Diphthongs
The underlined words in the story like toils, coy, toy, Roy, destroy, joy moist are called
diphthongs.
Diphthongs are vowel sound that begins as one sound and blend into another when they are
articulated. They can be achieved through the use of two consecutive vowels as well as one
vowel that changes as it is pronounced. Words with oi, oy, au, ow, and oo are diphthongs
Examples:
oi Oy Au ow oo
Oil Toy Aunt Snow food
Boil Boy Haunt Flow mood
Coil Soy Pause Grow moon
Soil Joy Taut Bowl soon

Root words and Affixes


A root word is a base word or main word. It does not have a prefix or suffix.
A prefix is a syllable added to the beginning of a word to form a new word. It changes
the meaning of the word.
Examples: review disobedient
misspelled recount
unhurt informal
Here are some prefixes and their meanings:
Dis – means “not” or “opposite of.”
Examples: dishonest – not honest
distrust – not to trust
Un – means “not”
Examples: unhappy – not happy
Unkind – not kind
Re – means” again “
Examples: repay – pay again
regain – gain again
A suffix is a syllable added to the end of a word to form a new word. It changes the meaning
of a word. Some common suffixes are; er, or, ist, ious, eous, y, ful, less, ing, s, d, ly, ed, ment,
able, ty and es.

Examples:

noise -y noisy
courage -ous courageous
mystery -ious mysterious
talk -ing talking
develop -ment development
