1.3 Working Principles and Structure Characteristics

FFZ75-3.5 Diverter is annular type diverter which will close and seal off on tubulars
in the wellbore or completely seal off the open hole to full rated working pressure by
compression of a rein reinforced packing unit.
Any normal closing unit having a separate pressure regulator valve and sufficient
accumulator volume can be used to operate the diverter .The hydraulic operating fluid
may be clean, light petroleum hydraulic oil, or water with a water soluble oil added. In
cold climates, anti-freeze should be added to prevent freezing.
The closing time of the diverter is determined by the rate at which the hydraulic fluid
can be delivered to the closing chamber. Minimum closing time is achieved by using short,
large diameter control lines, large bore control valves, and a large accumulator volume.

Caution: An excessively high setting on the pressure regulator valve will have little effect on
the diverter closing time.

1.4 Packing Units and Seals

The packing unit and seals of diverter are manufactured by Hydril from high quality
rubber. Packing units are manufactured from compounded natural rubber or nitrile rubber.
The packer has a large storage capacity. Rubbers among packer’s supporting ribs may
be crushed to the wellhead and sealed. The volume of packer is much larger than the
space which needs to close in. Therefore, they can close in different shape and size of
drilling tools. If hydraulic control pressure is controlled by a depressuring pressure
regulating valve or a cushion accumulator, the packer can force stripping and allow
passing 18°tool joint . Because of the large reserve of rubber, if the packer is not
damaged seriously, it still can seal and its life can be tested. During the diverter’s working
process, the packer is damaged continually, so it needs to fill through increasing piston
stroke and crushing reserve rubber. When the piston stroke is the maximum (piston
moves to top), or the upper and lower surface of the packer’s supporting ribs close up
separately, it shows that the reserve rubber of packer run out. Even if increasing the
hydraulic control pressure, the packer can’t seal reliably. So the life of the packer can be
predicted by measuring the piston stroke.

3 Installation and Use

3.1 Preparation for use
Diverter shall be subjected to sealing pressure test until reaching the rated working
pressure before installation and shall be transported to the well site only after passing the
test. The Diverter shall be installed according to the form of combination of Diverter as
specified by the well control regulations.

3.2 Pressure test and test run

The diverter shall be fixed firmly after installation. Whether the blowout controller,
well controller and choke manifold are connected well, the hydrostatic pressure test shall
be performed together with the complete set of wellhead device, in order to examine the
reliability of each connecting part and the sealing performance, and they just can be used
after passing the test.
The diverter shall be started and stopped twice on the drill stand and remote control
panel, in order to check whether the starting and stopping are consistent with the actual
starting and stopping, and whether the pipeline is connected correctly. The air in the oil
line shall be exhausted. When in general drilling, the diverter shall be in startup position.
The wellhead device shall be comprehensively subjected to pressure test according
to related well control regulation. Each connecting bolt shall be fastened once after
pressure test, in order to avoid non-uniform elasticity. The tightening torque of the flange
bolt sees Table 3-1 or Table 3-2.

3.3 Surface Hookup:

The surface hookup of the Diverter shown in Figure 3-1 connects the hydraulic
operating pressure to the closing chamber of the BOP.
Pressure applied to the closing
chamber raises the piston and effects the
initial seal between the packing unit and
drill pipe. Closing pressure must be
maintained . Well pressure or test pressure
also acts on the piston below the sealed off
packing unit to decrease the closing force
acting on the packing unit.
During normal drilling operations, it is
recommended that the pressure regulator
valve for the diverter be set at the initial
closing pressure shown for the size pipe
being used. This pressure will ensure that
initial seal off is achieved should a "kick"
be encountered.
During diverter testing operations,
once initial seal off is achieved, closing Figure 3-1 Surface Hookup
pressure should be maintained as well
pressure is increased.

CAUTION: FFZ75-3.5 diverter is sensitive to its position relative to the

control system. If the control system is located at a level higher than the closing
chamber of the diverter, the hydrostatic head of the operating fluid may be
sufficient to prevent the piston from coming completely down. This will prevent the
packing unit from opening to full bore. For these situations, the installation of a
spring-activated normally closed 2-way valve rated for 3000 psi in the closing line
to drain the fluid head is recommended. Be sure to drain the fluid into a container.

7
Manual of FFZ75-3.5 Diverter Rev.A0

3.4 Surface Stripping Operations

When using the diverter to stripping in without well kill, must use 18°tool joint. On the
hydraulic control closing lines, in addition to the individual depressuring regulating valve,
if there is a accumulator, the hydraulic percussion in the closing chamber can be
obtained a cushioning effect to extend the packer’s service life. During forced stripping,
on the premise of sealing, hydraulic pressure should be adjusted as low as possible and
the speed of stripping should be controlled strictly. Especially the drill pipes should be put
up and down slowly through the joints.

CAUTION: Rotation of drill pipe in one position generates heat which is

detrimental to the packing unit if continued for a long period of time.

3.5 Operation and Caution

1. Normally, the control pressure(closing pressure) of the Diverter with individual
depressing pressure regulating valve should be less than or equal to 10.5MPa
and has certain proportion with wellbore pressure and the dimension of drilling
tool. If the diameter of drilling tool is large or the wellbore pressure is low, it
should be lowered correspondingly to extend the packer service life.
2. When well blowout happens, the Diverter can be used to shut in the well first, but
it can not be used for a long time. First, it can damage the rubber untimely.
Second, it has no locking device. If there is no special situation, it can not be
used to shut in the open-hole.
3. After reaching the target stratum, the Diverter should be checked by closing and
opening with drilling tool but no well pressure in well once every day to avoid the
packer blocking.
4. When using the Diverter for stripping in without well kill, it must use 18°tool joint.
On the hydraulic control closing lines, in addition to the individual depressuring
regulating valve, if there is a accumulator, the hydraulic percussion in the closing
chamber can be obtained a cushioning effect to extend the packer’s service life.
During forced stripping, on the premise of sealing, hydraulic pressure should be
adjusted as low as possible and the speed of stripping should be controlled
strictly. Especially the drill pipes should be put up and down slowly through the
joints.
5. After well cementing operation, open and close Diverter three times to discharge
the cement in body sleeve to prevent the cement solidification lead to the piston
cannot be moved.
6. After opening the Diverter, it should be checked if the diverter is opened fully to
prevent the packer to be scratched.
7. It is not allowed to release the wellbore pressure by opening the Diverter .
8. When the Diverter is in closing position, it is allowed to move drilling tool up and
down but not to turn it.
8
Manual of FFZ75-3.5 Diverter Rev.A0
9. Pay attention to keep the hydraulic fluid clean.

9
Manual of FFZ75-3.5 Diverter Rev.A0

4 Disassembly and Maintenance

The Diverter shall be subjected to appearance examination and seal test before
starting drilling each time or entering high-pressure hydrocarbon reservoir.
Diverter shall be comprehensively disassembled for examination and cleaning after
serving a well each time, and any damaged parts shall be replaced timely. Oil shall be
coated on the inner taper surface of the piston to avoid rusting, and the screw thread oil
shall be coated on the connecting thread part.

4.1 Disassembling steps
