CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Definition of gas lift

Gas lift is the method of artificial lift which utilizes an external source of high
pressure gas for supplementing formation gas to reduce the bottom hole pressure
and lift the well fluids. The primary consideration in the selection of a gas lift
system for lifting a well, group of wells, or an entire field, is the availability of
gas and the cost of compression.
In a typical gas lift system, compressed gas is injected through gas lift mandrels
and valves into the production string.
There are two main types of gas lift
Continuous gas lift.
Intermittent gas lift.
Advantages of gas lift
Subsurface gas lift equipment is relatively inexpensive.
Most efficient in wells that produce sand and have high gas/liquid ratio.
Flexible in meeting changing producing conditions.
Adaptable in crooked hole.
Capable of lifting large volumes of fluid.
Most gas lift valves are simple devices with few moving parts.
Gas lift valves may be wireline retrievable (without killing the well or pulling the
tubing).
Disadvantages of gas lift
Requires a continuous source of makeup gas.
High operating cost if makeup gas in purchased.
Safety hazards handling high pressure gas.

1
High initial investment.
Frequent optimization is required.
High operating cost with corrosive gases.
Wet gases without proper dehydration will reduce the reliability of gas lift
operations.

Objectives of the study

To enable wells that will not flow naturally to produce.
To increase production rates in natural flowing wells.
To unload a well that will later flow naturally.
To remove or unload fluids from gas wells and to keep the gas well unloaded
(usually intermittent, but can be continuous).
To back flow salt water disposal wells to remove sands and other solids that can
plug the perforations in the well.
Combining surface observation and down hole information led to good decisions
and helped in increasing and bringing wells back on production.
