Providing De-fluoride drinking water to ten villages in

Project Title: Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar district
10 villages each of Nalgonda and Kollur Mandals
Target Area (Better to include names of villages)
Serious problems are faced in several parts of Nalgonda
Project Overview &
and Mahabubnagar districts in Andhra Pradesh, due to the
presence of high concentration of fluoride in drinking water
which causes dental and skeletal fluorosis to humans.
Nalgonda is the worst affected districts with a presence of
excess fluoride in ground water in the state of Andhra
Pradesh.
There are 59 mandals with 1175 Gram panchayats and about
3100 habitations in the district. The District is totally agrarian
with rain fed agriculture with only about 10% irrigation under
canals. Weathering of rocks and evaporation of groundwater
Problem Statement: are responsible for high fluoride concentration in groundwater
of this area apart from anthropogenic activities including
irrigation, which accelerates weathering of rocks. As per 1992
survey about 1122 habitations in the district were fluoride
affected. The latest survey conducted in 2009 indicates about
643 habitations as fluoride affected habitations. Mandal wise
fluoride affected habitations are presented in the table below.
 Providing de-fluoride treated drinking water to the target
Objectives of the Project group
 Using cost-effective methods for water treatment
 Make treated water available at a very low cost to the target
group
 To eradicate fluoride water related health issues from the
target villages
 To help and encourage disabled-free second generation in
the target villages.
 Filtration method is used for water treatment
Method to be used  The process needs a tank to collect raw-unpurified ground
water pumped into, Filters Candles for processing and a
steal coated tank for storage of treated water.
 Bore-wells and pipelines, if necessary

 The maintenance cost will be generated by BSK by

Success and sustainability of the project:
way of selling the treated water as low as Rs.10 (euro
0.6) per 20 liters.

 The filters will be maintained free of cost for one year

by the manufacturing company.

 The treated water will be sold to the local house-

holds @ 10/- per 20 litrs. (A rough estimate of profit
could be: 225 houses in a village x Rs 10 per day +
weekly 40 liters of consumption per house hold
=Rs.4500 per week x 4 weeks = Rs. 18000/- per
month)

Rs. 3000/- per month to be reserved for maintenance

of the plant and Rs 6000/- towards site coordinator’s
honorarium. Thus BSK will earn a revenue income of
Rs. 9000/- per month -> 9000 x 12 =108000 per yr.

Every 2 years, BSK will install new plant in a new

village

After the installation of the second plant, BSK will be

able to install new water purification plant every year
since the income from the both the plant will be
sufficient.
