Victoria was the first Queen of the house
Hanover and the last one of these era. Her reign
was one of the longest in British history, and the
Victorian Age was named after her.
Victoria's links with Europe's royal families
earned her the nickname "the grandmother of
Europe".[227] Of the 42 grandchildren of
Victoria and Albert, 34 survived to adulthood.
Their living descendants include Elizabeth II;
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; Harald V of
Norway; Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden; Margarethe
II of Denmark; and Felipe VI of Spain.
V I C T ORIAN AGE
Her reign became known as "The Victorian
Age" because, it was a long period of peace
and relative prosperity for the British people,
with the profits gained from the expansion
and dominance of the British Empire abroad,
as well as the height and consolidation of the
Industrial Revolution and the emergence of
new inventions. All of this allowed a large and
educated middle class to develop. Despite its
modernization impulses in science, in the
plunge in the individual and in the economic
dynamics, this Era was also marked by rigid
customs, social and sexual moralism,
religious fundamentalism and capitalist
exploitation.
