Warming Up
Compare love songs of the 80s with those which are popularized in the 2000s. You
may specify a song from the 80s and another from today’s generation Using the Venn
diagram, identify their common and unique features like:
1. The message of the songs
2. For whom are these songs dedicated to
3. The language used
4. Your personal point of views about the two songs

Write your answers in the Venn Diagram

1980's Songs 2000s song

From your answers in the Venn Diagram, what realizations can you derive from
the activity? Which music era do you think has a more meaningful way of
communicating its message? Why did you say so? Perhaps your answers would vary.
This variation would entail that men have different principles about their typical songs.
Whatever that may be, recognizing such principles is essential. Since songs are
communication platforms just like the usual conversation to a friend, a songwriter
considers principles about how he should communicate to his listeners.
Answer: - For me, 80's songs has the more meaningful way of communicating
it's message. As what I've noticed , songs nowadays are meaningless, rude, and hard
to understand. Unlike, the old songs, those are better because it has a good beat,
meaningful , and catchy which isn't present on today's music. The songs back then,
has something that everyone can relate to , and detailed so the listeners could easily
understand the song.

Applying your Learning

Plan making a two-stanza poem. In your planning, consider the principles of
communication discussed in this lesson
5
Principles Your considerations
Knowing your audience I consider this in making a poem because it guides and
help us determine what is appropriate and what to
consider and it provides an understanding of what going to
either appeal to or to catch the attention of the audience

Knowing your purpose It is important to know the purpose in making a poem

because it helps to determine what strategy needed.

Knowing your topic Knowing the topic before making a poem can help us
focus our mind into a specific topic.

Anticipating objections By anticipating objections is a way to show the readers

that we consider their concern and to show them that we
get it and we are making an effort to see their view points
and objections to avoid misunderstanding.

Achieving credibility with I consider this because when there is a credibility , my

your audience readers will come to trust what I've just written because it it
lacks credibility , it weakens the effectiveness of my poem
and even my personal credibility.

Presenting information In making a poem , it is important to do it in a creative and

in various ways effective way where the audience can relate to it, and
where we can capture the hearts of the audiences.

Acknowledging To finally have an effective communication, we should

communication barriers also consider to overcome barriers for us to convey a clear
and concise message.

Establishing links
From the lists of your likes and dislikes about your identified speaker, why did
you arrive at such impressions? Are there more likes over the dislikes? Or the other
way around? Is the speaker admirable in general or not?
Perhaps the comments or impressions you gave to the speaker tells about how good
or bad he is as a communicator. Being good or bad to a certain degree may entail
something about the nature of ethics. And, in this issue of communication, ethics is but
a powerful agent for one to be called an effective communicator.
Answer: The speaker is still admirable because of being such a hardworking person,
and a man of courage, perseverance , and faith. He is a passionate philantrophist
committed to organizations violence agianst women , homelessness, financial
illiteracy , and providing access to medical care and treatment , thats the thing that I
like about him , because he focuses on the issues in real life situations and it
motivates a lot of people to continue life despite of the difficulties we are facing.

Worksheet 1 for Lesson 2: The Impact of Communication in Society and the World
Note: All answers are to be written here. Do not write anything on the handout. Thank
you!

Warming Up
In a sentence or two, explain why communicating in a multi-cultural setting is inevitable
in the following:

1. Globalization
Globalization has made intercultural communication inevitable. Communicating
with other cultures characterizes today's business, classroom, and community.
Technology especially the internet has increased the probability that whatever is
documented online will be read by someone from another culture.

Business opportunities
Economically, globalization involves goods, services, data, technology, and the
economic resources of capital.[1] The expansion of global markets liberalizes the
economic activities of the exchange of goods and funds. Removal of cross-
border trade barriers has made the formation of global markets more feasible.
[2]
Advances in transportation, like the steam locomotive, steamship, jet engine,
and container ships, and developments in telecommunication infrastructure, like
the telegraph, Internet, and mobile phones, have been major factors in
globalization and have generated further interdependence of economic and
cultural activities around the globe.
______________________________________________________________
Job opportunities
In 2000, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) identified four basic aspects of
globalization: trade
and transactions, capital and investment movements, migration and movement

12
of people, and the dissemination of knowledge.[9] Globalizing processes affect
and are affected by business and work organization, economics, sociocultural
resources, and the natural environment. Academic literature commonly divides
globalization into three major areas: economic globalization, cultural
globalization, and political globalization
______________________________________________________________
Sharing of views and ideas
Cultural globalization refers to the transmission of ideas, meanings, and values
around the world in such a way as to extend and intensify social relations.
[69]
This process is marked by the common consumption of cultures that have
been diffused by the Internet, popular culture media, and international travel.
This has added to processes of commodity exchange and colonization which
have a longer history of carrying cultural meaning around the globe. The
circulation of cultures enables individuals to partake in extended social relations
that cross national and regional borders.

and positive environment for them to feel comfortable. And when the communication is
present and effective, there are no doors for misunderstanding informations which
sometimes can cause to have a conflict. It ensures that it does not only convey a

Worksheet 1 for Lesson 3: Characteristics of Competent Global Communicator

Note: All answers are to be written here. Do not write anything on the handout. Thank
you!

Warming Up
Read journals or search the internet for techniques on becoming a competent global
communicator. From what you had read/searched, answer the following questions
and put your answers on your worksheet.

1. What where the competences mentioned?

- Self-awareness , Adaptibility, Empathy, Cognitive, Ethics

2. Are you familiar with all the stated competencies? If yes, why. If no, why.
- Yes, some of the competencies mentioned above has been discussed by our teacher
during my highschool days.

3. Do you think it would be of great help if you get to know the competencies?
Explain your answer.
- Yes , with this I will be more aware of my own communication behavior and enable to
acquire knowledge and skills in the various desciplines , and to develop individuals into
intellectual, social, and civic beings to the benefit of the society .

4. What do you think is the best of all the stated competencies? Why do you
think so?
- I think the best competency among 5 competencies that have been mentioned is the
Ethics, because in here, we don't take advantage of the weakness state of the person
just for them to agree to something that she /he otherwise would not likely to have done.
These is being aware of the consequences of the behavior, because if we value other
people's thought, there will be no misunderstanding. It's to respect other points of view
and tolerate disagreement.

5. If you were to add another competency what would it be and why?

15
- if I were to add another competency , it would be appropriateness . A competent
communicator would understand and communicate appropriately in the situation. They
would know when it's appropriate to use slang and to use formal vocabulary. This is too
far from Adaptibility because in order to adapt appropriately, you would need to
understand what is appropriate .

Establishing links
From your responses on the preceding activity, what was your realization as a
purposive communication student?
ANSWER: - As a purposive communication student I realized how important
communication is in our lives especially to connect people and to make relationship with
them. This serves as a bridge which connects every people to understand and listen to
their thoughts and perception. Through this, it solve our problems, there are no
misunderstanding, though sometimes to there are barriers that is why we misinterpret
someone. But when we communicate effectively , there will no be conflict among people

Applying your Learning

On the blank column provided, write how you could develop the specific
characteristics needed in being a globally competitive communicator. Write your
answers on this worksheet.
1. Tolerance during - You could develop this by becoming a risk taker, honing
uncertainty yourself to do things out of your comfort zone and being
flexible at all times whatever the problem or struggle may
be.

2. Contemplative You can do this by not focusing too much on what you
can see on the outside, try to take a deeper meaning or
understanding on things. Like for example when people
seems to be judging you and saying bad things at you,
instead of fighting back just stay still, ignore them and
use those hurtful words or experiences as a motivation.
Doing this you're not only helping yourself become calm
and relaxed but you're also helping yourself be
unbothered and refocus yourself on what you really
matters.

3. Sensitive You could develop this by controlling emotions and do

not take things personally

4. Adaptable When it comes to being adaptable, you should be able to

show flexibility and strength. Being adaptablemeans you
have to go through somethings which may seem like you
aren't used to,but at the end you try to understand how to
improve yourself or situation, know yourself and try to
overcome the problem in order to adapt to these sudden
changes and use them as away to evolve or become
better.

16
5. Polite Being polite, you have to be respectful, obedient and
kind to every single person. Also you must get rid of
anger, impatience, hate and boastfulness inside your
body.

6. Avoids negative Avoid negativing question can also be known as

questions becoming an overthinker. In order to be good at handling
these things, you should try to believe in yourself more, in
your own worth and abilities. Because if you're the one
who lacks trust and pities yourself a lot, it gets easy for
people to get inside your head (criticisms) and manipulate
you into having negative thoughts and vibes around you.

7. Supportive Being supportive is quite easy, unless you are a person

who has a lot of insecurities, thinks like your superior than
others and feels like everyone is a competition. Because
being supportive means you want what's best for these
people/person and you try to help them believe in
themselves and want them to be happy because you truly
respect, love them and care for them. But if you don't
want these for them, then you're probably insecure and
don't want to see them strive and win.

8. Unbiased or - You can be good at these once you stop judging people
unprejudiced from the first look and try to get to know them first before
you say your final say about them. Because like everyone
says you can't really judge a book by its cover. So try to
be more understanding first and compassionate to these
type of people, because you might never know you might
hate them now but at the end you'll suddenly realize you
are both similar to each other.

9. Observant You could develop this by paying attention to what is

going around you but carefully filter out anything that
doesn't seem relevant.

10. Does not use slang Slang means words that came from the street and are
considered informal words or language. Instead of using
slang words, use words that are for educated people and
are considered formal because people actually consider
this as disrespectful and inappropriate especially if you
use this in school or workplace.

11. Watches the humor We all know jokes are meant to be funny, so before
saying jokes you must think first if it'll be funny or it'll be
hurtful for them. Because not everyone have humor,
some people take words seriously.

17
12. Maintains etiquette Be yourself and allow others to treat you with respect,
say “Thank You”, give genuine compliments, don't be
boastful, arrogant or loud, listen before speaking, speak
with kindness and caution, do not criticize or complain, be
punctual

Evaluating your Learning

Promote the importance of a competent global communicator by coming up with a
media advocacy on how to prevent the deadly pandemic COVID-19 which apparently
had lost lots of precious lives around the world recently and still have no cure. Media
advocacy is rooted in community advocacy and has its goal to promote healthy public
policies (Wallack, 1994). Draft your media advocacy in the box below (Worksheet is
provided so you could write your draft on it.) Then, upload the final and digital copy
on your Facebook account to encourage everyone and help keep people safe
through preventing the spread of the virus.

there are no body language or vocal emphasis that sometimes can be a distraction
from a speaker unlike in verbal communication ,most writers are unable speak plain
words or unable to find good ideas. Speakers tend to fail when using this method
because of the fear , and in here there is no undo and no revision .

how a person has been taught or exposed to the language. Also, geographical issues
contribute to how English has become for the people in the area. True enough, there
is no correct nor perfect English. That is the idea of the World Englishes came to

USA; the pictures on the bottom are from the Black Lives Matter protests on the
same country.

Fuhkology

• What can you say about the kind of protest these people are doing?

25
Answer: - The picture above literally shows people who's still demanding their rights
during pandemic. That " i want haircut" in a poster, has been a roiling topic or
conversation since corona virus lockdowns first went into place across the country .
When this virus started to scattered, the salons , restaurants , churches and even
schools had been closed which caused for many to struggle and lost their job . And
the picture below shows discrimination and inequality experienced by black people to
highlight racism.

• Why do they protest?

Answer: - They protest for equality and gain their rights. They want an action to
address unequal treatment and oppression that goes all the way back to the era of
slavery.

• Is protesting a good idea to be heard by the concerned individuals?

Answer: - Yes, protest is an event or action where people gather within others to
publicly express their feelings and opinions about something that is happening in
society. Within this, it can provide inspiration and a sense of being part of a larger
movement. It would be much easier for the protester to be heard and can scare
authorities into changing their behavior and finally listen to their concern . Isn't just
about yelling and holding signs , but also to inspire change and influence your
community.

• In your point of view, how should a protest be ideally done?

Answer: Protest can happen anywhere, but for it to be more catchy, you should
arrange your protest where it can be seen by as many as many people as possible. If
you are about to protest a law or policy , let the people responsible know your
complaint and give them the chance to respond and be vocal, learn to create some
chants , so that everyone knows what you're protesting adn why.

would you like to share to the nation and to the world during these times.

Evaluation is forward looking. It helps an organization learn how to improve

future performance. It reduces uncertainties, improves effectiveness and
enhances decision-making.It is important to critically evaluate images you
use for research, study, and presentations. Images should be evaluated like
any other source, such as journal articles or books, to determine their
quality, reliability, and appropriateness. Images should be evaluated on
several levels.

3. Describe the main character and his /her personalities? How did his/her
traits make an impact in the story?
Answer: - Lee Jung Jae plays the kind- hearted gambling addict, Swing Gi-Hun, who
winds up joing the high stakes game . He soon won our hearts as by his empathy for
the other money-hungry participants . There's no denying that Lee Jung Jae's
character is the protagonist of squid game , this is his story , and them man's good
nature and moral standing make him incredibly easy to root for.

4. What is the conflict in the story?

Answer: - This is the battle between egoism( where self-interest dictates moral
decision making) and some form of collaboration / altruism represents the crux not
only of the games themselves where one must first decide if the game is competitive
or cooperative but also inner conflict of each player. The irony is that they choses to
betray and show selfishness to finish the game rather that helping each other . The
character of the game shows us we can sacrifice everything even the life of a person
just for money and for our own gain.

5. What is your comment about the film’s visual effects? Did the visual
effects add life to the story?

inhumanity. My review about this video is that, it is well directed , well performed a
superb acting performances heighten drama, specifically from Lee, who makes Gi-
Hun irresistible, likable despite his many flaws. All of the characters undergo

believable emotions in an unbelievable setting.

Applying your Understanding

Listen to the song “Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel. In your worksheet,
answer the following comprehension questions:
1. What was the song about?
Answer: - This song is all about the inability of people to communicate with each
other.

2. What message is the song trying to convey?

Answer: - The author tries to warn the people in his dream and his listeners about the
danger of incommunicability. The incapability to share feelings, ideas and also means
that we became desentized to the evil around us, as wer are no longer able to raise
our cruelty and injustice. No one dares to disturb silence , whichi means nobody has
the courage or the strength to speak out. Silence is not as something as positive or
peaceful, but as an enemy that must be fought in order to get rid of our moral
numbness and regain some sort of unity and togetherness.

3. What line from the song struck you the most?

Answer: The third line, this line in which many of us can relate into. Because
sometimes, people talk to each other just for the sake of it, without really
31
communicating . Talking without speaking and hearing without listening, sounds like
an oxymoral, where people will listen to you but no one bother to understand you.

4. Draw an image that would relate to the message of the song.

Description:
EVERY LIFE COUNTS

- Life is uncertain and full of change , a natural occurrence of time. In just a blink of an
eye anything can happen . Everything that we have now, will also vanish. I believe
that the unknown future is a mystery being solved which is passing second. I believe
that every second is a piece of a whole , with joy, anger , love , sorrow peace and
fear and passion that piece together to form life . And I believe that life is only as
meaningful as the seconds of which is composed . Nothing is permanent , hence
there are reasons to stay in dejection. There must be ups and downs , but it will just
come and pass . Above all , every person must be optimistic no matter how bad
things get. Every failure builds experience , and this experiences is what improves the
skill and effeciency of humans. The uncertainty is what makes life precious, no one
knows our time, but probably the most important thing is that, we should live our life
to the fullest and stop stressing ourselves , and not worrying about the future.

Covid 19 pandemic has affected all levels of education system. Educational
institutions around the world(in 192 countries) have either closed or implemented
localized closures affecting about 1.7 billion or students worldwide. Many universities
around the world eitheir postponed or cancelled all campus activities to minimize

In the face of the global COVID 19 pandemic, schools have confronted
unprecedented challenges as they moved quickly shift classes to an online format,
provide equitable access for all the students, support teachers and students
educational need, and make plans amidst great uncertainties. The pandemic itself
has caused much worry, pain, stress, and grief. Some teachers may not be meeting
with students in person, some teachers may not have the same students drop-ins .
Some teachers may not be able to read to read students masked faces . As such
teachers may wonder how students are doing or the degree to which they are
struggling , particularly with respect to emotional problems. This form of learning
provides an alternative way to minimize either the contact between the students
themselves or between the students and lecturers. However, many students like me
have no access to online teaching due to lack of either the means or the instruments
due to economical and digital divide
But despite of this pandemic, let us not continuing our life, and continue persuing
our dreams no matter how hard it could be, always remember that we could get

COLLEGE LIFE
College life is very different from what we used too, it can be a lot more fun, but it's
also more demanding. You'll have a lot more flexibility with your classes , but alot
more responsibility as well.
In college there's a lot more opportunity to hangout and get involved in social
events but there's also a lot more to distractions to neglect your studies. In
highschool, you had to study hard to get good grades and to be on the list of honor
students while in college you have to learn to study smart . As a college student, we
commonly experience stress because of increased responsibilities, lack of good time
management, and you will not be able to take enough breaks for self-care. Especially
nowadays , schooling might be hard for some because of this pandemic. Aside from
the lack of materials needed in school, no internet connection, no gadgets to use for
online learning ,complying before deadlines, it was also hard for us to understand a
single topic without any discussion. And this is the reason why some of the students
are dropping out, finding a job to earn some income , and even cases of students
who committed suiside are getting rampant
College life maybe hard, but always remember your purpose. If sometimes things
would come that is not according to your will , always trust God's will and if
sometimes you may find it hard, try to take some time to rest , but never ever think of
giving up. Even though some of us are heading off to college , and continuing our
lives as a students, we must begin to think about our future because college is an
opportunity toward our goals and gain the education necessary to reach our dreams.
Everything you choose to do is a step toward your future and will become a part of
who you are So when choosing your future path , why not choose the path that will
bring you a sense of purpose , fulfillment, pride and most importantly, joy.

Compare your entries from the two conversations. Do they differ or are they quite

to us we tend to use informal communication and the less respect we have for them.
The way you communicate with someone involves a lot of factors to consider (eg.
relationship, age gap, etc.). When you communicate with someone in the workplace,
you take into account his or her position in the company, your level of intimacy, and
the subject of your conversation. Usually, you maintain a level of respect and
