COVER LETTERS

What is Cover Letter?


• A cover letter is a document attached to your Job Application that shows why you’re
the best candidate.
• Cover Letter = Letter of Application
• Letter of Application = a sales letter in which the writer is both salesperson and
product.
• Function to attract an employer’s attention and persuade her to grant you an
interview (importantly get the job).
Important !
• Letter of Application consists a sample of your work in which it demonstrates your
skills and personality.
• In Letter of Application, it is your chance to interpret and expand what you wrote in
the CV.
• A Letter of Application must communicate your ambition and enthusiasm, but must
also be modest.
HEADING

In Heading you should write down your Contact Information which includes Your Full Name
as well as your Title (If any), address, email, phone number and also your professional
account (if any) and lastly the date when you wrote the Letter.
INSIDE ADDRESS

Contains the name of the employer, his/her position, company’s name and the address of
the company or organization.
SALUTATION

An Expression of greeting to the employer that comes immediately before the body of the
letter.
Important!
Never use any greeting that indicates time such as good morning, good afternoon, good
evening, etc.

• First Paragraph
Attract the attention of the employer.
1st sentence: let the employer know where you find the information of the job.
(from whom or from what publication, advertisement or any source of
information did you aware of the job opening)

Create the employers’ interest or desire in your application by indicating
your educational attainment.

• Next Paragraphs
Indicate your work experience and training sessions attended. It also
shows your personal attitudes, interests, qualities, and activities toward
the job.

• Last Paragraph
Assure the employer that you are the right candidate for the job you are
seeking. Here, you are also advised to emphasize in writing your contact
that they can reach if they are going to proceed with next step.
COMPLIMENTARY CLOSE

Serves to end the message just as goodbye serves to end conversation.


You can use either regards, best regards, sincerely, etc. After writing your
Complimentary Close, don’t forget to sign and write your full name. It is
very IMPORTANT.
Tips on Writing an Application Letter/ a Cover Letter
• Start by attracting attention.
You must say that you are applying for a specific job, and mention how you heard about it. Try to
find the word to show that you are highly interested with the job.
• Describe your qualifications
Highlight your strengths and achievements and say how they suit you for the job at hand. Provide
details and explanations that might not found in your CV/resume.
• Assure the employer that you are the person for the job.
List verifiable facts that give evidence of your strengths.
• Conclude by requesting an interview.
• Don’t write any empty words such as hard worker, able to work under pressure, etc.
