From your answers in the Venn Diagram, what realizations can you derive from
the activity? Which music era do you think has a more meaningful way of
communicating its message? Why did you say so? Perhaps your answers would vary.
This variation would entail that men have different principles about their typical songs.
Whatever that may be, recognizing such principles is essential. Since songs are
communication platforms just like the usual conversation to a friend, a songwriter
considers principles about how he should communicate to his listeners.
Answer: - For me, 80's songs has the more meaningful way of communicating
it's message. As what I've noticed , songs nowadays are meaningless, rude, and hard
to understand. Unlike, the old songs, those are better because it has a good beat,
meaningful , and catchy which isn't present on today's music. The songs back then,

From the lists of your likes and dislikes about your identified speaker, why did
you arrive at such impressions? Are there more likes over the dislikes? Or the other
way around? Is the speaker admirable in general or not?
Perhaps the comments or impressions you gave to the speaker tells about how good
or bad he is as a communicator. Being good or bad to a certain degree may entail
something about the nature of ethics. And, in this issue of communication, ethics is but
a powerful agent for one to be called an effective communicator.
Answer: The speaker is still admirable because of being such a hardworking person,
and a man of courage, perseverance , and faith. He is a passionate philantrophist
committed to organizations violence agianst women , homelessness, financial
illiteracy , and providing access to medical care and treatment , thats the thing that I

In a sentence or two, explain why communicating in a multi-cultural setting is inevitable
in the following:
1. Globalization
Globalization has made intercultural communication inevitable. Communicating
with other cultures characterizes today's business, classroom, and community.
Technology especially the internet has increased the probability that whatever is
documented online will be read by someone from another culture.
Business opportunities
Economically, globalization involves goods, services, data, technology, and the
economic resources of capital.[1] The expansion of global markets liberalizes the
economic activities of the exchange of goods and funds. Removal of cross-
border trade barriers has made the formation of global markets more feasible.
[2]
Advances in transportation, like the steam locomotive, steamship, jet engine,
and container ships, and developments in telecommunication infrastructure, like
the telegraph, Internet, and mobile phones, have been major factors in
globalization and have generated further interdependence of economic and
cultural activities around the globe.
______________________________________________________________
Job opportunities
In 2000, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) identified four basic aspects of
globalization: trade
and transactions, capital and investment movements, migration and movement
12
of people, and the dissemination of knowledge.[9] Globalizing processes affect
and are affected by business and work organization, economics, sociocultural
resources, and the natural environment. Academic literature commonly divides
globalization into three major areas: economic globalization, cultural
globalization, and political globalization
______________________________________________________________
Sharing of views and ideas
Cultural globalization refers to the transmission of ideas, meanings, and values
around the world in such a way as to extend and intensify social relations.
[69]
This process is marked by the common consumption of cultures that have
been diffused by the Internet, popular culture media, and international travel.
This has added to processes of commodity exchange and colonization which
have a longer history of carrying cultural meaning around the globe. The
circulation of cultures enables individuals to partake in extended social relations
that cross national and regional borders.

Read journals or search the internet for techniques on becoming a competent global
communicator. From what you had read/searched, answer the following questions
and put your answers on your worksheet.
2. Are you familiar with all the stated competencies? If yes, why. If no, why.
- Yes, some of the competencies mentioned above has been discussed by our teacher
during my highschool days.
3. Do you think it would be of great help if you get to know the competencies?
Explain your answer.
- Yes , with this I will be more aware of my own communication behavior and enable to
acquire knowledge and skills in the various desciplines , and to develop individuals into
intellectual, social, and civic beings to the benefit of the society .
4. What do you think is the best of all the stated competencies? Why do you
think so?
- I think the best competency among 5 competencies that have been mentioned is the
Ethics, because in here, we don't take advantage of the weakness state of the person
just for them to agree to something that she /he otherwise would not likely to have done.
These is being aware of the consequences of the behavior, because if we value other
people's thought, there will be no misunderstanding. It's to respect other points of view
and tolerate disagreement.
15
- if I were to add another competency , it would be appropriateness . A competent
communicator would understand and communicate appropriately in the situation. They
would know when it's appropriate to use slang and to use formal vocabulary. This is too
far from Adaptibility because in order to adapt appropriately, you would need to
understand what is appropriate .

From your responses on the preceding activity, what was your realization as a
purposive communication student?
ANSWER: - As a purposive communication student I realized how important
communication is in our lives especially to connect people and to make relationship with
them. This serves as a bridge which connects every people to understand and listen to
their thoughts and perception. Through this, it solve our problems, there are no
misunderstanding, though sometimes to there are barriers that is why we misinterpret
someone. But when we communicate effectively , there will no be conflict among people
2. Contemplative You can do this by not focusing too much on what you
can see on the outside, try to take a deeper meaning or
understanding on things. Like for example when people
seems to be judging you and saying bad things at you,
instead of fighting back just stay still, ignore them and
use those hurtful words or experiences as a motivation.
Doing this you're not only helping yourself become calm
and relaxed but you're also helping yourself be
unbothered and refocus yourself on what you really
matters.
16
5. Polite Being polite, you have to be respectful, obedient and
kind to every single person. Also you must get rid of
anger, impatience, hate and boastfulness inside your
body.
8. Unbiased or - You can be good at these once you stop judging people
unprejudiced from the first look and try to get to know them first before
you say your final say about them. Because like everyone
says you can't really judge a book by its cover. So try to
be more understanding first and compassionate to these
type of people, because you might never know you might
hate them now but at the end you'll suddenly realize you
are both similar to each other.
10. Does not use slang Slang means words that came from the street and are
considered informal words or language. Instead of using
slang words, use words that are for educated people and
are considered formal because people actually consider
this as disrespectful and inappropriate especially if you
use this in school or workplace.
11. Watches the humor We all know jokes are meant to be funny, so before
saying jokes you must think first if it'll be funny or it'll be
hurtful for them. Because not everyone have humor,
some people take words seriously.
17
12. Maintains etiquette Be yourself and allow others to treat you with respect,
say “Thank You”, give genuine compliments, don't be
boastful, arrogant or loud, listen before speaking, speak
with kindness and caution, do not criticize or complain, be
punctual

From the video clip you have chosen, what were your observations of the four English
speakers? Describe their accent or pronunciation. How different is the word choice
among the four speakers? Do they have unique gestures and expressions when they
speak? All these questions lead us to the idea that truly English is dependent as to
how a person has been taught or exposed to the language. Also, geographical issues
contribute to how English has become for the people in the area. True enough, there
is no correct nor perfect English. That is the idea of the World Englishes came to
birth. However, two from these different Englishes make impact to the world –
American English and British English.

words they used and their expressions. I've also noticed that austrilian English and
american English is quite the same but they differ on how they pronounce it .

How many correct answers did you get from the activity above? How were you able to
identify the formal equivalent of the informal words mentioned in the activity? How
about for those informal counterparts of the formal terminologies? The higher score
you attained from the activity tells how wide your knowledge is when we talk about
the formal and informal registers of English. Why do we have to study this matter?
What is its impact to our venture of becoming effective and purposeful
communicators? We shall find out the answers to these questions in this lesson.
Answer: Formal language does not use colloquialisms, contractions or first person
pronouns such as 'I' or 'We'. Informal language is more casual and spontaneous. I
was able to get the equivalent words of the informal and formal words by first
determing it's spelling and the pronunciation is quite similar from the given words.

EVERY LIFE COUNTS
- Life is uncertain and full of change , a natural occurrence of time. In just a blink of an
eye anything can happen . Everything that we have now, will also vanish. I believe
that the unknown future is a mystery being solved which is passing second. I believe
that every second is a piece of a whole , with joy, anger , love , sorrow peace and
fear and passion that piece together to form life . And I believe that life is only as
meaningful as the seconds of which is composed . Nothing is permanent , hence
there are reasons to stay in dejection. There must be ups and downs , but it will just
come and pass . Above all , every person must be optimistic no matter how bad
things get. Every failure builds experience , and this experiences is what improves the
skill and effeciency of humans. The uncertainty is what makes life precious, no one
knows our time, but probably the most important thing is that, we should live our life
to the fullest and stop stressing ourselves , and not worrying about the future.

you considered in detecting the accurate delivery of purpose of the message? Certain

on the purposes laid down by the speaker when delivering his message.
Answer: - For me, Martin Luther King is much better that Jobs because of his
connection to the viewers . The way he speaks he allowed himself to have an almost
symbiotic connection with his audience . He drew energy from each other and he was
very tuned into level of energy in the room. That connection made the event more
than a speech, it made an experience that make people to act. When listening to his
42
speech, you'll hear that he always started with out at slow, measured conversational
pace, and over time , increased his pace and his volume as he drew the audience in.
It was just so good because he knows how to catch the hearts of the audience.

Compare your entries from the two conversations. Do they differ or are they quite
similar? In what way? Answer: When we are communicating with our teachers or
some well knwon people , the higher the respect we give for them and we talk to
them In a formal way, whereas when we are chatting with our friends or anyone close
to us we tend to use informal communication and the less respect we have for them.
The way you communicate with someone involves a lot of factors to consider (eg.
relationship, age gap, etc.). When you communicate with someone in the workplace,
you take into account his or her position in the company, your level of intimacy, and
the subject of your conversation. Usually, you maintain a level of respect and
formality when talking to someone you consider a senior or from higher positions. On
the other hand, with close peers, informality can be observed in your conversations.
