1. Read the following article about a robotic pet dog.

Answer the corresponding

questions at the bottom of the article.

2. The article is dated (1999) and much progress has been made in robotics. In fact,
some of these robots are more than just toys and used for therapeutic purposes,
such as elderly or children patients. Research the topic and come up with an
example of this use. Comment on any ethical issues that might be relevant?

3. Go to You Tube and find newer/fun examples of interesting and exciting robots.

1. I think AIBO could replace real dogs for some people because people may have
allergies to dogs or people may not be able to afford to take care of them.
Allergies are obviously an issue but the cost of food and equipment you need for a
dog can be pricey. You also need a lot of time for a dog because it needs exercise
and attention.
2. I think AIBO can learn just like a real dog. It is built to have emotions so AIBO
could probably learn to do new things. For example, new tricks or emotions that
are shown by actual living things. I just think it would be harder for AIBO to
learn things. AIBO’s learning is different than a living thing because it is
programmed to know these things. Living things must learn how to do certain
things.
3. AIBO has amotions but they are way different than ours. AIBO is programmed to
react a specific way when its angry or happy. Humans react differently when they
feel emotions. We all have our own way of expressing our feelings whereas AIBO
is programmed to do certain actions.

PARO is a therapeutic baby seal for patients who need an animal-assisted therapy. It is
meant to calm and relax the patient.
Robots can steal millions of people’s jobs. People won’t be able to pay their rent or pay
for food if robots take all their jobs. AI’s can also make mistakes and those mistakes may
harm humans. For example, a person was hit and killed by a uber self-driving car.
