ADJECTIVE An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun. ‘The yellow sunflower looked beautiful. (The word yellow describes the sunflower which is the noun) Kinds of Adjective i. Adjectives of Quality These adjectives are used to describe the nature of a noun. They give an idea about the characteristies of the noun by answering the question ‘what kind”. i, Adjectives of Quantity, These adjectives help to show the amount or the approximate amount oF the nouit or pronoun. These adjectives do not provide exact numbers; rather they tell us the amount of the noun in relative or whole terms, All, Half, Many, Few, Little, No, Enough, Great etc Adjectives of Number These adjectives are used to show the number ofnouns and their place in an order One, two, three, first, second, third ete. iv. Demonstrative Adjectives ‘These adjectives are used to point out or indicate a particular noun or pronoun using the adjectives — This, That, These and Those. Y. Lnterrogative Adjectives These adjectives are used to ask questions about nouns or in relation to nouns, they are ~ Where, What, Which and Whose, How to order adjectives in English Generally, the adjective order in English is: 1. Correet: English is the easiest of all the languages taught in the school Rule Iftwo qualities are to be compared of the same person or thing then we don’t use the comparative degree. Comparative degree is used for comparison between two different things or persons. Instead of using the comparative degree more and positive degree will be used. Example: Incorreet: Kamran is Juekler than hardworking, Correet: Kamran is more lucky than hardworking (Two qualities of is Kamran are being compared (his luck and his hard work).So comparative degree can’t be used.) Rule 4: Than adjective is to be used between “as, as” and “So. as” the adjective should be in positive degree. ‘As...atts is used to show that something is equally good or bad. Example: Incorrect: Karachi is 30 hot as Multan in May, Correet: Karachi is as hot as Multan in May. So. s is used to show something is not as good or as bi Example: Incorrect: Sargodha is not as developed as Lahore. Correet: Sargodha is not so developed as Lahore. Not his rule is also applicable in adverbs. Example: Salma danced as gracefully as Liza Rule S: Article ‘the’ is used before superlative degree as it becomes definite. Example: Incorrect: Lahore is a most polluted eity of Punjab. Correct: Lahore is the most polluted city of Punjab. Rule Incorrect: Tahir is taller than any boy inthe class, Correet: Tahir is taller than any other boy in the class. In both these sentences we are comparing Tahir to any boy in the class but one at a time. In suet sentences where we wish to state that someone or something is better or worse than the rest but is to be taken one at a time any other will be used. Example: Incorreet: Maths is more interesting than amy subject. Correet: Matis is more interesting than any other subject. Incorrect: January is colder than any month of the year. Correct: January is colder than any other month of the year Rule In comparative degree than is used, But for adjeetives ending in “ior” than is not used, instead “to” is used List of such adjectives- Superior, inferior, junior, senior, pri anterior, posterior, exterior, interior ete. Example: Incorrect: He was junior than 1 in college. Correet: He was junior to me in college. Rule Certain adjectives can’t be used in comparative and superlative degree, Example: Ineorreet: Your presentation was more perfect. Incorrect: His presentation was the most perfect. Correct: The presentation was perfect, The first two sentences are incorrect as Perfect means flawless, When we are already saying something is perfect it means it is Hawless so more perfect and most perfect can’t be used. List of such words that can’t be used in comparative and superlative degree are Supreme,impossible,absolute,ideal,everlasting.eternal.trian gular, square, round, major, minor, complete, entire, chief, extreme, excellent, minor, ulterior, universal, unique ,last and final Example: Incorreet: Darjeeling tea is the most superior tea in India, Correet: Darjecling tea is superior to any other tea grown in India. Rule Iftwo adjectives are being used forthe same noun or pronoun, the adjective should be in the same degree, (parallel structure) Example: Incorreet: Pakistan is the greatest and tolerant country. Correct: Pakistan is a great and tolerant country Rule 10: For directions and some other adjectives there is positive and superlative degree only. There is no comparative degree POSITIVE DEGREE SUPERLATIVE DEGREE 1. Top topmost 2 Centre centre most 3. Right rightmost 4. Bottom bottommost 5. Northern northernmost Rule 1: ‘The same word can be an adjective in a sentence and a noun in another sentence. For certain words that are mostly used as nouns if they are used as an adjective in a sentence they can’t be used in the plural form Example: ‘The table cloth was washed, ironed and spread on the table. Table is a noun but here it is used as an adjective, So tables can’t be used but table will be used Rule 12: ‘There are certain adjectives, if we use ‘the’ before them they will become plural common noun In such sentences the verb will be plural Example: Rich people fecl the law can be tured and twisted. Example: He proved it right It becomes hot after sunrise Rule 15: An ordinal number is an adjective that denotes what place an object has in a certain order. (First, second, third, fourth.) Cardinal number tells us about the number of things. (One, two, three ,four, five...) Little ~ A little ~ The little Like ‘few’ and ‘a few", ‘the few’, ‘little’, ‘a little’ and ‘the little" represent negative, positive or all quantities. Always use a little with non-countable nouns. Example: Incorreet: There is litle sauce left for you to eat with the bread, Correet: There is alittle sauce left for you to eat with the bread Incorrect: He has been studying this topic for the last three days bur there isa Tittle improvement Correet: He has becn studying this topic for the last three days but there is litte improvement. Incorreet: There is a little hope of his survival as his head was nearly erushed in the accident, Correet: There is little hope of his survival as his head was nearly crushed in the accident. © Farther — Further “Farther” (root word far) is always used for distance, and further (think furthermore) means advancement. Incorrect: Farther topies will be covered next week Correet: Further tepies will be covered next week. ¢ Last—Latter- Latest Last is the opposite of first, the latter is the opposite of the former and the latest means the most recent.
