2.Role as On-Site Engineer

I have been assigned as on site engineer and supervisor at

the aforementioned projects. The first task assigned was to
read and interpret the drawings at the start and understand the
basic terms.

As site engineer, our daily task included site

management, estimating the quantities required of various
materials. This included bar bending schedule and a detailed
report of the material being consumed and available at the
site. Managing, supervising labour and foreman along with
monitoring the work that the work is being carried out as
mentioned in the drawing.

In the underground sump, we also had the opportunity to

understand and how to check the steel work. This included
checking the diameters of steel assigned in the drawing,
numbers and spacing of bars, and check the appropriate
covers as mentioned in the notes of drawing.

5.Supervision Work and On-Site Interaction

The toughest job was to carry out day-to-day

management of the site, including supervising and monitoring
the site labour force. It was necessary to plan the work and
efficiently organize the plant and site facilities to meet agreed
deadlines. Daily logs of materials consumed and stored, daily
records of labours, meeting the requirements of labour and
equipment’s, interacting with the department engineers were
the tasks that were required to be fulfilled.

Due to the internship, I had a chance to interact with

Senior Site Engineers (SSE) and have a grasp of their
knowledge and learn from their expertise. Each day new
observations were pointed out by him to increase the
efficiency of the work and the same helped me to understand

various concepts and cleared my doubts when and where
required.

6.Actual Site Images

As a undergraduate trainee was offered an internship as site

engineer. For this I used to report at the site sharp 10am in the
morning. Their first of all attendance used to be taken. After
this, labours used to start with their work and I was given
charge of handlling daily input of raw materials it's usage on
site, required materials and other minimal works

Conclusion

As an undergraduate, this was an excellent opportunity

for us to get the ground level experience and experience the
things that were learned conceptually. The biggest learning
was to understand and observe the management practices at a
construction site. Each day new problems would arise,
especially while excavations, and since at our construction the
excavation was up to 8 m, daily soil would slide and extensive
measures for dewatering was necessary to ensure work is
carried out smoothly. Working with machines is easy
overtime, but not with people. Interacting with the field
workers and ensuring their safety was the foremost task for
us. It’s a great engineering challenge to ensure that the
drawing is implemented on the site without any hazard.
Various times, things designed cannot be implemented in site
due to numerous reasons, so making necessary amendments,

working with labours, managing daily site requirements,
interacting with the department officers, interpreting
drawings, providing quality assurance and service and
maintaining the organization integrity are all part of the
construction and each of this is needed to be carried out daily,
time and again to ensure the said project is done on the
scheduled time. It has been a great learning experience and
the same has ensured me to face the challenge with shear
confidence.
