LINE 1 Volvo develops “virtual” Mother – to – be to improve car safety.

There’s “virtual” reality “virtual” prototypes and virtual simulations that rely on
sophisticated software to mimic the actions of a process or product. Now Volvo
Car Corporation, Goteborg, Sweden, has developed what it calls the world’s first
LINE 5 “virtual” crash – test dummy, of a woman in the late stages of pregnancy. This
computer model will help engineers’ and designers’ understanding of this
constituency as they develop automotive safety systems.

The basic geometry of the model was completed in January, with ongoing
refinements under way since then. “Now it is finished and we have started
LINE 10 running simulated front – end impact tests on it”, says Camilla Palmertz, a
biomechanical engineer at the Volvo Cars Safety Center in Goteborg. “One big
advantage is that both mother and baby can be scaled up or down to the size
we want to study.”

Volvo says the purpose of initial tests will be to study how a mother – to – be
LINE 15 and her fetus are affected by seat belts and air bags in simulated collisions. The
computer model allows engineers to study the influence of the belt and airbag on
the fetus and how the fetus moves in relation to the mother’s body. “We have to
find out more to protect the fetus in the best possible way” Palmertz says.
