Conventional mobile telephone systems had several limitations that led to the development of cellular networks:
1. Limited service capability as they could only support a small number of mobile calls.
2. Poor service performance for calls at the edge of coverage due to weak signals.
3. Inefficient use of frequency spectrum as the entire spectrum was used to service one call at a time. Cellular networks improved on this by dividing cities into smaller cells and reusing frequencies.

INTRODUCTION TO CELLULAR MOBILE SYSTEMS
Limitations of conventional mobile telephone systems:
One of many reasons for developing a cellular mobile telephone system and deploying it in many cities is the operational limitations of conventional mobile telephone systems: limited service capability, poor service performance, and inefficient frequency spectrum utilization
