Definition
Christianity is an Abrahamic
monotheistic religion based on the
life and teachings of Jesus Christ
Cross
Christians use a cross as a symbol
because Christ was executed on a
cross. This cross is made of gold,
silver and jewels.
Origin
Christianity developed as an
offshoot of Judaism following the
teachings of a man called Jesus. Jesus Christ was born in about 4 BC. ‘Christ’
means Saviour .
Belief
His followers believed he was the Son of God. He stood up for the poor and he
attacked Jewish religious authorities. He promised a future kingdom of God,
where the poor and humble would be rewarded. Christian’s belief that he
came back to life and was taken to Heaven. They expect him to return one
day to rule over the kingdom of God on Earth. That day is known as Parusia,
the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Holidays
Christians celebrate Christmas as the day that Jesus Christ was born. Christmas
is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed
primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration by billions of
people around the world.
Teachings
His powerful teachings worried the Jewish religious authorities and the Roman
rulers and he was executed in about AD 29.
Persecution
More and more people became
Christians even though they were
persecuted in the Roman Empire. In AD
313 the Emperor Constantine made
Christianity the official religion of the
empire.
After some few centuries Christianity
spread all over Europe, governed by a
powerful organization headed by the
Pope in Rome.
