1. Describe what you think your main duties will be in this classroom.

I think that my main duties in the classroom will be to assist 1st-grade students with their

learning. I will be assisting students with their grammar and spelling. I think that I will help

students to begin learning about math and basic equations.

2. Describe your first impressions of the students and what their particular needs will be

( any special needs?)

My first impression of the class is that the students were really quiet and quick to transition to the

different tasks in class. There was one student who have autism spectrum. They need assisting

and helping them to get started on tasks in class. There were some students who needed help

with transiting through the different tasks. Students sit quietly at their desks working on their

daily math problems. My first impression of the school is that the students were very quiet as

they walked around the hallway getting to their classroom and the places that they needed to go.

All the students stay on task as they interact with other students.

3. Have you had a chance to meet with the teacher one-on-one? Do you have a plan for

communicating with him or her on a regular basis?

Yes, I have a plan for communicating with the teacher one-on-one in the classroom as I have

questions and by email. The teacher had told me that if I have any questions at any time during

the class she could help address my questions.

4. Have you introduced yourself to people in the office?

Yes, I have introduced myself to the people in the office. I have introduced to them that I am a

volunteer and will be volunteering for Ms. Deniston’s 1st-grade class. I have introduced myself

to the people in the office. I had introduced to the ladies in the office that my purpose in coming

to Vestal school is to volunteer at Ms. Deniston’s 1st-grade classroom.

5. What are some of your initial fears and concerns about this practicum?

I am concerned that I won’t be able to meet the needs of each individual student due to my lack

of interaction with students and knowledge. I have experienced volunteering with younger

children before as a reading buddy for kindergarteners when I was in fifth grade and with first

graders when I was in seventh grade at Vestal. The memories of my volunteer experience during

that time are very vague. I have few memories of the experience.
