wall, and your second friend was assigned
to the curtain. Then the rest of the
decorations is your task. In the following
day, you and your friends brought the
materials for the decoration so that you can
start decorating the room. Now, when you
and your friends showed the materials, you
realized that you forgot to consider that
each of you have different taste or
preference in terms of creativity. One chose
materials for an anime- like concept. The
other one chose an environment something

so on).

Production Concept

“You probably heard the term production

concept, right? Are you familiar with this
term?

Ok, who among you here knows the “ok ma’am”

definition of the term Production concept? I
will give 5 points to those who can answer”.

“Ok, thank you for your answer Ms.____

Now when we say production concept it
is…Kindly read, students”.

A production concept is an idea for how to

produce a certain thing. A production
concept in theater is the way that a
particular artist, or director, or theater
group, plans to perform a production. It is
their interpretation and their choice of show,
and their creativity comes through in the
performance.

“The production concept based from this

text that I’ve shared to you pertains to the
idea, interpretation, and the plans on how is
the production is going to be look like. Ok?”
“none ma’am”
“Ok, to further explain the meaning of the
term, let us see another definition of the
term. Kindly read everyone”.
The production concept is the unifying
creative vision for the design elements of a
stage play. It allows such diverse elements
as costumes, set design, and lighting to
mutually support a creative goal.

“Ok, so similar with my analogy a while ago,

a production concept will allow somebody in
the company with certain obligation in the
production, most especially in the design
element of the play or production to align
their creativity or ideas with the ideas of the
other members of the company”.

“Questions, about the definition of the

production concept? None?

“okay”

“Some may choose to be traditional and

adhere to the original style of a script, while
others may prefer to adapt and alter the
show. It depends on the personality of the
individual in charge, or the nature of the
group involved and their skills”.

You can alter and choose your concept

based on genre or style, a World Theatre
style, a time period, you can make it
stylized and abstract or use a combination
of ideas from different workshops you have
seen or experienced.

There are lots of production concepts of a

certain play that we can see in the internet
or even in your place, there might be
different theatrical production concept of a
certain play.

You might notice that there are plays which

were being produced repeatedly, and you
might find it as a cliche, but when you
actually try to watch the play, you will
realize that although there’s no alteration of
the dialogue or the storyline, but you
probably still recognized that there’s
something new in the play. It is because of
the re-conceptualization of certain elements
of the production.

In building your own concept of a certain

play, you can alter some of the elements of
the production, such as the genre of the
play, the context or the setting of the play,
and so on. But you have to take in to the
account the fact that you have to retain the
essence or the main idea of the play. You
cannot alter all of the elements of the
production, because, if you do so, you will
end up being criticized.

E. Discussing new concepts Now I am going to share an example of a

and practicing new skills play, with various production concepts.
no. 2
“it’s the Greatest
“Ok, who can guess to this picture? “ Showman film, Ma’am”.

“Yes. That’s correct. Ok kindly read

everybody”.

The

Greatest Showman is a 2017 American

biographical musical drama film directed by
Michael Gracey in his directorial debut,
written by Jenny Bicks and Bill Condon and
starring Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle
Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Zendaya.
Featuring nine original songs from Benj
Pasek and Justin Paul, the film is based on
the story and life of P.T. Barnum, a famous
showman and entertainer, and his creation
of the Barnum & Bailey Circus and the lives
of its star attractions.

The movie, “The Greatest Showman” is a

masterpiece of design, music, and picture.
It tells the story of P.T. Barnum, the creator
of The Greatest Show on Earth circus. P.T.
Barnum, played by Hugh Jackman, grows
up in a difficult family, striving for his
misplaced dreams.
The film has quickly become one of the
most successful live-action movie musicals
of all time, and New Centre Stage’s take on
the circus-themed story featured a full line-
up of all its most popular and quirky
characters.
They include the lead role of circus
impresario PT Barnum, memorably played
in the film by Australian actor Hugh “None ma’am”
Jackman.
