Physics Worksheet – Chapter 4 Nature of Waves
4.3 Graphical descriptions of transverse waves

1. The diagram shows the y-x (displacement-position) graph of a wave travelling to the right in a stretched
spring at time t = 0. If the frequency is 6 Hz,
(a) (i) find the wave speed.
v = f
v = 6 x (2 / 1.5)
v = 8 m s-1
1
(ii) in the graph, draw the wave at t = s.

(b) Sketch a new y-x graph if the tension of the string increases.
y/m wavelength is will be increased

x/m

2. The diagram shows the y-x graph of a wave travelling to the

right at time t = 0. A, B and C are three particles in the medium.
At t = 0.1 s, the displacement of A becomes 2 m for the first
time. What are the displacements of B and C at t = 0.1 s?
Displacement of particle B = -2 m
Displacement of particle C = 0

3. The diagram shows the displacement-position (y-x) graphs of a wave travelling in the positive x
direction at times t = 0 and t = 0.2 s.
(a) Given that the period is greater than 0.2 s.
Find the frequency.
T / 4 = 0.2
T = 0.8 s
f = 1/ T = 1 / 0.8
f = 1.25 Hz
(b) Hence find the wave speed.
v = f
v = 1.25 x 3
v = 3.75 m s-1

4. Figure a shows the displacement-position (y-x) graph of a wave travelling to the right at time t = 0. A is
a particle in the medium. At t = 0.6 s, the displacement of A becomes -1 m for the first time.

Calculate the wave speed.

v = f
v=/T
v = 6 / 0.8
v = 7.5 m s-1

5. The diagram shows the displacement-time (y-t) graphs of particles A and B in a string. Given that the
wave speed is 0.6 m s-1.

(a) What is the period of the wave?

T = 0.06 s
(b) Find the wavelength.
v = f
0.6 = 1/0.06 x 
 = 0.036 m
(c) What is the minimum separation between A and B?
0.018 m

6. Figure a shows the y-x graph of a wave travelling to the right at time t = 0. P is a particle in the medium.
Sketch the y-t graph of particle P in Figure b.
