QUSTION 1

a) A homeowner consumes 700 kWh in January. Determine the electricity bill for
the month using the following residential rate schedule:

Base monthly charge of RM12.00

First 100 kWh per month at 16 cents/kWh
Next 200 kWh per month at 10 cents/kWh
Over 300 kWh per month at 6 cents/kWh.

Answer
Base monthly charge = RM12
First 100 kWh per month at 16 cents/kWh = RM16
Next 200 kWh per month at 10 cents/kWh = RM 20
Remaining 400 kWh per month at 6 cents/kW = RM 24
Total Charge = RM 72
Average cost = 72 / (100+200+400)
= RM 0.10 / kWh

b) Referring to the residential rate schedule above, calculate the average cost per
kWh if only 350 kWh are consumed in July when the family is on vacation most
of the time.

Base monthly charge of RM12.00

First 100 kWh per month at 16 cents/kWh
Next 200 kWh per month at 10 cents/kWh
Over 300 kWh per month at 6 cents/kWh.
Answer
Base monthly charge = RM12
First 100 kWh per month at 16 cents/kWh = RM16
Next 200 kWh per month at 10 cents/kWh = RM 20
Remaining 50 kWh per month at 6 cents/kW = RM 3
Total Charge = RM 51
Average cost = 51 / (100+200+50)
= RM 0.14 / kWh

QUESTION 2
Calculate the equivalent resistance at terminals a-b for each of the circuits in Fig. 1 (a)
and (b).

Answer

a) Rab = 5//20 + 10//4

= ((5 x 20) ÷ 25 ) + (400 ÷ 50
=4+8
= 12 Ω

b) 60 // 20 // 30 = ( 601  201  301 ) -1

60
= 6
= 10 Ω

Rab = 80 // (10 + 10 )
= (80 + 20) ÷ 100
= 16 Ω
QUESTION 3
Find R in the circuit shown in Fig.2

Answer
20 V = 1 x (10 + R)
1 = 10 + R ÷ 20
20 V = 10 x (10 + R)
R = (10x10) ÷ 20
=5Ω

QUESTION 4
For the network shown in Fig. 3 calculate the values of i1, i2 qnd i3.

Answer
i1 = 1A + 6A
= 7A
6A = i2 + 7A
i2 = 6A - 7A
= - iA

i2 + i3 = 4A
-A + i3 = 4A
i3 = 4A + 1A
i3 = 4A + 1A
i3 = 5A
QUESTION 5
Find v1and v2 in the circuit shown in Fig. 4. Also calculate i1 and i2 and the power
dissipated in the 12Ω and 40Ω resistors

Answer
Given: R1 = 12Ω
R2 = 40Ω
R3 = 6Ω
R4 = 10Ω
Voltage = 15 V

To find: i₁, i₂, V₁, V₂, Power dissipated in 12Ω and 40Ω resistors.
Solution: Resultant resistance of the circuit will be = 12Ω
The total current in the circuit will be V/R = 15/12A = 5/4A
Voltage across R1 and R3 will be same , so i₁×12 = i₃×6
2i₁= i₃

Total current i = i₁+i₃

5/4 = 3i₁

i₁ = 5/12A

Voltage across R2 and R4 will be same, so i₂×40 = i₄×10

4×i₂ = i₄

Total current i = i₂ + i₄

5/4 = i₂ + 4i₂ = 5i₂

i₂ = 1/4 A

Voltage across R1,

V1 = i₁×R1 = 5/12 × 12 = 5 V

V1 = 5V

Voltage across R2,

V2 = I₂× R2 = 1/4×40 = 10 V
V2 = 10V

Power dissipated in 12 Ω = V²/R = 5²/12 Watt

Power dissipated in 12Ω = 25/12 Watt

Power dissipated in 40 Ω = V²/R = 10²/40 = 5/2 Watt

Power dissipated in 40Ω = 5/2 Watt

QUESTION 6

For the circuit in Fig. 5, find the equation for the loop using mesh analysis

Answer

Mesh 1 = 2 ( i1 - i2 ) + 101 - 6 = 0

121 - 212 = 6

Mesh 2 = 4 i2 + 2 ( i2 - i1 ) + 1 ( i2 - i3 ) + 8 = 0

-2 i1 + 7 i2 - i3 = 9

Mesh 3 = 5i3 + 1 (i3 - i2 ) + 6 - 8 = 0

-12 + 6i3 = 2
