Task 71-22-11-830-002
(2) The aft engine mount is a two-piece Inconel 718 beam assembly
that attaches to the aircraft pylon. There are three link
assemblies that connect the beam assembly to the rear turbine
frame of the engine.
(3) The beam assembly is made of an inner beam and an outer beam
bolted together as a matched part. It has bushings installed in
the attach points for the links.
(4) The three link assemblies are made of two identical parts that
are machined, drilled, and bolted together as a matched set.
The link assemblies have staked bearings installed at each end.
(5) The spherical bearing end of each link is connected to the beam
assembly. The outer end is connected to an attach point on the
rear turbine frame of the engine. Dual-element pins with
retainers are used at all link attach points.
(6) The aft engine mount is attached to the aircraft pylon with
bolts and self-locking nuts.
(7) Two shear pins, installed on the mount beam assembly, are for
alignment of the aft engine mount with the aircraft pylon when
the engine is installed.
B. Operation
(1) The aft engine mount is part of a two point fail-safe system.
It bolts the engine on the aircraft and transmits thrust loads
from the engine to the aircraft pylon structure.
(2) The aft mount prevents engine movement in all directions except
forward and aft. The forward and aft movement ability permits
stress relief during thermal expansion and contraction of the
engine.

A. General
NOTE: For the items shown in Table 401, see the Consumable
Materials Index in the Introduction. Equivalent
alternatives can be used.
CAUTION: DO NOT LET SOLVENT CONTACT THE SEALED BEARINGS. DO NOT USE
COMPRESSED AIR TO DRY THE SEALED BEARINGS. DAMAGE TO THE
SEALED BEARINGS CAN OCCUR.
(1) Fully clean all threaded areas and other metal parts with a
CoMat 02-099 lint-free cloth made moist with CoMat 01-438

CAUTION: DO NOT LET CUTTING TOOL CONTACT THE LINK ASSEMBLY BORE OR
CHAMPFER. DAMAGE TO THE LINK ASSEMBLY CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE ALL OF THE RETENTION LIP IS FULLY REMOVED BEFORE
YOU PUSH OUT THE BEARING. DO NOT USE A HAMMER OR ANY TOOL
WHICH WILL CAUSE SHOCK LOADS TO THE BEARING OR LINK ASSEMBLY.
DAMAGE THE LINK CAN OCCUR.
CAUTION: DO NOT PUSH ON THE BEARING BALL OR USE A HAMMER OR ANY TOOL
WHICH WILL CAUSE SHOCK LOADS TO THE BEARING BALL. DAMAGE TO
THE BEARING BALL CAN OCCUR.
(1) Remove the bearing ball. Use the retention groove cutting tool
to cut a circular groove in the bearing assembly (280) outer
race retention lip. Remove the retention lip ring.
(1) Hold the link assembly (230) and use a bearing removal tool to
push put the bearing (280) race.
(1) Use the CoMat 02-099 lint-free cloth made moist with
CoMat 01-438 solvent. Rub the surface clean before the solvent
dries.
(1) Examine the link assembly (230) bearing hole for small nicks,
scratches, burrs or corrosion. If found, remove with
CoMat 05-129 aluminum oxide abrasive paper.
(1) Use the CoMat 02-099 lint-free cloth made moist with
CoMat 01-438 solvent. Rub the surface clean before the solvent
dries.
(1) Mix the CoMat 07-140 epoxy primer, CoMat 07-139 catalyst and
CoMat 07-144 thinner. Refer to the manufacturer’s
instructions.
I. Apply the primer to the link assembly (230) bearing hole and
bearing (280) race.
(1) Apply the primer mixture to the external surface of the bearing
(280) race and the link assembly (230) bearing hole. Do not put
the primer on the bearing surface. Remove unwanted primer with
a CoMat 02-099 lint-free cloth.
J. Push the bearing (280) into the link assembly (230) bearing hole
(1) While the primer is wet, align the bearing (280) race with the
slots in position to the axis of the link assembly (230)
bearing hole. Use the bearing installation tool to push the
bearing into the link assembly.
(1) Remove the unwanted primer with a CoMat 02-099 lint-free cloth.
(1) Make sure that the bearing (280) outer race lip ring touches
the link assembly (230) chamfer continuously for at least 60%
of the circumference. A 0.005 in. (0,127 mm) maximum clearance
between the lip ring and the link assembly chamfer is permitted
on the remaining 40% of the lip ring circumference, and the
race is set to 0.003 in. (0,076 mm) below to 0.015 in. (0,381
mm) above the link surface.
(1) Make sure the bearing (280) ball moves freely in the bearing
race.
(1) Install the RST2199 roller swaging tool in a drill press and
hold link assembly (230) on the locating fixture. Apply a thin
layer of CoMat 10-073 synthetic grease, moly-disulfide to the
bearing race groove. Set the drill speed at 60 to 150 RPM and
apply clean, dry, oil free compressed air at the lower point of
the rollers.
NOTE: Swage the bearing race with the ball in the race.
(1) Put the roller swaging tool in touch with the bearing (280)
race. Apply gradual pressure as the roller swaging tool turns
until a bearing retention lip ring forms. Make sure the lip
ring touches the link assembly (230) chamfer continuously for
at least 60% of the circumference. A 0.005 in. (0,127 mm)
maximum clearance between the lip ring and the link assembly
chamfer is permitted on the remaining 40% of the lip ring
circumference.
(1) Hold the link assembly (230) and apply an axial proof load on
the swaged side of the bearing (280) race. Proof load to 4950
lbs. (22,018 N). Axial displacement of bearing with respect to
the housing during or after completion of proof testing shall
not exceed 0.003 in. (0,0762 mm). Any deflection greater than
0.003 in. (0,0762 mm) between the bearing outer race and the
housing shall be cause for rejection.
(1) Make sure the bearing (280) ball moves freely in the bearing
race.
(1) Examine the completed repair to make sure this repair procedure
was done satisfactorily.

(1) Use the bushing removal tool to push out the bushing (350 or
360) from the beam assembly (300) lug.
(1) Use a CoMat 02-099 lint-free cloth made moist with CoMat 01-438
solvent to clean the beam assemlby (300) hole. Rub the surface
dry before the solvent dries.
(1) Visually examine the beam bushing hole for small nicks,

CoMat 05-129 aluminum oxide abrasive paper.
(1) Mix the CoMat 07-140 epoxy primer, CoMat 07-139 catalyst and
CoMat 07-144 thinner per the manufacturer’s instructions.
(1) Apply the primer to the beam assembly bushing hole. Remove the
unwanted primer with a CoMat 02-099 lint-free cloth.
(1) Let the primer air dry for a minimum of three hours.
(1) Use a short length of locking wire bent on one end to lower the
bushing (640) into the liquid nitrogen for five minutes.
(1) Remove the bushing (350 or 360) from the liquid nitrogen with
the locking wire and put it on a clean surface. Make sure you
are wearing the correct safety items to pick up the bushing.
Push the bushing into the beam assembly hole until the bushing
flange is flush with the beam assembly lug surface. Let the
installation warm to room temperature.
L. Check the distance between the bushing (360) flanges. See Figure
601
(1) Check that the distance between the bushing (360) flanges is
between 1.464 and 1.467 in. (37,1856 and 37,2618 mm). If
necessary, machine an equal amount of material, up to 0.062 in.
(1,57 mm), from each flange.
Subtask 71-22-11-400-050
