Transition
What Burns & McDonell’s role is in helping Scotland become a leader in renewable
energy
MOTHERWELL, SCOTLAND. There has been significant growth for Burns &
McDonell in their century of business, and they look forward to taking their next step in
expansion. Burns and McDonell will be opening up an office in Scotland, as they set out to help
support the energy transition that Scotland is trying to embark on. This new era of energy in
Scotland will bring an expansion to their current power grid, and will provide new opportunity

How Burns & McDonell’s expertise will be utilized
Burns and McDonell will be aiding this project by providing their expertise on
engineering and construction to help in the development of the energy transition. The main
objective of this project, is to provide necessary updates to the current power grid that Scotland
is using, as well as increase the power capacity from what is currently at. Burns and McDonell
will also see that their new solutions in this project will see them utilize renewable energy for
homes and businesses all across Scotland. This project is just another stepping stone in the rise of
Burns and McDonell. The office they will be opening in Scotland will be located Motherwell
Scotland, just outside of Glasgow, and will continue to be hiring new employees to work on the
project. The work that will be conducted will not only help create and maintain jobs for the
future, but the growth that Burns & McDonell is seeing in their own company, means they will
be providing jobs in Scotland immediately as well. This will create engineering and construction
The United Kingdom managing director of Burns & McDonell, Jonathan Chapman,
stated that “This is another exciting and important step for our company as we set up another
new office and welcome additional talented engineers to our team.” This new expansion is
another megaproject that Burns & McDonell will be able to add to their resume, as their status as
a top engineering firm continues to rise. This comes at no surprise to those in the engineering and
construction community, as Burns & McDonell received $5.7 billion in sales over the last year.
The proof of profitability has put confidence in their clients and that lead to Scotland choosing

What will it take to become a leader in renewal energy?
stated that “Burns & McDonell is a long-established, global engineering firm, so it is excellent
that the company has chosen Scotland to expand its U.K. presence.” This new office in
Motherwell will be the third one in the U.K. following the openings of offices in Birmingham
back in 2017, and their more recent on in London, which opened earlier in 2022.
Scotland, like many countries around the world, has been trying to change the way
energy is used and produced. With advancements in technology changing yearly, renewable
energy is more accessible for countries now. One of the methods that will be used is to continue
wind deployment. Scotland currently has 17 offshore wind projects underway, and they look to
increase this with the help of Burns & McDonell. Burns & McDonell’s expertise in construction
is one of the reasons Scotland entrusted them with these substation projects. These substation
projects are set to provide a location that contains the electrical equipment that provides the
voltage and electrical power for the people of the communities to utilize. Their primary focuses
on the project will be help develop and design the infrastructure, as well as provide insight on
how to make the entire power grid more modern and efficient for years to come.
One of the essential members of this new projects is Scott Bryce, who will be in charge
of the construction operations. Bryce, who will be a part of the growing team that Burns &
McDonell is sending to Scotland, says that there will be a “growing pipeline of projects” to
come. This tells us that there are more projects that will be underway between Burns &
McDonell for the foreseeable future, cementing another great client for the Engineering and

The future looks efficient for Scotland
As these new projects are underway, the grass looks green for the future of Burns &
McDonell, and for the work they will be doing on Scotland’s power grid. There are still no
updates on when the work will start on the power grids, but the pieces are in place in
Motherwell, working to design and map everything out. As Scotland looks to become a world
wide leader in renewable energy, it will be great to see the kind of work that Burns & McDonell
