Problem
• I have a limited budget.
• Engine performance
• Gas mileage
• Difficulty
• Time for build
Criteria
Price: Max budget is $2,500
Must perform better than its’ stock counterpart
20 MPG or better
Must be able to perform the swap in a garage with hand tools
Time frame of 1 month
Analysis
3S-GE:
The 3S-GE can be purchased from eBay for $1,800. The engine swap is a direct fit, with very
minor modification. It makes 170-180 horsepower, which is 35-45 horsepower more than stock.
The 3S-GE averages about 22-28 miles per gallon. I could complete this in two weeks.
BEAMS:
The BEAMS can be purchased from JDM Imports for $3,000. The engine swap is a direct fit, with
modification. It makes 200 horsepower, which is 65 horsepower more than stock. The BEAMS
averages about 19 miles per gallon. With time to import the engine and to complete the swap
would take two months.
2GR-FE:
The 2GR-FE is readily available, many vehicles use this engine such as: Toyota Avalon, Toyota
Camry and a Toyota Sienna. It can be purchased for $1,000. The swap would need custom
fabrication and heavy wiring. It makes 300 horsepower, which is 165 horsepower more than
stock. The 2GR-FE averages 30 miles per gallon. The swap would take 6-12 months to complete,
and specialty tools and equipment.
The chart below rates each engine from 1-5 where 5 is the best. The highest total is the
best choice.
Conclusion
The three engines were evaluated by the above criteria for the engine only as you can see
by the chart above. Granted if you needed to replace engine parts or had more resources
the evaluation will change.
Recommendation
The 3S-GE is clearly the best option for my 1994 Toyota Celica, it can be completed using
hand tools and is a good price for the performance.
