spirit is sort of like a director… he directs what we see…
Some Christians will say – you have to experience the Holy Spirit... some will also say
that you have to have some sort of experience – to know that the Holy Spirit si in your
life. So, have you ha that experience? We want to be filled by the Holy Spirit – but how
does the Holy Spirit fill us? We want to experience the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives
– is it through supernatural experiences? Speaking in tongues or euphoric emotional
highs? So ano ba talaga… Again – let us look at the Scripture to teach us about the Holy
Spirit.
John 16:5 - 14

But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you
going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your
heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do
not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And
when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and
judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning
righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning
judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
12
“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit
of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own
authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that
are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
This passage will serve as a guide for our study this afternoon. We will not do an
exegetical verse by verse study but we will refer to our text every now and then. First
makita natin that Jesus said – v.7 --7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your
advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I
go, I will send him to you. (John 16: 7).
THE HOLY SPIRIT
John 14:26
According to Jesus, what will the “Helper” do?
26
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach
you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
So The H. S. will be helping us understand the teachings of Jesus and everything there
is to know about our salvation… not everything na will come from the curiosity of our
mind.. but what si essential for man’s salvation…and the Greek word for Helper is

παράκλητος
(PARAKLETOS)
“one called to the side of another”
in a court of justice: as Subst., advocate,
means “one called to the side of another”; paraclete -- what is the purpose of the calling
alongside: to counsel --- to advise us… spiritual counsel --- another function is to support
the one who needs it. This Counselor, or Paraclete, is God the Holy Spirit, the third
Person of the Trinity who has been “called to our side.” He is a personal being, and He
indwells every believer. IN the Old Testament the Hebrew term that refers to the Holy
Spirit…
‫רּו ַח‬
(RUACH)
BREATH, WIND, SPIRIT
Numbers 27:16; Job 27:3; Job 33:4
The Hebrew ruach means “wind,” “breath,” or “spirit.” The corresponding Greek word is
pneuma. Both words are commonly used in passages referring to the Holy Spirit.
God’s Ruach is the source of life. The Ruach of God is the One who gives life to all
creation. All living creatures owe the breath of life to the Creative Spirit of God. Moses
states this truth explicitly: “God . . . gives breath [ruach] to all living things” (Numbers
27:16). Job understood this truth as well: “As long as I have life within me, the breath
[ruach] of God in my nostrils” (Job 27:3). Later, Elihu tells Job, “The Spirit of God has
made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life” (Job 33:4).
3RD PERSON OF THE TRINITY
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS TRUE GOD.
Acts 5:3 – 4
He is not just a force – or some sort of an emanation.
Some groups do not believe that the Holy Spirit is a person in the Trinity – they say he is
just a power or force.. but in the book of Acts.. 1 single verse that proves the Holy Spirit
is God…
3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to
keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it
not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that
you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but ato God.”Peter
said that Satan had filled Ananias’s heart to “lie to the Holy Spirit” (Acts 5:3) and
concluded by saying that Ananias had “lied to God” (verse 4). So, the H.S. is God..but
he is also
DISTINCT FROM THE FATHER AND THE SON
John 14:26; John 15:26; Mark 1:10 - 11
Jesus told His disciples that the Holy Spirit, the Helper, was different from Himself. The
Father would send the Helper, the Spirit of truth, after Christ departed. He is distinct from
the Father and the Son, for in these passages Christ clearly differentiates between
Himself, the Father, and the Comforter.
The three members of the Trinity show up, together yet distinct, at Jesus’ baptism. As
Jesus comes up from the water, the Spirit descends on Him like a dove while the voice
of the Father is heard from heaven saying that He is pleased with His beloved Son..
So really he is not just a force… Star Wars – may the force be with you… hindi ganun..
not like that…
NOT A “MERE FORCE” OR POWER.
Ephesians 4:30; 1 Corinthians 12:4 – 7 2 Corinthians 13:14
Some view the Holy Spirit as a mystical force. Others understand the Holy Spirit as the
impersonal power that God makes available to followers of Christ.
Finally, the Bible describes the Holy Spirit as a person, not a mere force. He can be
grieved (Ephesians 4:30). He has a will (1 Corinthians 12:4-7) to each is given the
manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.. And He has fellowship with believers (2
Corinthians 13:14). Clearly, the Spirit is a person, just as the Father and the Son are
persons.

THE OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

PROPHESY:
Isaiah 44:3
Joel 2:28 – 29, 32
FULFILLMENT:
Acts 2:1 – 21.
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit—the pouring out of God’s Spirit to fill and indwell
people—was prophesied in the Old Testament and fulfilled at Pentecost (Acts 2).
This event was predicted in the Old Testament: in Isaiah 44:3 God said to Israel, “I will
pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on
your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.”
The Holy Spirit is pictured as the “water of life” that saves and blesses a dying people.
God is a river --- On the day of Pentecost, Peter quoted another prophecy as being
fulfilled: “I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants,
both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days…And everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Joel 2:28–29, 32).
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon humanity was the inauguration of the New
Covenant, which had been ratified by Jesus’ blood (Luke 22:20). An dof course te
fulfillment was in the book of Acts ---
Tower of babel – one language to reach the heavens
Pentecost – Many languages – one message to reach the heavens
Does it mean the the Holy Spirit only appeared in the New Testament?
Now hindi rin ibig sabihin na sa New Testament lang dumating ang Holy Spirit…
THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
Gen. 1:2
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and
the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
The ruach Elohim – andyan na… Ezra also prayed…
Nehemiah 9:20
You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their
mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst.
Hatubah Ruach -- Good Spirit – ano trabaho? To instruct them…another function is…
Psalm 104:30
When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground. “you
renew the face of the ground”.
When the Lord sends forth his ruah, life is created. In the beginning of time the Spirit
was there in Creation.. man was given the breath of life – now in the New Creation – we
are also given the Spirit of God… The Spirit of God also brings…judgment
Ezekiel 37:1 – 14
And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own
land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the
Lord.”
from these few verses….makita natin that the Holy Spirit was already in the Old
Testament... the Spirit is part of bringing judgement – but also of bringing life.
So definitely andyan na yun HS sa OT --- but ang pinagkaiba is that He has not
yet been manifested…
But now with the coming of Christ, all is forgiven, and creation has begun a new
and the spirit that we receive is in fact the Spirit of Christ. That's the spirit that
came on him in his baptism, the spirit that we receive in our baptism, the spirit
that led him to the cross and the spirit by which he was raised. That's the very
same Holy Spirit that we now receive. Okay clear ba? Naintindihan ba…
So, when Jesus say not yet given – it refers to pagpaila... Pagpapakilala…
manifest... Introduce…
But the Spirit has already been promised also many times – several times sa
previous lessons natin nabanggit ani Jesus ang parakletos… John 14:15 – 21,
Another helper…
And the full manifestation of the Spirit is in the book of Acts.
In our Epistle reading for Pentecost Sunday…
And so even now – the Holy Spirit is at work at this very moment… in each one
of us as we study God’s word – you cannot see the Spirit – but we kn ow He is n
our midst… why? That is His work…
THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
John 16:13 – 14
13
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak
on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the
things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to
you.
The Spirit's work is to place Jesus before the eyes and into the hearts of men, to make
His person and His work shine before them in all the excellencies of both!"
As Jesus clearly stated, He and the Holy Spirit speak with one voice!
The Holy Spirit takes everything Jesus did and said and, through His Word, "teaches it to
us” – makes it clear in our hearts…. In other words, although the Holy Spirit is a
spotlight – magnifying glass… teaches us everything there is to know about God, About
Jesu and about our salvation.
So, the H. S. never draws attention to itself… sabi nang iba hidni Pnetecostal ang mga
Lutherans.. the fact is we are penetecostal.. for we ecogize the work of the Holy Spirit in
our lives… sa atin lang hindi yung direct ana – the H. S. works through means…
The truth is this:
GOD SPEAKS THROUGH HIS WORD, WHICH NEVER CHANGES.
THE UNCHANGING TRUTH FOR THE CHANGING TIMES
As Christians it is important that we only base our teachings on the Scripture..
Not on superstitious beliefs, not on culture, not on popular opinions.. not even on our
feelings and emotions… and some even said God spoke to me… especially when it
comes to spiritual matters… Christians must be cautious in their eagerness to
"experience" the Holy Spirit! Church history shows that this eagerness is often diverted
by the devil into a variety of dangerous heresies and false teachings. These heresies
can distract and even destroy the sincerest Christian.
The Holy Spirit never comes to us through emotions, feelings, or intuition. The devil
would have us believe that the heavenly Father speaks to us through the Bible, but that
the Holy Spirit communicates to us through our thoughts, feelings, intuitions, and so on!
One of the devil's main deceptions concerning the Holy Spirit is his false claim that the
Spirit speaks to us apart from the Word of God, the Bible.
One of the errors that crept into the church was Montanism…
PROBLEM THEN AND NOW
Montanus, c. 156 AD, and the modem neo Pentecostal movement.
Montanus claimed that the age of revelation continued in his own day and that he
himself was the Paraclete described in John’s Gospel. With his two prophetesses, Prisca
and Maximilla, he led a religion marked by ecstatic outbursts, speaking in tongues, and
prophetic utterances. He established a new community in Phrygia, where his disciples
awaited the coming of the new Jerusalem
MONTANISM 133 – 177 AD
The essential principle of Montanism was that the Paraclete, the Spirit of truth, was
manifesting through Montanus and the prophets and prophetesses associated with him.
THE SPIRIT SPEAKS THROUGH THEM DIRECTLY
This did not seem at first to deny the doctrines of the church – okay sinasabi ng iba may
charismatic gift talaga siya – but eventually it became a problem in the Church – why?
Why do you think it became a problem…?
they say it is their new revelation… there is no such thing as new revelation. Why?
TETELESTAI. Everything is finished about our Salvation… everything that we need to
know about salvation has been laid clearly in the Bible.
and sa ating panahon –yung tinatawag na Neo Pentecostal movement… example
sasabihin ko sa inyo this coming December 31…will be then end of the world... because
the Spirit told me... punta tayo sa paanan ng bundok ng mount apo… benta nyo lahat...
ari arian nyo... at ibiagy nyo sa akin… we know this.. di ba... this is an example... why we
cannot rely on new revelation… or new prophecies...
One of the devil's most effective trick is to deceive people into believing that the Holy
Spirit speaks to them apart from God's Word. For example, some Christians are misled
to believe that the Holy Spirit speaks directly to them through their feelings. emotional
experiences, or even in visions. Of course, what God communicates to us does affect
our feelings and emotions. However, our feelings are the result, not the cause of God 's
communication to us.
THE ENTHUSIASTS
They place internal emotion as a replacement to the external Word and means of God.
THROUGHOUT THE WORLD TODAY, PEOPLE BELIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT
COMMUNICATES WITH THEM THROUGH AN INNER VOICE, OR THROUGH FEELINGS
AND EMOTIONS. WHY IS THIS BELIEF EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO FAITH AND
SALVATION?
This means they believe God works and communicates personally to the individual
rather than through Scripture and physical means. During the Reformation, Enthusiasts
included people like, Ulrich Zwingli, Andreas Karlstadt, Caspar Schwenckfeld, among
many others. So that is now very common in evangelical circles.. you have to feel God…
And even the flow of worship is designed to incite feelings and emotions… like sa
concert – ma eexcite ka.. music has that effect.. is it wrong… hindi.. BUT IT BECOMES
WRONG WHEN YOU FOCUS ON THE EMOTIONS OF THE PEOPLE INSTEAD
OFFOSCUING ON THE OBJECTIVE TRUTH OF GODS MESSAGE.
When I was younger – I was asked to pray –
You have to feel…
But what if I am sleeping… does it change the fact that God loves me.. what If I am
burdened by my sins.. does it dictate God’s attitude toward me?
So it ahs to be always objective…
sometimes sasabihin natin that Lutherans are stoic – you know unfeeling – no we don’t
say that – it is just that when it comes to God communicating to us – it ios always
objective.. it is apart from our feelings and emotions… and again we do have emotions...
when God speaks to us THROUGH THE WORD... we do have emotions... but this is the
result – not the cause…
In the Reformation --- Luther maintained, vigorously, that if you wanted to live with the
confidence that you are being led by the Spirit of God and not a spirit of the devil, you
had to remain "connected to," and "in," the living Word of God. OBJECTIVE... SOLA
SCRIPTURA…Bakit nasabi ito ni Luther? Because he saw many individuals and groups
spring up during the Reformation, claiming to be "led by the Spirit."
They claimed also to have received messages directly from the Spirit, apart from and in
addition to God's Word. Confusion, turmoil, and even death resulted. One of Luther's
contemporaries, Karlstadt, claimed that the Holy Spirit came and spoke directly to him.
But Luther’s Solas Scriptura in the Reformation refutes this…
THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
THE SCRIPTURE IS WHAT THE HOLY SPIRIT
USES TO RVEAL TO US GOD’S WILL
In His holy, living, and life-giving Word, God has provided everything necessary for your
faith and life.
He will not send His Holy Spirit to give you counsel, intuition, nor any additional
information apart from what He has revealed in His Word. "All Scripture is inspired by
God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for connection, for training! in righteousness,
that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3: 16-
17)
2 Timothy 3:16 - 17
Sometimes claim the "Spirit" has led them to make a particular decision. Yet, to say "I
was led by the Spirit" does not automatically mean you were led by God's Spirit. In His
Word, God warns His children that there is His Spirit, but there are also many other evil
spirits. Because of the existence of these evil spirits, in a time when so many people
claim to be led by the "Spirit," God desires that you daily "test the spirits to see whether
they are from God" (1 John 4:1).
1 John 4:1
This was a big issue during the time of the reformation – yung heresy ni Montanus –
Montanism came through the enthusiasts – and even in our time andito pa rin.. So it is
important to again go back to scriptures to teach us how God speaks to us… SO test the
spirits whether they are of God…
FALSE SPIRIT VS. HOLY SPIRIT
Test the Spirit.
Illustration:
Good electricity comes to you in a specific, dependable, and unchanging way-through a
wire. Harmful electricity starts fires and kills people and animals.
A spark of static electricity can cause a destructive and deadly explosion if it occurs
when a jet is being refueled.
See how often God speaks not only about His Spirit, but about many "spirits”?
Matthew 8:16; Mark 1:27; Luke 4:36; Acts 5:16; 1 Corinthians 12:10;
1 Timothy 4:1; 2 Corinthians 11:14
As you can see from this passage ---
Especially in the GSopels… paulit ulit yung nclean spirits.. and it is associated with
demons…
oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits
the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”
In corinth -- thre is a gift --
the ability to distinguish between spirits,
Paul says to the young pastor Timothy
some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings
of demons,
And Paul warns us that -- even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.
That is why we must be wary in relying on supernatural spiritual things.. remember that
the Satan is also a Spirit.. so not everything spiritual is from God….
There are numerous spirits of the devil constantly hoping to play with your feelings,
emotions, and intellect, hoping to confuse and mislead you. God warns you not to trust
or be led by just any spirit (1 John 4: 1). The devil is constantly trying to trick you by
presenting himself as the spirit of the true God. This should not surprise us since the
that the devil "disguises himself as an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11: 14 ). Dito nga sa
mundo natin – daming scammer.. sa spirit world pa kaya.. Regarding spiritual matters,
THE HOLY SPIRIT WORKS ONLY THROUGH THE WORD – Not in new revelation, not
in my opinion….
That is the reformation – emphasis – God speaks through His word. The final arbiter and
authority for faith and life – the Holy Scriptures..
SOLA SCRIPTURA
THE UNCHANGING TRUTH FOR THESE CHANGING TIMES
When God's unchanging Word guides you, your future will have less anxiety and you will
be filled with more confidence.
THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL TEACH YOU ALL THINGS
John 14:26
John 6:13
1 Corinthians 2:14
Illus: How do we see?
Do our eyes move forward or does light bring image to our eyes?
Just as air brings odors to the nose, so also light brings the image to the eye enabling us
to see.
St. Paul writes, "A natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God; for they
are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually
appraised" (1 Corinthians 2:14 ). Like an eye that cannot see until beams of light enter it,
you cannot understand the Scriptures until the Holy Spirit enables you to understand!
Through the Holy Spirit's enabling, you can confess: "I believe that Jesus Christ is the
Son of God" (Acts 8:37; 1 Corinthians 12:3).
GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT-THROUGH THE WORD FOCUSES YOUR EYES OF FAITH ON
JESUS
The Holy Spirit enlightens you to see the central message of the Bible:
that Jesus Christ died to forgive your sins and to declare you holy in God's sight.
As you read and study the Bible, the Holy Spirit illuminates your heart and mind to
understand the Scriptures. Because the Holy Spirit teaches you all things (John 14:26)
and testifies to you about Jesus (John 15 :26), you can confess with the Ethiopian: "I
believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God" (Acts 8:37).
Holy Spirit enables you to understand God's Word. You need not rely on your own
wisdom or strength to understand God's Word. Rely on the Holy Spirit instead. Just as
light makes the eye
able to see, so also shall the Holy Spirit enlighten you and teach you all things. Jesus
said, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will
teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you" (John 14:26).
THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTS YOU OF SIN
SO THAT HE MAY BRING YOU TO JESUS
John 16:8
For example, after King David committed the faith-destroying sin s of adultery and
murder (2 Samuel 11 ), the Holy Spirit condemned David. He not only used David 's
conscience (Psalm 32:3--4), but He also used the prophet Nathan to accuse David: "You
have despised [the LORD] and have taken the wife of Uri ah the Hittite to be your wife"
(2 Samuel 12:7, 10). With these words, the Holy Spirit convicted David of his guilt and
moved him to confess, "I have sinned against the Lord" (2 Samuel 12: 13). Through His
Spirit and Word, God saved David from the curse of his sin. What the Holy Spirit did for
David, He will also do for you. It is important work in preparation for the reception of
grace. The Holy Spirit pierced David 's conscience by the preaching of God's Word
through the prophet Nathan, causing David to realize and confess his sins. David was
then prepared to hear and believe God's Word of forgiveness. In the same way, the Holy
Spirit convicts you of your sin, causing you to fee l pangs of conscience as David did, "I
have sinned against the Lord" (2Samuell 2:13). But hindi lang yan ang work ng Holy
Spirit…
THE HOLY SPIRIT
WASHES AWAY YOUR SIN
Titus 3:5
1 Peter 3:21
In 1847 Austrian doctor I. P. Semmelweis noticed that doctors were inadvertently
spreading an infectious fever to mothers during childbirth As a result, many mothers
died. Semmelwe1s ordered the doctors to wash their hands with germ-killing chlorine
water before they saw their patients. In only seven months, the death rate for the
mothers dropped from over ll percent to under 3 percent. Despite his success,
Semmelweis was shunned. His recommendations rejected. and he was fi red from his
job. Today. doctors agree with the Austrian that hand
washing is the best way to prevent infections from spreading.
Just as some people rejected Dr. Semmelweis' mandate to wash hands, some people
reject how the Holy Spirit works in Baptism to save us. But God clearly teaches in His
Word that Baptism is not something that you do for God; rather THE HOLY SPIRIT
WORKS in Baptism to wash away your sins. St. Pau l says that God saved us "by the
washing of regeneration and renewing BY THE HOLY SPIRIT" (Titus 3:5).
Another facet of Baptism is that -
WHEN THE LORD WASHES YOU,
YOU ARE JOINED TO HIM!
John 13:1 – 11
Romans 6:4
1 Peter 3:21
When Jesus washed His disciples' feet (see John 13:1-11).
He actively worked while His disciples received His washing.
Peter thought that such service was beneath Jesus and said,
"Never shall you wash my feet !'' (John 13.8).
Then Jesus reminded Peter, "IF I DO NOT WASH YOU,
YOU HAVE NO PART WITH ME" (John 13 .8).
Just as Jesus washed the feet of His
disciples. He also washes you through the Holy Spirit's work in your Baptism.
When the Holy Spirit washes your sins away in Baptism, He actually gives you new life
in the forgiveness of your sins.
Baptism – is what unites us to God…. unites us to Jesus.
St. Paul tells us that –
"[You] have been buried with Him through Baptism into death, in order that as Christ was
raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so [you] too might walk in newness
of life" (Romans 6:4).
Baptism is our new birth… unless one is born in water and Spirit… you cannot enter the
kingdom of God.
God is very direct in saying that His miracle of Baptism has the power to save you,
forever! "Baptism now saves you" (1 Peter 3:21). So, baptism is not a human work... but
Pastor di ba we are obeying the command of Jesus. True! Command siya – but this is
not just an ordinary command... it is more of an invitation...
Some will say Baptism merely symbolizes God's forgiveness of their sins.
Or they say Baptism is only a ceremony in which they commit themselves to God or join
a local church. But the Scripture tells us.. that this is the means by which God the Holy
Spirit unites us to Christ….
Baptism is how You become a part of God’s family…
It’s not your decision… but it is God’s decision…
As Jesus says, "You did not choose Me but I chose you" (John 15: 16).
When you are baptized – you are also given faith..
THE HOLY SPIRIT GIVES YOU FAITH
Ephesians 2:8
This gift of faith is God's miracle, enabling you to believe that Jesus' crucifixion has
saved you personally. The Holy Spirit's work for is --- lifts you up, directs your eyes,
points you to the cross, and saves you!
Jesus is not saying to you that the Holy Spirit will give you self-help information for your
salvation or a road map that you must follow to find eternal life. Rather, Jesus declares
to you that the Holy Spirit will enlighten "the eyes of your heart" (Ephesians 1: 18),
making you able to see and believe.
And His Word is the Lamp that lightens the path that we take in this life..
Di na nasabi na natin kanina that H.S will give you Spiritual sight… And there is a
popular story in the bible...
MY EYES HAVE SEENT THY SALVATION
Luke 2:25 – 35 Story of Simeon
His name is Simeon. He happened to be present when Mary and Joseph brought 40-
day-old baby Jesus to the temple.
But something extraordinary happened that day.
Here was a man who, from everything one can read in the Bible, had never seen this
baby before. Yet, suddenly, when he took the baby Jesus into his arms, Simeon said:
"Now Lord, Thou dost let Thy bond-servant depart in peace, according to Thy word; FOR
MY EYES HAVE SEEN THY SALVATION, which Thou hast prepared in the presence of
all peoples, a light of revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Thy people Israel" (Luke
2:29-32). How was it possible, one must ask, for Simeon to recognize that this month-old
tiny baby was Jesus, the Christ, the long-promised Messiah?
Answer? See v. 25 Luke 2:25 says, "The Holy Spirit was upon him [Simeon]." In other
words, God, through His Word in the Old Testament promises of the Messiah, gave
Simeon "eyes of faith" to discern this great mystery of God.
Si Simeon – Lord I am now ready to die – now that I have seen your salvation...
Sa atin when do we usually sing this in the liturgy?
After communion… we sing this… and like Simeon we say – now we have seen your
salvation... the salvation you have prepared for me..
WE SEE OUR SALVATION IN
THE LORD’S SUPPER
1 Corinthians 2:7, 12 - 16
Just as God the Holy Spirit enabled Simeon to see that Jesus was bodily present in His
arms, so also He enables you to know that, when you receive the bread and wine in
communion, you are receiving the actual physical body and blood of Christ! Every time
Christ's real presence in the Holy Supper seems difficult to accept, always recall Jesus'
Words: "This IS My body, ... This IS My blood!" And that is why like Simeon – we sing
the Nunc Dimitis – which simply means…
Without the Holy Spirit – Simeon could not have recognized Jesus…. And without the
Holy Spirit we will not also be able to recognize the real presence of the Body and Blood
of our Lord Jesus… we can never really believe... we can never understand... why?
Because it is outside the pale of human reason…it is a mystery…but in all of God’s
mysteries – In all of God's mysteries and miracles, ask the Holy Spirit to remove all
doubt from your heart and replace it with the faith God gave St. Paul. Then join with St.
Paul in saying:
12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that
we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in words
not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those
who are spiritual.
This is what the Christian church has done for centuries. By the power of the Holy Spirit,
sing that you have seen and tasted Christ in Holy Communion. And sing your confession
of Christ with joy.
And other work of the Spirit is...
THE HOLY SPIRIT SEALS US
FOR THE DAY OF REDEMPTION
Ephesians 4:30
1 Peter 1:3
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit – by whom you were sealed for the day of Salvation..
Ano bae tongs ealing na ito… its the same as keeping.. guarding you preserving you..
sanctifying you… This "sealing" takes place at the point of salvation. Blast freeze…
Though we can bring grief to the Spirit, we cannot lose the Spirit. The Greek word
translated "sealed" is from the root word sphragizo, which means being closed up, and
marked. A classic example is the wax-pressed symbol applied to a letter. This implies
both security and identification. We are marked by the Holy Spirit in anticipation of the
day when we meet with Christ.
GOD SEALS YOU TO A LIVING HOPE
One day Jesus took His disciples on a boat across the Sea of Galilee (Mark 4:35-41).
While Jesus was sleeping, a fierce storm arose, and the disciples feared for their lives.
Jesus awoke and comforted His disciples by calming the storm, but then He said, "Why
are you so timid? How is it that you have no faith?" (Mark4:40). Even though the
disciples doubted and feared for their lives, Jesus remained faithful and protected them
in the boat. Because Jesus was in the boat with them, the disciples were as safe and
secure as Noah was in the ark. In your Baptism, God "has caused [you] to be born again
TO A LIVING HOPE through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Peter
1 :3). God now promises you an eternal inheritance that "is imperishable and undefiled
and WILL NOT FADE AWAY, RESERVED IN HEAVEN
FOR YOU" (1 Peter 1 :4). Through this Word of promise, the Holy Spirit seals and
preserves you for the day of your final redemption.
My pledge of love cannot be broken..
Therefore, no matter how you may feel on a given day, you can live each hour with the
blessed assurance that you are forgiven by the blood of Jesus and assigned an
inheritance in the mansions of heaven (1 Peter 1 :4 ). And sure there will be problems in
life…
But the Holy Spirit also keeps us.. preserves us… in the One true faith..
THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL INTERCEDE FOR YOU
Romans 15:13
Romans 8:18 – 20
Romans 8:26
Philippians 1:21
In this life – saya at lungkot yun lang.. we are born and we die… sab inga ni Qohelet
everything is vanity – meaningless.. Simply stated, Qohelet’s message is this: “Life is
hard and then you die.” He has tried to find the meaning of life in wisdom, pleasure,
work, wealth, status, and relationships and has come up empty. --- and indeed, it is
true… but we must read Ecclesiastes considering the New Testament…
But St. Paul tells us…
I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be
revealed in us. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be
revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the
will of the one who subjected it. (Rom. 8:18–20)
Philipiians 1:21 – For me to live is Christ and die is gain… and this is where we
understand the perspective in life….we are but straners here and heaven is our home…
There may be times in your life when you feel emotionally "shipwrecked" with no hope
on the horizon. The apostle Paul agrees that life can become so discouraging and even
full of despair that "we do not know how to pray" (Romans 8:26). Family relationships
become strained; marriage relationships seem only to get worse; and long-time friends
desert you. In the midst of
these difficulties, you have no one to tum to and no one who truly understands your
situation.
DON'T DESPAIR
In these shipwreck-like situations, when "you do not know how to pray," the good news
is that your heavenly Father promises that "the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with
groanings too deep for words" (Romans 8:26).
3RD ARTICLE OF THE APOSTLE’S CREED
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or
come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His
gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers,
enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus
Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church, He daily and richly forgives all my
sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day, He will raise me and all the dead, and
give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true
Luther was unwavering that the Trinity- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-speaks only through
the Word. He speaks of the Holy Spirit calling me and gathering the Church, but
enlightening, sanctifying, keeping, forgiving, and raising up all of us together. The Holy
Spirit speaks through the Word.
Was this for doctrinal purity only?
No! Then why do Lutheran Christians take such a strong position on this? Because if the
members of the Trinity were to speak in other ways through your changing feelings,
vacillating emotions, or uncertain intuition- you could never be sure of God's forgiveness,
His compassion, and His wonderful love for you despite your sins.
