In this lesson, we will be discussing the ways of handling hazardous materials.

At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
1. identify some harmful or hazardous materials at home
2. list down the proper ways of handling harmful materials

Let’s Explore
Materials are useful. They can also be sources of accidents if not handled properly. There are lots of
hazardous substances being commonly used in homes and public places. Garden products, paints and painting
materials, cleaning products, pet products and even cosmetics can be dangerous if not used or stored properly.

Ways of Handling Hazardous Materials at Home


a. Do not leave a lighted candle. Put out any flame when not in use.
b. Turn off cooking gas tanks when not in use or when a leak is
suspected.
c. Avoid walking or running on wet floor. Wipe wet floors at once.
d. Never taste. Touch or smell, or take in materials that are not familiar
to you.
e. Take only medicines upon doctor’s advice and with adult
supervision.
f. Do not run or walk around with a barbecue stick or candy stick in
your mouth.
g. When eating fruits, be careful not to swallow the seeds of fruits like
atis and santol.
h. Store water in clean container.
i. Do not play with matches or lighter
j. Do not place materials that burn easily, such as curtains, near oil or
gas lamps or lighted candles.
k. Do not handle electrical appliances when taking a bath or when wet.
l. The hands, the feet and the floor should be dry before plugging in an
electrical cord.

These are simple ways of using products safely.

2. Take special care to protect children from harm.
3. Store all harmful materials safely.

4. Dispose of used containers and products properly.
5. Safely use and store common products.
Below is a list of how the following common products should be safely used:
a. Dishwashing materials bleach and detergent should never be mixed together. .
b. Used killer pest sprays and fertilizers should be handled with care.
c. Hair dye, deodorants, sunscreen, soap and toothpaste are potentially harmful and must be kept
out of reach of children.
d. Aerosol cans, paint and painting products should be used with special care.
e. Flea, mite and worm treatment for pets should never be used on humans.

1. List down all the potentially dangerous materials found in your house. Ask the help of your
parents to assist you on how to handle the materials carefully.
2. Record the name of the materials and write why these materials can harm or prone danger to
human.
