Best wishes to Sligo Jazz Festival

from Paul & the team
#thomasconnollysligo
There will be hugs! - I have been looking forward to saying this for a long time: Sligo Jazz
Project’s Festival and Summer School is finally back up and running in 2022, after two years
of tragedy, difficulty and uncertainty throughout the world. As with every year, we have so
many musical treats in store, with the added empathy overload that our core audience of
jazz loving summer school participants brings to Sligo’s venues every time.

Our Artist-in-Residence this year is award-winning UK composer and bandleader Nikki Iles.
We have assembled an all-star jazz orchestra for her performance on Thursday 21 July which
like many of our events at Sligo Jazz each year, gives it that familiar one-off appeal. It
highlights the return of guitarist Mike Walker, who last time round was a member of the
band in residence, jazz supergroup “The Impossible Gentlemen”, and for whom Nikki has
written several pieces of music. Her husband Pete Churchill is here too, one of the UK’s
most celebrated jazz vocal educators and arrangers, so expect him to pop up where you’d
least expect.

Our festival is a varied mix as always, from Norwegian jazz tubist Daniel Herskedal to NYC
rising star Ashley Pezzotti and an all-star opening night treat with TRYPL and a stellar
international rhythm section. Please read on and enjoy the week, it is always six days of
equal measures of education, entertainment and inspiration!

Enjoy!
Eddie Lee
Artistic Director, Sligo Jazz Project

This year’s festival is dedicated to the memory of

& John Moriarty (Irl)
Our opening duo of this year’s festival met at the final of the
Montreux Jazz Festival Guitar Competition in 2006. Björn Solli
and John Moriarty have continued to play together since in
various settings. Solli has played extensively in Norway with his
own group Solid, as well as Seamus Blake, Aaron Parks and many
others. John Moriarty is at the forefront of jazz guitar in Ireland,
having performed with Louis Stewart from the early 2000s and
currently in groups led by Richie Buckley as well as his own
quartet. In this setting the guitarists explore well-loved standards
as well as original arrangements and compositions.

Sligo Jazz Project welcomes the

return of Dublin native Christine, an
integral part of both the New York
City and London jazz scenes for
many years, who has recently
returned to Ireland and now resides
in Roscommon. “Tobin’s 24 carat
voice” was how The Guardian
recently described her talents,
praising her both for the poetry of
her compositions and the warmth of
her golden voice. Her ‘Tower of
Song’ repertoire includes Tobin
originals alongside striking
interpretations of Leonard Cohen
songs (for which she won a Herald
Angel Award at the 2013 Edinburgh
Festival) and much more. In 2012
she won a BASCA British Composer
Award and in 2014 she was awarded
“Jazz Vocalist of the Year” at the
Parliamentary Jazz Awards. Earlier in
her career Christine won “Best
Vocalist” at the BBC Jazz Awards.

The Whispering Gallery Presents
Cathal Roche’s ‘Love of Moving Parts’
An Immersive music performance-installation for
solo performer, community voices & woodwind octet.
Throughout lockdown composer and saxophonist
Cathal Roche, feeling the need to talk, invited the
people of Sligo to leave anonymous voice messages
describing their experiences of discovery and loss
during the pandemic.  During the reopening of
public spaces, The Model, Sligo, invited people
to visit and record their voices in person.
One such visitor was Ken Roht, an actor from the US,
who began hosting groups of friends back home
online and emailing in voices of mostly sidelined
performers experiencing another kind of hiatus.
The resulting collection of bits and scraps of
transatlantic testimony from the last 2 years
offers the listener a rainbow of moving voices,
woven together.. pulled apart.. in search of music, love, healing and understanding.
Roche on 9 woodwind instruments (bass flute to baritone saxophone) plays counterpoint to
feeling and leads when the words fail.

Love of Moving Parts for solo saxophone and multi-tracked ensemble takes place in a 32-

Daniel Herskedal - tuba, bass trumpet

Daniel Herskedal Daniel Herskedal is

the enigmatic master of sound and
sonorous beauty. His music ebbs and
flows with utter grace and poise,
perfectly fusing the spirit of jazz with
the compositional craft of classical
music. Seldom do you hear a musician
with such depth, emotive intensity and
virtuosity shine who is simultaneously
pushing the boundaries of his
instrument to the limit. Possessed with
real melodic resonance, Daniel
Herskedal is a hugely gifted and
dynamic composer. His music breathes
and is full of life. While his last 3
albums have earned him huge praise
and adoring fans, this new music
expands on the direction and takes
influence from ‘Mistral Noir', the
opening track from his album ‘Slow
Eastbound Train', performed entirely
solo, layering both tuba and bass
trumpet in a both a mesmerising and
sublimely beautiful way.

He is is a composer of highly original, beautifully lyrical, rhythmically charged music inspired

by the stunning Norwegian landscape and a world-class performer on Tuba, an instrument he
has made uniquely his own. Daniel Herskedal’s newest album Harbour cements his position as
one the most exciting, prolific and inspiring musicians of his generation in Europe.

“Norwegian tuba player Daniel Herskedal is nothing short of a miracle, which is mainly
brought about by his perfect mastery of the instrument. - Jazzenzo

“Passionate… superb… heartfelt” – The Guardian

'cut his teeth' in the “Jazz Warriors” of the early 90’s, has gone
on to establish himself as a musician, teacher and composer
of some authority. As well as performing and recording with
Gary Crosby's “NuTroop” and “Jazz Jamaica”, Tony’s playing
has also been a feature of many bands and artists he has
worked/recorded with include “US-3” The World Saxophone Quartet,
Courtney Pine, Donald Byrd, Eddie Henderson, The David
Murray Big Band, Sam Rivers Rivbe Big band, Andrew Hill
Big Band, Abdullah Ibrahim, Macy Gray, Julian Joseph Big

(Music dedicated to Cannonball Adderley) Tony Kofi and the Organisation,
a recent project which he co leads on the Baritone Saxophone, and is also
the co-founder with Jonathan Gee of the Monk Liberation Front, a group
that is dedicated to the music of Thelonious Monk.

1.30pm The Dirty Jazz Club
Dublin band The Dirty Jazz Club have been an integral and underground part of the Irish jazz
scene for over a quarter of a century.  Formed during a time of economic growth in the late
90’s, their name evoked corners of the capital untouched by leather sofas, the jazz brunch
and Irish coffees.  The group’s first gigs were in an anarchist social centre where they
provided an alternative focus for jazz listeners, where extended solos, group communication,
human feeling and textural soundscape could breathe freely, through the music of John
Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and others.

After two and a half decades of performing before the interruption of lockdown, the group
turned to the studio to create an album dedicated to Wayne Shorter.  Each composition
on The Shorter Perspective was arranged and performed with the band’s unique
improvisatory approach in mind.  With 5 dates scheduled for this Summer, the group is now
touring this work with the aim of further exploring the compositions and their own brand of
invention.
“This is where you will find the core jazz principles of communication and interaction, with
musicians comfortable enough to take risks and familiar enough to anticipate each other’s
next move.” Cormac Larkin, The Irish Times.
