“Think globally, act locally” simply means that a teacher has to be equipped with teaching

strategies and techniques that can be of par with the global teaching arena. He has to be open-
minded on world issues and events that can be of benefit to his locale.

TREND 4: FOCUS ON THE MULTICULTURAL NATURE OF

AMERICAN SOCIETY

The United States has been called a “nation of nations.” More immigrants are coming to
this nation today than in the great period of immigration in the late 1800s and early
1900s. But today’s new Americans are coming from every nation and cultural region in
the world. All Americans, both old and new, belong in the history of this nation.
Recognition of this diverse and changing society is associated with the term
“multiculturalism.” The effective social studies curriculum highlights and celebrates the
diversity of our society. A true multicultural perspective presents an accurate picture of
all the different groups that comprise our pluralistic society. Students learn about the
beliefs and goals that bind us together as a nation. The motto “e pluribus unum” (from
many, one) forms the basis of a realistic and beneficial multicultural education.

TREND 5: RENEWED ATTENTION TO WESTERN CIVILIZATION

One of the most difficult tasks facing teachers and curriculum developers today is
balancing multiculturalism with the appropriate focus on America’s heritage from
western Europe, which is also marked by diversity. While it is essential that students
should learn about the contributions and heritage of all Americans, they should also
learn about the origins of many of the beliefs and principles that have made the United
States unique among nations. Without neglecting the important ideas and technological
advances of peoples in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas, students are
learning about the growth of political and economic freedom that had its roots primarily
in western Europe. Moreover, these ideals have become a model for governments
throughout the world. Recognizing that the underlying principles of our political system
have a western European base is just as important as, for example, giving credit to the
Chinese for inventing paper or to the people of India for developing zero in arithmetic.
The new social studies curriculum seems to be heading for a blend of global
multiculturalism, including emphasis on western civilization.
Ngunit nananatili ang Saudi Arabia sa paghihigpit sa mga kababaihan. This is to

Globalized teachers are someone who thinks and acts both locally and globally with
worldwide perspectives but is teaching in the communities.

At its core, global learning is about facilitating educational experiences that allow students
to appreciate diverse perspectives, understand the connections they have to the wider world,
respectively and effectively communicate and collaborate across cultures and countries, and
use disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge to investigate and take action on issues that
matter to them and the wider world. Global learning should not be an “extra” or “nice-to-have”
course that only a handful of students can take, nor should it be relegated to a fun project the
last few weeks of school. Why? Global issues and perspectives can easily be integrated as a
lens for teaching any and all content areas.
College and Career Readiness.

Our economy is global, with over 40 million U.S. jobs tied to international trade. Employers
today are desperate to higher graduates with cross-cultural skills that allow them to work in
diverse teams and with clients all over the world. By providing students with opportunities to
understand the wider world and the diversity of people, cultures, and perspectives in it, schools
are also giving students a competitive edge in the marketplace.

Student Engagement.

Research shows that when students learn content through authentic tasks and real-world
experiences, they are more likely to engage, which in turn leads to higher attendance and
achievement. Global education directly engages students with real-world issues and activities.
What better way to entice students to practice Spanish than have them Skype with peers in
Mexico, or to teach the skills of writing an argumentative essay by having them debate global
current events pulled straight from the headlines?

Social-Emotional Learning.

Learning from and with the world doesn’t only benefit students’ academic development, but
contributes to their social-emotional development as well. Global education helps develop self-
awareness of one’s own identity, culture, beliefs and how those connect with the wider world,
social awareness including empathy, perspective-taking, appreciating diversity, and respecting
others, and relationship-building skills with diverse individuals and groups through effective
communication and collaboration.

Student Empowerment.

Global learning enables students with agency to take purposeful action to improve their own
lives and to positively influence the world around them. When students are provided
opportunities to investigate issues they deem important (be it gun violence, access to clean
water, or human rights violations), unpack why these issues exist, and come up with solutions to
make them better, they become empowered to be the catalysts of the changes they wish to see.
As numerous teachers and school administrators implementing global education initiatives I
have worked with attest, once you open the door for students to take action, you will be amazed
at the fundraisers, campaigns, projects, programs, and protests they will devise on their own to
make the world a better place.

Is global education necessary?

Global Education is a necessity for the 21st Century learner. Our world is increasingly
interconnecting everyday. Our students no longer only compete domestically. Global education
enables people to understand the links between their own lives and those of people throughout
the world.

Me: Global education aims at developing learning communities, in which learners and
educators are encouraged to work cooperatively on global issues. Global education
aims at stimulating and motivating learners and educators to approach global issues
through innovative teaching and pedagogy.

It prepares us to address the world's most pressing issues collaboratively, equitably, and
sustainably.
