Least Mastered Learning Competency

Investigate the relationship between volume and pressure at

constant temperature of a gas.

Subtasks:

1. Give the qualitative relationship between volume and pressure

at constant temperature.
2. Describe the relationship between the volume and pressure of
confined gas at constant temperature based on a table and
graph.
3. State Boyle’s law.

Have you observed the popping and hissing

sound produced when you open a soft drink
bottle? Can you explain why this happens?

Well, this is Boyle’s Law in action!

Pressure is used before a soft drink bottle
is sealed. When you open the bottle of soda quickly,
the gas rushes from everywhere in the form of foam, causing a mess.
So, what is the cause of this mess? This mess occurs because the soda
is pumped into the soda bottle by passing the water on carbon dioxide.
When you open the bottle, you are actually reducing the pressure on
the gas, and the volume of the gas expands.
If you remove the cap quickly, the gas pushes out of the bottle.
Therefore, you should o pen the cap slowly and carefully until the gas
comes out quietly.

By performing this simple activity, you will be able to find out the
relationship between volume and the pressure of confined g as at a
constant temperature.
Get a 5 mL syringe. Fill it with air by pulling the plunger up. Press
your finger against the end in order to trap the air. Push the plunger in.
What do you feel? Try again, but press harder this time.

Can you feel any difference

between the first pushing Why do you think such
of the plunger and the difference happens? Select
second pushing? from the choices below.

YES or NO

a. The plunger becomes hard to push because of the

change in the volume of the trapped air inside the
syringe. The air molecules become closer as it was
applied with greater pressure. The volume of the
1. _______
trapped air decreases.
b. The plunger becomes hard to push because the air
2. _______
molecules did not change in volume.
c. The plunger became hard to push because the volume
of air inside increased.
