On the day on which I had volunteered many things had happened. The day went by
quickly, but the students had gotten to learn many great new materials. My task for the day
involves helping and teaching students new skills such as helping them to associate the different
word parts of a word and writing the new words down on a worksheet. I found that students were
well-behaved and good listeners. There were some outbursts from students as Mrs. Deniston was
I observed the fifth-graders read to the class. The students were well behaved. They
listened attentively to the fifth graders reading. The students were able to listen attentively
because they enjoyed listening to the story that was read to them. Students then sat on the rug
and wrote the new words that Mrs. Deniston tells students to spell. Students say the words and
write the words down on their board. I had observed that the students were listening attentively
as Mrs. Deniston gave students lessons on using quotation marks, apostrophes, and commas.
Mrs. Deniston says a word for students to write on their board. I help students to learn about
quotation marks. I found that it is hard and tricky to work with one particular student. He
sometimes gets out of his seat and does not cooperate with the tasks that I tell him to do.
I observed Mrs. Deniston teaching students to break down words into parts; root, base
word, and suffixes. She tells students to change the beginning letters of each word with a new
letter modeling each word on hand and the change of letters. I then observe students learning
about veterans for Veterans Day by reading a little book titled “Sky-High Veterans.” The
I observe the students have their snacks and do their reading, Mrs. Deniston, James (a
teacher aid), and myself, helping students with their reading. I help 3 students individually with a
reading activity. Students' task was first to cut out the words and pictures from a worksheet. The
students then read the words out loud and then match the words with the corresponding pictures.
The students then match the words and the pictures with the correct suffixes. Students place the
pictures on top and the words on the bottom gluing each onto the worksheet. Students make an
association between the suffixes and the words along with the pictures. I observed Mrs. Deniston
showing the pictures of each day of the week to the students telling and showing them how many
days have gone by in November. She also tells students and shows them that there’s a pattern
My task of the day involves helping students to associate between words that are made up
of two words put together to make a new word. I helped a student with their reading of the book
titled “Patterns.” I passed out to students with a Handwriting Book. My task for this activity was
to help students with their handwriting. Writing words correctly, teaching students the use of
capital letters and lowercase letters. I also help them to understand the association between the
two and correct students' work. I then help students with writing numbers on a worksheet. While
Mrs. Deniston read to the class while I helped 3 students write their letters with the rest of the
The instructional strategy that I could improve on is explaining the tasks and problems to
the student in a way that they can comprehend. I can explain the problem of the worksheet to the
students which were for them to find the compound and not compound words. They need to
understand the association between the two kinds of words and match the words that they see to
I believe that my interaction with students was great. I believe that my interaction helps
them to understand their tasks in the best way that I can. I just want to find ways in which I can
better explain the task to students. I am not great at explaining and giving explanations in a way
that students understand. I believe that my interactions with the teacher, Mrs. Deniston is great. I
tend to rely on her for guidance on how to teach students in a way to supports their learning. My
interactions with other assistants in class are great. I tend to go to them for guidance since they
I was to keep interactions with students positive and confidential. I found that all students
need someone with who they can come to and share their thoughts without having the fear of
being judged. I was able to adapt instructions and interactions to the students' disabilities. All
students have their skills and abilities in their learning. I tend to ask clarifying questions to
understand students' viewpoints on their learning and assist students further in their learning.
