PERFORMANCE TASK # 5: VITAL SIGNS and FIRST-AID KIT

Name: Maegan Loraine A. Cervantes Gr/Strand: 11 Stem 3A Brilliance Date: 5/19/22 Score: ____
OBJECTIVES:

• Determine the normal ranges of the vital signs;

• Discuss the significance of giving first-aid; and,
• Enumerate the functions of the contents of a first-aid kit.

EXERCISE # 1: (Please refer to our discussion notes)

1. Complete the table below: (make sure to specify the unit of the normal range)

VITAL SIGN DEFINITION NORMAL RANGE

1. Pulse Rate The pulse rate is the number of

times the heart beats each
minute. The arteries expand 60 - 100 bpm
and constrict in response to the (beats per minute)
flow of blood as the heart
pushes it through them.
2. Respiration Rate The number of breaths taken
per minute is referred to as the
respiration rate. When a person
is at rest, the rate is normally
assessed by counting the 16 – 30 cpm
number of breaths taken in one
minute by noting how many (cycles per minute)
times the chest rises. Fever,
sickness, and other medical
conditions can cause an
increase in respiratory rate.
3. Blood Pressure The pressure of flowing blood
against the walls of blood
arteries is referred to as blood 90 – 120
pressure. The majority of this
pressure is caused by the heart
pumping blood via the 60 – 80
circulatory system. The word (mmHg / millimeter of
"blood pressure" refers to the mercury)
pressure in the major arteries
when used without qualifier.
4. Temperature Temperature is a measure of
how hot or cold something is 36. 5 – 37.5
represented in terms of one of
several scales, including (degree Celsius)
Fahrenheit and Celsius.
2. Choose ten (10) materials that you can find in a first-aid kit and give a brief description of its

function. Fill-in the information using the table below.

FIRST AID MATERIAL FUNCTION

1. ALCOHOL Alcohol is used in medicine in many forms as an

antiseptic, disinfectant, and antidote. Alcohol is
administered to the skin to sterilize it before a needle
stick or operation. They can be used to disinfect both
the person's skin and the hands of healthcare
personnel.
2. POVIDONE IODINE Povidone-iodine, often known as iodopovidone, is an
antiseptic that is used to clean the skin before and
after surgery. It can be used to disinfect both
healthcare professionals' hands and the skin of the
person being cared for. It can also be used to treat
small wounds.
3. GAUZE PAD A gauze pad is a piece of cloth used to protect and
cushion a wound, absorb blood or other fluids, apply
ointments, or wipe cleansing fluids into a wound or
site of incision, such as rubbing alcohol or iodine.
Gauze is a light, thin, loosely woven fabric that is often
made of cotton or a synthetic fiber, however it can
also be made of other materials such as silk.
4. ADHESIVE (SURGICAL) TAPE Surgical tape, also known as medical tape, is a form of
pressure-sensitive adhesive tape that is used in
medicine and first aid to secure a bandage or other
dressing to a lesion. These tapes often include a
hypoallergenic adhesive that is meant to adhere
strongly to skin, dressing materials, and underlying
layers of tape while also being easy to remove without
hurting the skin. They permit air to reach the skin
("breathable").  Surgical tape is frequently white
because it includes zinc oxide, which is applied to aid
in infection prevention.
5. ADHESIVE BANDAGE An adhesive bandage, also known as a sticking plaster,
medical plaster, or simply plaster in British English, is a
tiny medical treatment used for injuries that do not
require a full-size bandage. They are also known by
the genericized names Band-Aid or Elastoplast.
6. GLOVES used as a hand cover to avoid wound infection before
administering antiseptics and ointments.
7. ELASTIC BANDAGE A compression bandage is a long stretchy piece of
cloth that may be wrapped around a sprain or strain.
It's also known as a Tensor bandage or an elastic
bandage. Because the bandage's mild pressure helps
reduce swelling, it may make the damaged region feel
better.
8. LINIMENT Liniments are generally offered to reduce pain and
stiffness caused by aches and strains in the muscles or
arthritis.
9. THERMOMETER A thermometer is a device used to measure
temperature. It can measure the temperature of a
solid like food, a liquid like water, or a gas like air. The
three most prevalent temperature measuring units are
Celsius, Fahrenheit, and kelvin.
10. MEDICINES Medicines are chemicals or substances that are used to
treat, stop, or prevent disease, alleviate symptoms, or
aid in the identification of disorders.

EXERCISE # 2:

1. Choose ONE (1) person in your home/community (e.g. family member, relatives, friends,
neighbors, etc.). Using the procedure taught by your teacher, get the following vital signs:
PULSE RATE, RESPIRATION RATE, and TEMPERATURE and describe whether it is
BELOW NORMAL, NORMAL, or ABOVE NORMAL using the range that you have learned.

Attach three (3) photos (for each vital sign) of you performing the procedure.

Name of patient: Portia A. Cervantes Age: 60

VITAL SIGN VALUE OF VITAL SIGN TAKEN DESCRIPTION

1. Pulse Rate 85 bpm (beats per minute) NORMAL

2. Respiration Rate 22 cpm (cycles per minute) NORMAL

3. Temperature 36° NORMAL
