INTRODUCTION

Principal of Counting allows us to represent the group of data in different ways or

we can say the set of data from a group by different ways. In this question the same
is done we learned by how many ways a data can be grouped.
OBJECTIVE

Objective of this project

 Using Factorial
 Applying technique of combination
 Applying principles of counting to solve question
Question:

A box contains 7 red, 6 white and 4 blue balls. How many selections of three balls
can be made so that a) none is red b) one of each colour
For solving this, we need to note the following:
!
Number of ways of selecting m balls from total n balls = = !( )!

n! = n*(n-1)*(n-2)*(n-3)*……*1 with 1! = 1 and 0! = 1

Part A
Number of ways of selecting three balls such that none is red means the three balls
selected should be only from white and blue coloured balls.
It can happen in following ways:

i) 0 white ball out of 6 and 3 blue balls out of 4,

Using the theory described above this can happen in = * number of
ways:
! !
= !( )!
= ∗ !
=1

! ! ∗ ∗ ∗
= !( )!
= !∗ !
= ∗ ∗ ∗
= = 4

So result is = 1*4 = 4

ii) 1 white ball out of 6 and 2 blue balls out of 4

This can happen in = * = 6 * 6 = 36

iii) 2 white balls out of 6 and 1 blue ball out of 4

This can happen in = * = 15 * 4 = 60

iv) 3 white balls out of 6 and 0 blue ball out of 4

This can happen in = * = 20 * 1 = 20

So total number of ways = (i) + (ii) + (iii) + (iv) = 4 + 36 + 60 + 20 = 120

Part B

Number of ways of selecting three balls such that one ball of each colour is selected
means 1 white out of 6, 1 red out of 7 and 1 blue out of 4 balls.
Using the same technique as above,

This can happen in following number of ways:

* * = 6*7*4 = 168
CONCLUSION

From this we got to know:

 Calculating Factorial of a number
 Using factorial of a number to calculate Combination
 How an event can happen as several sub-events
 Applying the technique of combination which is part of Principle of
Counting to solve a given problem
