Brake System Pressure - Test and Adjust

SMCS - 4251-025; 4251-081; 4267-025; 4267-081

Note: The brake system pressures should be verified through Cat ET.

(A) Pressure tap for the brake system pressure

1. Connect a hose assembly with an 8T-0860 Pressure Gauge (0 to 40000 kPa (0 to 5800 psi)) to
pressure tap (A) .

2. Start the engine. Allow the brake accumulators to charge fully.

3. Run the engine at low idle. The pressure in the brake accumulators will decrease because of
leakage in the system and lubrication. Allow the charge cycle for the brake accumulators to
occur at least ten times before any measurements are made.

Note: If a gauge is used, note the gauge reading at the cut-in pressure and at the cutout pressure.

4. Observe the pressure at the cut-in pressure and at the cutout pressure.

Note: The pressure setting for the cutout is 13620 ± 350 kPa (1975 ± 50 psi). The cut-in
pressure should be 11170 ± 690 kPa (1620 ± 100 psi).

5. Check Cat ET in order to verify that the pressures from Step 4 are accurate.

Leakage

When the brake pump is at the low idle setting, the pressure will cycle between the cut-in pressure
and the cutout pressure. The cycle should occur in less than 9 seconds. If this cycle occurs in more
than 9 seconds, there may be leakage in the system that should be corrected.

1. Start the engine. Allow the brake accumulators to charge fully.

Note: Once the brake accumulators are fully charged, the cycle between the cut-in and cutout
pressure should return to less than 9 seconds.

2. To locate the cause of the excessive leakage, shut down the engine with the engine shutdown
control. Do not shut down the engine with the ignition key. The engine shutdown switch is
located on the left side of the machine under the left-hand ladder.

3. The pressure in the brake accumulators will decrease because of leakage in the system and
lubrication. If there is a significant leak, one system will decay more rapidly.

4. Observe the pressure at the accumulators.

Note: Before any compartments are removed, make sure that the brake accumulators have been
fully discharged. Move the engine start switch to the ON position.

If the pressure for the brake accumulators drops rapidly, check the following items:

◦ Check valves

◦ Diverter valves

◦ Solenoid valves

◦ Accumulator charging valve

◦ Brake valve

◦ Control valve for the TCS

Standby Pressure for the Brake System

Note: An override for the software can be performed on the unloader valve through Cat ET in order to
verify the following test.

Illustration 3 g02128878

(A) Filter for the brake system

(B) Pressure tap for the brake system pressure

1. Connect a hose assembly with an 8T-0860 Pressure Gauge (0 to 40000 kPa (0 to 5800 psi)) to
pressure tap (B) .

Note: The pressure gauge needs to withstand the maximum pressure of the brake actuation
pump section.

2. Start the engine. Allow the brake accumulators to charge fully.

3. Run the engine at low idle. Allow the charge cycle for the brake accumulators to occur at least
ten times before any measurements are made.

Note: Note the gauge reading at unloading pressure for the brake system. The pressure at
pressure tap (2) will drop to unloading pressure for the brake system when the brake
accumulators are fully charged.

4. Observe the pump pressure at low-pressure standby.

Note: At low idle, the pressure setting at pressure tap (B) for the low-pressure standby should
be less than 1380 kPa (200 psi).

5. If the pressure does not reach the standby pressure for the brake system, perform the cut-in and
the cutout test.

6. If the pressure at unloading pressure for the brake system is incorrect, inspect the diverter valve
or the solenoid valves.
